They’re likely referring to a remote access trojan (malware) which likely shares many features of whatever administrative tool the IT team uses at that company.
They’re also in my neighborhood - I generally see one every time I do an errand. They tend to drive 5-10 mph under the rest of traffic which can be frustrating. They also tend to be slow when making lane changes and turns to the point where it holds up other vehicles.
On a similar note, I setup my utility account this week. It was suggested by the representative that I use the last 4 digits of my SSN as a pin for my account. Pretty disappointing how short sighted many companies are when it comes to security practices.
Have you considered a ms surface for accessing your main machine? I’ve been tempted to use one running a linux disto for pretty much your use case, but haven’t pulled the trigger quite yet

Ill be buying a new car this summer and seriously considering doing this or other hardware mods to disable any modems/telemetry. Does anyone know of any forums or something similar dedicated to these types of car hardware mods?
I’ve purchased a book from Kobo before. It used the epub DRM compatible with adobe digital editions. At the time (afaik) they didn’t have a way to load it on a kindle without breaking the drm, converting it to mobi and doing a manual transfer. These days I stick with my public library (which uses overdrive and in my opinion is fantastic) or amazon in the event they don’t own ebook licenses.
It’s always nice starting from a fresh install. But if you’re worried about things breaking during a 30-34 upgrade, i’d suggest doing a backup of your system and trying it out. I’ve been extremely impressed with how flawlessly fedora pulls off dist upgrades in the past.
It seems to me like it’s in the best interest of the community to have an understanding of what steps were asked to be taken in the event contributions are made by those parties in the future. I feel it is important for regaining trust, overall project transparency and for setting a certain degree of precedent.
I’ve done qualification on hpe and various competing vendors and honestly haven’t seen dramatic differences in terms of performance and failure rates. From my experience the biggest difference was with vendor support services rather than the actual hardware. I’d be curious to hear more about your qualification experience with this particular vendor if you’d be willing.
I’ve worked on infrastructure (design) engineering teams at a very large company that still does their own datacenters. I can confirm that spinners are still very much in use and are not used for archival purposes - that’s what tapes are designed and used for.
What’s your alternative method to reach a mass audience?

My current work around for my main linux laptop is setting rclone to run with crontab at a time that I know i’ll be online for an extended period (evenings during long homework sessions). I’ve been doing this for several years and have yet to run into major show stopping bugs, and I frequently do checksum verification on my backups.

On modern hardware running fedora 30/31/32 i’ve yet to have any serious tearing issues like you describe. Either way if you’re not willing to tweak a few settings then mac would be your best bet.
I’ve been using Fedora for over a year with KDE. Before that it was Kubuntu for a year. The difference is night and day in my opinion. I believe this is due to the constant updates on fedora that fixed many annoying bugs I had with the ubuntu install. The downside is that you are likely to get a kernel update about once a week, it honestly hasn’t been an issue and i’m a college student who needs essentially 100% uptime on my boxes. But in my opinion it’s the perfect trade off since it’s not quite rolling but still on the cutting edge for the most part.
Originally I had terrible battery performance like what you are describing. I have a dell xps 15 9560 with a 97Wh battery. With bumblebee installed with proprietary nvidia gpu drivers I can get all day battery life no problem (easily 10+ hours of active usage). The same cannot be said for when its booted into the windows partition. Yes this is because of the gpu settings but why would windows need to utilize it with everyday tasks like google docs or casually browsing the web? It took some work to get the battery under control but after I did some reading about drivers and bumblebee I didn't have any problems. Been on this install for a bit over a year now without any show stopping issues.
In the start menu. It could be that there are different definitions of ads. But on my windows system I get ads for games and other applications that they want me to install. I think they even install some of them like candy crush without asking me first (I disabled this in registry). Figured companies pay microsoft to promote their apps.
I meant no disrespect, I'm/was curious to know about your experience with windows. Personally I use linux distros 95% of the time and notice a significant increase in battery life and decrease in ram/cpu utilization compared to when using windows on the same system. ~8Gb (or more) vs 2.4Gb for the ram and 80% cpu utilization vs 10-15%. I'm curious how much of that difference is the background processes installing candy crush etc. But good on you if your system meets your use case and what not.

Have you used windows 10 recently? I didn't realize how bad it was until I installed a fresh copy of windows 10. My backup windows machine has so many registry patches to disable the crapware that I didn't recall how bad it truly is by default.
