Quick search on duck duck go for an historical exchange rate calculator this was one of the top choices. First I thought the numbers were a bit off, then I noticed that every time I click the "Get historical rates" button the numbers are different. Think our jobs are safe for now guys.

I’d be really curious to read a write-up on the technical details of integrating their sync engine with the two different mobile platforms. For someone following the local first landscape Linear is the poster child of a great app that leverages its benefits so understanding how it fits together when going native on mobile would be a compelling read.

Local first is the first software trend in a long time that has gotten me really excited. The aspect of co-located data and logic is what's most interesting for me for two reasons:

1. Easier to develop - Sync layer handles all the tricky stuff, no need for translation layer between server and client.

2. Better user experience - Immediate UI feedback, no network dependency etc.

I suspect there will be a major tide shift within the next year or two when a local first framework with the developer experience similar to Nuxt or Next comes about. The Rails of local first.

Do you think there will be a market for typical household electronics items such as the hairdryer specifically made with repairability in the near future? Perhaps driven (unlikely) by consumer demand or more likely by resource prices or legislative pressure.

Schwitters legacy lives on. When I was studying at the Royal College of Art I was part of the Mertziety which made yearly excursions out to the Mertz barn[1] which is where Kurt took shelter in the UK during the Second World War. It’s in a beautiful location located in Elterwater in the Lake District UK. Ian and Celia who take care of the place are very keen to share their stories to anybody who’s visiting and it’s well worth a visit for anybody who’s in the area.

This is an excellent tool, would be good to have some simple rounding functionality. Perhaps a generic visible decimal points settings or a round() method of some sort.

After reading this my mind went to the same place of viewing the clipboard as a stack. Wonder if that’s possible system-wide.

One solution I have in vim which I always forget to use is adding an additional d or p to use a secondary paste buffer:

I'm a heavy vim user but I think Notion is better suited for organising ideas and general life admin. While I'm sure it's possible to set up vim to act similar (vimwiki looks interesting) it wouldn't enable easy and nice viewing, editing and syncing across mobile devices. It's very keyboard-centric on desktop but manages to translate the interface rather elegantly to touch devices.

I heard this story which I’m not sure is true but could very well be. Apparently two guys claimed to be Daft Punk in Ibiza and racked up massive bills everywhere before splitting. Needless to say that didn’t make them very popular there before everybody figured out what had happened.

Copy paste across all my apple devices is perhaps the most underrated killer feature of the apple ecosystem. I just wish there was a way to extend that to my Linux desktop.

I’ve had one of these for over a year now and couldn’t recommend it more dearly. Excellent build quality, powerful and intuitive customization software and just generally a nice atmosphere around the company.

I can’t speak for the states but I feel strongly that the aggressive conformists are gaining ground on several levels of society. One can avoid the worst of it if as you say one stays away from certain threads online and I’ve personally taken steps to do so but the way it has started to permeate broader academia and work places is creating a real problem which needs to be addressed and the fact that sensible people are speaking out about it now is encouraging.

What I find most interesting is how this might transform inner cities. If central space is cheaper more space will be available to artists and other cultural activities while also making room for early stage startups which could give rise to a renewal of a vibrant inner city atmosphere in places where this has been on the decline due to high rental prices.

I was going to cite that exact first quote because it reflects my recent experience on Twitter. Yesterday I deactivated my account. Did I have a large following? I think I had 1 follower, I used it to follow mostly artists and programmers.

So why did I deactivate my account? A couple of weeks ago I started following the debate around free speech because classical liberal values are close to my heart and it was like walking in on a car crash happening in slow motion. I just couldn’t take my eyes of it.

In an attempt to regain my sanity and creative thinking I’m going back to reading books and having private conversations with people, preferably in-person.

Edit: HN discussions it should be mentioned are still a bastion of thoughtful conversation which I would like to maintain. In respect to that please don’t make this thread political, my reference to liberal values was only to give an example of a topic largely infected with a negative discussion climate. Original article was more about the dynamics of conversation, not the topics themselves.

Great work. UI tip: When reading on mobile browser and rotating the phone the text doesn’t expand to occupy more space like it can. I find myself doing this a lot to read code on my phone so when a site doesn’t adapt to allow me to read it without odd line breaks I usually leave the site.

Pretty impressive. I could see myself using this quite often.

Wonder if it has already scraped all the man pages for the various bash tools or if doing so would improve it even more.

Really cool. I recently began playing around with procedural 3D design and found Sorcar[0] which gives Blender Houdini like capabilities.

A good place to start for anybody interested in exploring this sort of thing.

Looks cool for really simple things but wouldn't use it for anything serious. I have been using Cypress[0] the past few months and so far I've been quite pleased with it.

Would be interesting to see these fed into a generative adversarial network (GAN) to create illustrations of new species.

The most requested feature, to allow a file or folder to be ignored by Dropbox sync without using selective sync is finally in beta.

The community requested a .dropboxignore file but they chose another solution which I’m sure is reasonable for making the feature more user friendly to non-devs.

This will be immensely helpful for node_modules or build target directories.

If you're on an X11 based desktop system I would highly recommend Quicktile[1]. I have a 43 inch 4k too and the 3x1 layout is one of the most common I use. Centering a single window in the middle is also very useful. On my mac I use Spectactle[2] instead and I have the keyboard shortcuts mapped the same on both systems. If I would use Windows this looks like a good option.

I find the morning to work best for me but my girlfriend does it before she goes to bed. If I would add another session each day that would be it to help me sleep better.

I sit on a chair and try to keep good posture so falling asleep has never been anything I’ve worries about.

For me those two changes weren’t directly related but I believe meditation can be very helpful in strengthening willpower and regaining focus on long term goals which is very helpful in the pursuit modifying patterns of behavior. For me it certainly works that way.

I was “lucky” in the sense that cannabis began having very negative effects on my mind so quitting was fairly easy. I know from other friends it’s not always like that so I wish you all the luck in your attempts to quit or cut down on your consumption.
