I used an iPhone 4s from 2011 until end of 2018. Probably most remarkably, I never put a case or any kind of screen protector on it. The thing was still practically scratch free when I stopped using it. It’s still sitting in a drawer next to me.

I don't know the history, but there is supposedly a fixed set of Porter Duff blend modes, specific algorithms. For example, this C++ library:

Same. I've written probably more C++ than any other language, and I have a lot of respect for the language overall, but I recently had to use only C for something, and I found it rather refreshing. My use case didn't hit a lot of the pain points of C, but it did feel refreshing as there are fewer ways of doing things, fewer options, compared to C++, and my code ended up feeling more straightforward and readable as a result.
And here I thought you were looking for help understanding how normal vectors work to define the reflectiveness of a 3D surface, and I thought, that’s a rather specific item for guidance!

for me, main thing is turning on the (now native) vim emulation which is decent though missing some things (dot operator please!), and learning the keyboard shortcuts for the various UI panes

That is truly one of the coolest things I've seen in a while.
I remember once telling a friend of mine, after I'd spent several years writing Clojure full-time, that upon getting back into writing C++, the feeling was like "sculpting with electricity." There is a strange sense of power you feel from harnessing the language in a creative way, unlike any other language I've used.
It would seem to me that as long at C++ is the primary language to write for a GPU, it will be a necessary language for new projects for a long time.
I thought “World War II in Color” was a pretty nice series for getting a full understanding of the war across the world.

I watched the Willem Dafoe movie (At Eternity's Gate) about van Gogh recently and there appear to be a few subtle hints at this theory of him as colorblind; a few scenes that show something off with his sense of color, without directly saying anything about it. It was rather interesting, which made me search for more on this topic, which took me to this article.
I at least use a 27" monitor with it fine, so dual-monitor works. But I guess if you need more than that, it might not be a good fit.
My thought is, if you peel back the first layer of music theory, you discover a chaotic, lawless world.
That's because some people think the theory comes first, and the music is based on it. But music is just art, like any other art. The rules are soft and broken and hardly gospel. And music theory is an attempt to have some way to communicate about music using ordinary language. It isn't math, it isn't science, it's just some basic terminology and observations, none of which have much to do with the actual artistic act of making music.
After having my own child, the gravity of stories like this, as well as those in the current news, are as alien to my understanding as reading about the seemingly vicious behavior of, for example, prides of lions and their interactions with their young [0].
I wish for a better human race. We still live in primitive times.

I normally just lurk here on HN but your post hits a lot of empathy from me, so I've logged in finally to share my thoughts.
Businesses come and go and they are not more important than your life. And money is not more important than your life.
First, you should congratulate yourself on taking such an impressive personal risk by moving to a vibrant, different place -- you sound like a very interesting person. Be glad that you are experimenting in life because that's all we really get during our time here -- a chance to try new things. Many people never find the courage to do that, and those who do quickly learn what you have learned, that experiences are unpredictable when you stray from the norm. This is a good thing and it means you are putting yourself out there in the universe to see what is on offer. Now it's time to deal with the next step.
I feel your pain. I know exactly what it is like to feel backed into a corner when the short-term view is a combination of stressful and terrifying.
But it's only the short-term view. When I look back on those moments in my own past, the details are long forgotten, the misery is remembered and I remain glad it is in the past.
Wise man once said: This too, shall pass. And it will. I promise you that. Get through the darkness, there is light on the other side -- guaranteed.
What you need to do is minimize the stress in your life and take responsibilities off your plate -- starting with the business, the work, the overall lifestyle, all of it needs to be reduced or minimized or removed entirely for awhile.
Put yourself in a position where you can do nearly nothing for awhile, except reflect, get some positive interactions with whoever you are close to in your life, whether it is friends or family (or no one, if you are truly comfortable being alone), and don't ask anything of yourself except to take a life pause with no other demands.
During that downtime, give yourself permission to do nothing, to explore your creativity and interests with no pressure to make anything come from them. In the absence of pressure, life has a way of illuminating the real goals.
Japan is always going to be there. You will enjoy it more and perhaps even prosper well if you first learn to relax and enjoy life again without so much pressure.
It's fine if you end up losing a little money to close the business, and maybe even leave Japan for awhile. It can be very stressful to live abroad, and Japan is arguably one of the most challenging because of how different the culture is (assuming you are coming from somewhere in the West).
