Musk was always going to do this. It's amazing how many times Musk lies and people just keep believing anything he says. It's not surprising that Musk likes Trump. Both are pathological liars.

I deleted twitter around the time Elon's bid got approved. I was thinking about it for a while, as the app is just another way to get pissed off at the world.

These moves seem odd given that Elon isn't even the owner yet and still has some ways to go to get it all done.

I am getting the feeling twitter will be dead in a couple of years. End up like Tumblr or something. It will still be there, but it will have lost it's place in the top 20 social media platforms.

I don't have much to add to this, but Facebook couldn't go away faster for me. My account is still active, but I deleted the app on the phone and probably only check my home page once every two weeks.

My friends and family just aren't that interesting when they post stuff or it's awful content. I find myself sharing everything with people I want to interact with over text.

Zuck is a sociopathic asshole, so I hope Facebook fails miserably.

I am glad she was found guilty, but there are a few concerns. First, she was only convicted of lying to her investors, not the actual patients, which is laughable.

Second, she is supposed to get up to 20 years for EACH of the counts (they will be served concurrently so she won't get 80 years). And I am curious as to how much time she will actually serve.

Third, what kind of sociopath has a baby in the middle of a trial where she could go to jail and not see the kid for years???

We kicked out a bunch of traitors from Congress during the Civil War era, so banning a person from twitter who is actively trying to foster a Civil War by promoting lies and misinformation seems pretty mild.

Banning her or anyone like her who spreads lies is perfectly within Twitter's terms of service. The issues is doing it consistently.

I can't tell you how many times I have reported lies about elections and Covid on twitter and almost always it's "We found nothing wrong with this".

There is a lot going on with this guy. He says a lot of the "right" things and it's pretty clear he has a point with our system being really messed up. The problem with founding a new party is that it has to have a base that is based on something organic and I don't think this guy realizes that.

At best, he can only hope for a party base derived from his personality, which is lacking. Other than that, I don't see any demographic group that he can consider his core group of supporters.

At the very least, it will make people think about the current system and how to change it.

I know people here are (rightly) worried about censorship by Facebook and other social media companies.

The problem is that Trump and other fascists, don't give a shit about being fair or moderate or playing by the rules. Trump and his supporters care about power and control. They will use and abuse the rules in their favor to get as much power as possible.

This is why I stopped using them last summer. They messed up a few of my trades. Either by giving me a worse price than was quoted or my reversing the trade after it had already gone through.

After it happened a second time in a short time frame, I knew something was up. I closed all my trades and took all my money out.

What's really weird is that these "errors" started happening only after I started making good trades. When I lost money on a trade (which happened a lot for the first few years of casual trading), I NEVER had an execution error. Then, when I had my first good run of trading in years, all of the sudden I had TWO trades messed up within a week of each other???

It was all too conincidental for me. Either they were messing up my trades because of incompetence or they were letting someone take the other end of my trades.

Whichever it was, I left.

Robinhood had an insane run of good press and was able to within years of crap product. Now they are finally getting what's coming to them.

Coal pollutes both in destruction of the physical land (strip mining) and in ongoing pollution from huge amounts of carbon emissions.

Solar needs to be a responsible in how they get the materials (mining) and dispose of broken or outdated panels.

You ignored my main point, which is that coal is also subsidized because we don't accurately price in all the pollution.

Solar would have been explored much sooner if we factored in the pollution.

The problem with this idea that we subsidized solar until it was profitable is not accurate.

Solar power doesn't pollute and I would argue that all other forms of power that do pollute aren't taxed nearly enough for it, with coal being the most obvious example.

Coal power sends an insane amount of carbon into the atmosphere. If we properly carbon-taxed coal, it would go out of business tomorrow. And that doesn't even get into the environmental destruction that comes from strip mining.

Strip mining is when coal companies buy a whole fucking mountain and then destroy it piece by piece to remove the coal. How the fuck is that not good for the environment and our society after the coal is gone?

So, solar power really is a lot of cheaper than coal when you consider all the negative externalities that it brings.

No, I wouldn't know. I haven't worked for a company in a long time, big or small. I would imagine there are similar problems at start-ups, but the smaller scale would at least give you the chance at a fair shake.

The big tech giants have used this marketing ploy that "older workers don't understand new tech" to undercut them at almost every opportunity.

I honestly have no idea why they are allowed to get away with this in the media and public opinion. Maybe because older people don't know new tech, so they think older programmers don't know it either?

It's insane to me that an older programmer with decades of experience and multiple language fluency is somehow "worse" than a 25 year old who has been programming professionally for a few years at best and probably knows fewer languages.

Tech companies think they can get away with it because they do exactly what IBM did, fire all the old hats, then hire back the ones they really do need at cheaper, contractor rates.

It's pretty revolting to me.

Sure there are old people at these large tech companies just collecting a paycheck and really aren't better than the younger guys, but it's clearly not to the extent that IBM would make you think.

LinkedIn is one of those things you have and probably only use when you need a job or are desperate for clients.

No one is there to get decent information or to genuinely connect with people. It's the digital equivalent of the super fake networking seminars people go to. Everyone is a seller and on one is a buyer.

Literally the exact same thing happened when people were allowed to day trade with better internet around 1998-2002. Everyone started day trading, especially during the tech bubble right up to 9/11.

About 90% of retail traders lose money, so buyer beware. It's hard to trade and beat the market.

I studied abroad because I REALLY wanted to. I was immensely looking forward to traveling, experiencing new customs, learning new ways of thinking and even learning more than the basics of the language.

It was an experience I will value forever.

I think a big difference is that when Americans or Europeans study abroad, they are looking for an experience, when Chinese students (if this guy is to be believed) are looking to pad their resumes.

Same goes for college. If you go to college so you can put it on your resume, then you will hate it. If you go to college looking to learn, make friends and acquire skills, then it will be fantastic.

I mean, social media should be more regulated and laws should definitely be enacted to hold those companies more liable for the content that is published on their platforms. The problem is that I definitely do not want Trump deciding on how to do it.

I think that attitude of customers is changing as we speak. Before, sure, it was easy to ignore the ramblings of how the CCP was upset at something and a western company just gives into them.

Now, anti-CCP sentiment is growing. I think western people are starting to realize how different we actually are. The CCP will be blamed for the pandemic (which is mostly correct), and you will see a massive decoupling here in the next couple of years.

This is the first real anti-globalization movement in about 80 years. Who knows where it will end.

This is a good way to look at it. These investors are supposed to be the smart ones allocating capital to good business ideas. It's insane to me that anyone ever invested any money in WeWork.

And I agree with Uber, it's a great idea, but they subsidized their rates to gain market share. Too bad they don't have a plan for how to actually increase their rates to a sustainable level without losing that market share.

I think Uber failed in realizing that it's not that hard to create a clone of them.
