Not the OP, but I alternate between self-hosted instances of Outline (https://www.getoutline.com/) and Nextcloud (with Collabora) for this. Outline I actually like better than Google Docs for most things. Nextcloud is a little rough, but it has change tracking, which I need sometimes.

I’ve also seen a lot of people using Cryptpad recently, which I think wraps OnlyOffice.

That’s how I used Instagram in the first half of the 2010s. It seemed like the app was designed for that use case back then. Now it seems like it’s designed primarily for watching ads, so I text my friends instead.

I don't think this is true anymore. The average user may not know what end-to-end encryption is, but they know they don't trust Facebook. And Apple built a whole marketing campaign around user privacy.

I think most people do care about privacy, but they're usually powerless to defend it.

Also, that massively centralizes the Internet in a way that's not great. If one of those CDNs gets hacked or just goes down for an hour, it breaks every website that uses it.

I think that they can do that is the problem, though? If you don’t like the way Google is running things, you can swap out the OS on your Pixel for one of several open source privacy-focused Android forks. But if Apple does something to iOS you don’t like, you’re stuck with it.

Yes. We live in a world where our only real freedom is our purchasing decisions. I think that leads to people making brands, TV shows, video games, etc. a big enough part of their identity that criticism of that thing feels like criticism of them personally.

My bet is they wait a few months and quietly announce that they’ll do the scanning on the iCloud servers instead. That would be relatively uncontroversial in the tech press and probably never make it to the mainstream press.

If the million customers they lose also happen to be people who build apps and influence the tech buying decisions of everyone they know, that could be a very big problem over time.

Likewise. I'm running Pop!_OS on mine. When I pre-ordered, I figured there was a 50/50 chance the thing would even ship. But it shipped exactly when they said it would, and it's fantastic. I'm very impressed with Framework so far.

I just switched to a Framework from a 2018 MacBook Pro. My take: the display is comparable, the keyboard is much better, and the trackpad is fine, but not as good as Apple's.

It’s so tragic. We all have these supercomputers in our pocket and we’re not allowed to really use them. Imagine what kids would make if they could code apps on device and Airdrop them to their friends.

This article ignores the human rights aspect. We need to be able to install software independent of the App Store to work around government censorship. As is, if my government asks Apple to take down VPN apps, they will do it, and I’m left with no way to access information on the open web.

I think what the author is arguing for is allowing iOS users to install software without Apple’s permission.

It's not so much "unable" as "deeply invested in exacerbating the problem".

I would argue that removing the App Store as a single point of failure for free speech [1][2] would be a pretty big benefit.
