It's problematic. Over time, companies that abuse opt-outs and consent preferences likely will need to be punished via a combination of regulatory fines, the marketplace taking business from them, and media shaming. We're deploying tools and technology to help audit and hold accountable such entities but I expect it's a long road ahead. (co-founder of DeleteMe here)

Because that's not Google's business. At least this is a step in the right direction. That IS the business of privacy removal services like DeleteMe which i am a cofounder of. Like in many things in life the advice "follow the $" can be helpful here ;)

Indeed it's complex to do the submission but I understand why Google needs some of the details to process with fidelity and consideration. Sadly, simple privacy is now complex to achieve. We have to start unraveling 25 years of unfettered data collection somewhere. Google here is no worse than the data brokers red tape processes and corporations hiding behind consent managers with ID verification etc.

i'm guessing pretty much only CA enforces it and generally to make $ the way police do from ticketing.

credit cards are the market solution here. they work. virtual cards are even better. more effective and efficient legislation would be to simply enforce processors to accept and not differentiate virtual mastercard / visa / amex cards!

disclaimer: i'm a co-founder. https://joindeleteme.com/ we consistently find in our DeleteMe searches fairly "rich" profile info sold by data brokers and SEO'd on Google not just on our customers themselves but also their family. This often includes: spouse full name and age (and obviously relationship) and, more disturbingly, children's names and ages. We try to remove all this via opt-outs. The implications of such full family profile data being easily available by simple Google searches and for sale "cheap" at data brokers are not imhop awesome. Lastly, leaving privacy aside, from a security perspective, do NOT use children/family members names and years of births in ANY passwords.

passwords ain't broken but the thinking here is at HN :( passwords are going to be around for a good long time as i suspect WebAuthn and others will discover. the author is correct that hackers are smarter than companies and developers about human psychology, which, like, matters. databases want identity data and a simple 2FA on top of passwords is winning because marketing can get your phone # too. and on and on...
