Just buy a Realm subscription from Mojang.

I ran a private server for my kids for a while and it was a huge headache. Bedrock is purposely made to not make it easy to DIY. It was difficult for their friends to join, everyone was mad when it was down when they wanted to play, and I had to take great care to not lose their progress.

Paying for a Realm doesn't scratch that DIY itch, but your kids will actually get to enjoy playing, which is really the point, isn't it?

Alternately, run a Java server and use the Java-to-Bedrock plugin / proxy / adapter.

Not to diminish the comment, but most things are not as complex as they sound when phrased in everyday language or sound much more complex than they are when phrased in technical language.

Technical language is a tool that allows insiders to say less and refer to more, and to be specific, but it's just a tool. Most things can be described in accessible ways.

I think you'd be surprised at what you could understand and at just how few domains are truly complex enough that a layman couldn't understand with a little bit of patience and an accessible summary.

In another decade I expect the processes and procedures will catch up.

We're at that awkward time where there is still an expectation to fill out JIRA tickets, but it is possible to ship multiple features at once in less time than the planning meeting takes.

As the models improve, the slop will reduce. As the humans improve, the processes and procedures will change to match the new paradigm, whatever it becomes.

I can relate, but it's our turn of the wheel it seems.

It's a phenomenon that's happened basically nonstop since the Enlightenment. Yeaterday it was John Henry, today it's you.

Time to find a new hobby to bring intellectual satisfaction if typing "do my job" over and over in a text box isn't doing it.

I don't think it's a given that this can't be partly or mostly policed by parents if they were provided good tools to do so.

As it is all of the parental controls on all devices, apps, and services are extremely lackluster.

So I'd argue legally required, granular, parental controls and empowering parents would be a much better start to resolving this issue compared to blatant government privacy overreach.

Because it's pretty likely some of these have negative long term effects. And some of those long-term effects are probably pretty serious.

Many people taking these kind of drugs are gambling with their well being. No doubt that in many cases that gamble is worth it.

But issues that can be solved with non-pharmaceutical solutions, such as with weight loss and lifestyle changes, are really better solved that way if possible. There's no risk of longterm effects and it helps foster a larger culture of healthy living in society generally, reducing the lilihood of the problem in the general population.

I think people will come around to accepting llm written code eventually, but it's hard having your entire career, and identity, upended overnight.

Many people, myself included, have come to define themselves by their coding skills. They've taken great pride in not just solving the problem, but solving it in an elegant or nice looking way. Crisp comments, nice spacing, clever abstractions.

In an age where an llm is better at scanning the code than you are, these things just do not matter anymore. Llms will be doing the debugging. Llms will be doing the writing. Llms will be doing the optimizing. And so all that matters is that llms can make sense of things. And they are much much better at making sense of things without the need for so many of the things that humans rely on as waypoints.

The skill is no longer writing the code. It's solving the problems. Maybe it always was.

Everyone is afraid about what will happen when people's skills atrophy, but the tools aren't going anywhere.

If they truly can always recognize problems and communicate them in understandable ways, then people's skills won't atrophy.

Everyone's skills will be enhanced.

New developers will learn all of the things they need to learn through using the tool.

A thought I have been tossing around in my head as the models get better is that it really may not matter what the code looks like.

If the observed behavior of the software is good, then the software is good. If a bug, of whatever kind, can be fixed by a model on a vibe-coded codebase, then that's a fixable bug. If there are no exploitable vulnerabilities, then the code is secure. If the performance is adequate, then the code is performant.

It simply does not matter what the code looks like if, from the outside, it does what its supposed to, and, from the inside, a model can fix the issue if one is found.

More than ever, software engineering is now really a job about making sure the code is doing what its supposed to.

And even if it DOES matter what the code looks like, you can have a model fix that too.

My personal opinion for the reasons for this:

- Less families with kids the same age in suburban neighborhoods

- Less community between neighbors

- More on demand entertainment inside the house

Basically it's more that there is less to do outside and more to do inside. Parents just want their kids to busy themselves, and inside is easier than outside now.
