I was talking to someone recently and they were wanting a way to find more businesses that provide flat quotes instead of hourly rates for predictable services. For example, if a lawyer reviews a lot of employment contracts they could probably provide a fixed price instead of an hourly rate for this type of work. It isn't always easy to find these types of businesses though.
I decided to create a simple proof of concept site where people can go post your businesses with contact information and list what type of services you provide. Then other small businesses can search and hire you for those services.
This is a pretty barebones implementation just to see if there is enough interest to make it better. There's no cost to use it, just trying to provide something useful right now.

I posted my project[0] to try and help people find jobs where they would be happier writing software, just a few days ago and didn't get much traffic or any comments. I guess that means it wasn't a great idea or I'm really bad at marketing.
This would be nice, but thinking about the interview process as it currently stands, I'm not sure if it would end up being that helpful. As an industry we're really pretty terrible at interviewing and identifying talent so maybe not getting any feedback is just as useful.
If anyone saw the link to codehappy.info that was posted a few months back, this is the evolution of that site. It's still very much a work in progress, but I wanted to get this out early to see if there is even any interest in a site like this. It obviously could use some design work, and I literally just launched so there aren't even any job listings yet. However, if anybody wants to comment I'd really appreciate hearing what you have to say.

Yeah, it's not that much extra work so it seems like something that should just always be done. Plus once you start messing around with any kind of authentication it seems irresponsible not to support it.

Currently there is not. Most of the companies only have 1 or 2 responses right now, so a counter didn't seem all that useful. I'll look into adding it though.

http://codehappy.info - awesome because it's trying to help people find information about a company that you can't easily get anywhere else so they can code happy.
This is a site I've wanted at various times, but could never find anyting like it. Since I had a little free time I decided to put something together and see if anyone else thinks it is a useful idea. The idea is kind of like GlassDoor but stricly for software attributes. I think most programmers have certain attributes they want in a job (maybe they only want to work with git, or they only want to work some place that practices TDD, etc), but it's not always easy to know what the company programming philosophy is. If you don't know any employees you'd have to go through the interview process and try to decipher what the place is really like. It'd be better if we could get a pretty good idea before wasting time in an interview for a place we don't want to work.
The way it works is you fill out a survey for the place you work (we start with questions from the Joel Test and then we've added some more that we could think of). You can search for a company and see all the results that have been submitted (for example http://codehappy.info/report?company=MomCorp). All the data is anonymous and we only require a github login to prevent spamming. We chose a github account since we figured it was something many developers would already have, but this is something else we'd like feedback on. We don't want to rank companies as many questions don't have a correct answer, we just want to make the information easier to find.
The site is pretty crude as it is now as this is a true MVP since I'm not sure if enough other people want something like this. We just launched it so there isn't really any data to search yet and so I need to see if people will fill out the survey. I'd really like some feedback especially on the questions asked in the survey and/or ideas for more questions. If this catches on I have some ideas for improvements and an advanced search option. Let me know what you think!
Yeah, I've seen the wiki thing quite a bit and think it's a good thing. I guess part of the reason why the conference idea intrigued me is that it's not easy to actually get people to go read those pages when they're just links sent out in an email. I've actually tracked some of the links I've sent out and a 10% click rate was pretty common. There could be a lot of different reasons for that so I can't necessarily draw any specific conclusions. However, if you took a day and told people you have to go to one of these presentations maybe they'd actually pick something up.
