Yes absolutely. I spent much of my childhood under dark skies (minimal light pollution).

In the city that I live I miss the sky of my childhood. My wife and I do visit less light polluted areas every year. The sight always takes your breath away. But these areas are becoming harder and harder to come by.

I cannot comment on whether Dantesque awareness of the night sky was common or not, I was, however, quite taken by surprise by Chaucer when and where I least expected it.

I only know of Chaucer because of my history classes in secondary school. I knew of him as the author of Canterbury Tales and of that period in history of the end of middle ages where vernacular literature was rising in stature and becoming accessible.

So finding a manual for an Astrolabe, when I was digging into the mechanics of an Astrolabe myself, written by Chaucer for his son was an unexpected and delightful surprise. Completely blindsided.

It's written in English for his son affectionately refered to little Lewis could follow along without a need to understand sophisticated Latin. He was to young at that time to have mastered Latin.

The manual draws from an 8th-century Latin translation of the Persian-Jewish astronomer.

I came to know later that position of stars occur frequently in the poems in Canterburys Tales, where characters use them to tell time.

If you have the time I highly recommend toying with an Astrolabe. Understanding them is a delight. They were essentially the high end smartphones of their era and id you were rich enough or you had to sail often enough you had one.

It depends entirely on the circumstances.

If someone is doing it because of the arm twisting done by the economy and personal financial circumstances then of course it will not land well. I will feel exploited.

On the other hand if I am coming from a place of joy to be an usher at an odd midnight hour to a more sic recital, where I am paid peanuts or nothing at all, but I get to see the show and participate in the collective enjoyment of wonder it would land very very differently.

If you are happy, in the flushes of love, feeling safe, many things, even ordinary things will feel amusing, funny, worthy of a belly laugh. On the other hand if you are stressed, under pressure, depressed or angry, then not so much.

Often times I am very easily amused by the most prosaic things and I am not even stoned in anything of external chemical source. It feels good to be that way.

For example, I react very differently to Thurber based on my emotional state. Identical external stimulus, very different reaction.

It's a good book on what it is about but Foundations of Data Science it is not.

It is very narrowly focused on the authors' research interest around theoretical results on spectral approximations.

I find their work very interesting but it certainly does not teach you the foundations you need to know to do data science

Far fetchedness is hardly the the standard for wannabe scientific claims. If it was, there are many bridges that people can sell.

Is that so ? I am not knowledgeable myself but some of my family members are (professor s in Sanskrit) and from what I have absorbed from their conversation is in direct contradiction to your claim.

The language of interpersonal communication were vulgarised forms, aka the vernacular languages. Sanskrit was used were a need for formality, respect, speciality was felt.

When the government is absent in its role people/communities do self-organize. As long as local defacto controllers do not resort to things like honor killing, honor rapes like they do in the Haryana belt I am very much for local and distributed control and empowerment.

Regarding stringent anti-littering laws, enforcement has proven nigh impossible exactly where it's required the most. The only discernible difference would be more corruption funded pocket money for the local police. I would be so happy to be proven wrong.

Even with effective anti-littering in place, many places would still need to control the volume of footfalls.

Really saddened by the filth in around Kedarnath. It used to be so pristine before.

As an Indian and an avid traveller I would welcome such a step.

So many places in India have been reduced to a shit show of filth because of not drawing a line.

Many places use an adaptive system of tickets/permits to keep tourist attractions attractive.

Honestly, I quite like Python most of the time. The times when I don't, argghh type errors.

The worst I have had in a while is when I was dealing with a sparse array data type and getting some processing done in a C function to speed things up.

Infuriatingly enough, the index type used to change after initialising the array. It would check if Int32 could accomodate the size of the array. If it could it would downgrade to Int32 at runtime. My C counterpart had no clue.

That was so not fun to debug because the errors were intermittent (depending on the fill factor of the sparse array)

Very interesting. Does LFortran have the same internal array layout as the standard C runtime ?

A shared layout and a shared calling convention would be very nice.

If one wants to add the capability to reason about shape and shape compatibility, Barry Jay's FiSh would be an interesting detour.

This was used in his shape aware language FiSh, for dealing with multidimensional arrays. Shape compatibilities were statically type checked, if I recall correctly. Shapes were also used to optimize the loops.

To add to the confusion, Mathematicians and Physicists often disagree on what that word means. A Physicist's tensor is often a mathematicians tensor field.

An appropriate tensor can certainly be represented by a multidimensional array but not all multidimensional arrays are tensors. It depends on how that multidimensional array participates with others.

For example, (lat, long) is not a 2d vector although it can be represented as a 2 dimensional array.

A tensor is nothing but a flat array of numbers, plus some metadata telling you how to interpret those numbers as a multi-dimensional object.

I wouldn't have liked Axler as my first book of linear algebra but as a second book, it worked, it gave me a more algebraic appreciation which is a bit against my natural grain of vector space and geometric way of thinking.

I quite liked Linear Algebra Done Wrong. My first linear algebra book was Noble's.
