Forgot to add, after you uncomment the subpixel stuff, just do a `make && sudo make install && make clean` from the `xenocara/lib/freetype` directory.

Also, repeat the same after each snapshot upgrade, as the X sets will overwrite it every time, naturally. Don't forget to keep it updated as well, with `cvs up`.

Also, there are some nice fanless Mini-ITX boards out there with dual gigabit, which is all you need (plus a case for a board and a switch, of course).

M350 enclosure is popular and cheap.

It goes without saying such box will smoke anything you can buy of-the-shelf. Hell, even the anemic ALIX Geode gave a nice boost to my home network over the crappy Linksys I had previously (things are now snappy and 100% stable).

Soekris now has new models with Intel Atoms, top quality stuff as always (old ones are rock solid too, if a bit dated). I went with ALIX instead as I had a local distributor so it was quite a bit cheaper. Plenty fast for now, too.

Glad to hear you like the idea. It was an eureka moment for me :)

Automation is great. However, it takes a lot of code to do it right. A lot of code brings complexity, edge cases and bugs.

I decided to follow KISS principle and provide managed personal service where I can remember people by name.

The service has nothing to do with being a CDN. It is a place where you can host your static sites, set them up and basically forget about them.

Minimal base system, OpenBSD, PF and nginx are there to keep things simple, network invisible and noise free.

Basically a niche service for technical folks and people who like things simple, minimal and stable.

I even started sending personal mail via Postmark SMTP to further decentralize. Having no minimum and using a concept of pre-paid credits is genius. Since I send very small amounts of mail, even the free quota will last me a loong time. I feel like I am abusing/taking advantage of the service in this way :)

Sometimes we don't realize things. I was using Vim before. I loved it, tweaking it all the time, thinking it helped me to achieve various things faster etc.

When I switched to nvi I realized how wrong I was. My .nexrc contains less than ten lines. There is no syntax highlighting. I was also forced to learn real vi properly. When you do such things amazing things happen.

My point was, time better spent is coding, not dicking around (and relying) on .vimrc.

We often forgot about the essence of things such as typing the actual code or words, and focus on tools. Better investment is learning how to properly type than having countless little helpers which are nothing more than debt.

Increasing complexity in all areas of life really is troublesome.

I could’ve gone explaining myself for hours, but I like short and to the point writing. It was just an idea to build a Mac centric site, covering more technical things, as Gruber obviously swayed in another direction.

As you may know, thinking of a name and registering a domain is not easy today, so I went with the simplest path, a play on well know brand.

Email is email.

Facebook email, at least how it was marketed (Gmail killer etc) is a joke. People expected a serious, streamlined service and they got girlie private messaging.

Gruber is an excellent writer, no denying. I am not even going there. English is not my native language.

My idea was 'Back to Mac' version of Daring Fireball.

Safari is most polished of them all. I am not even considering non native apps (Firefox, Opera). While Chrome is good, it has various little interface, implementation and behavior oddities.

As for the second part, I am all for Crux, Slackware, JFS, OpenBSD, cwm, evilwm, ratpoison, urxvt etc. I am also tired. And MacBook Air gives me little friction.

I’ll consider it, but sites are meant for visiting and reading. I am old school like that.
