Yes, Kyiv, Ukraine (lived there for family reasons). Air strikes are very common, mostly during night. I live and work in 11th floor (self employed, mostly full remote), which is not a good choice, as it's the drone flight level height. Life and business is somehow "normal". There are not really shelters, and even in my quite central district it's 25min by foot to the nearest metro station. Kyiv is very very large. Most "shelters" are just rooms here and there, which is quite useless most of the time as we have the "2-walls minimum" rule to protect against harm but it's physically nonsense too. It's dangerous to use the elevator during attacks (power outage + potential fire / system breakdown), and the staircases are OUTSIDE of the house, so it's always a spicy task to go down to the building's basement to sleep on the (stone) floor, usually on a yoga mat, with some food and my macbook ;)

High rise office buildings, high rise apartment buildings, 5million people waiting for the bus, buying at McDonalds, sitting in coworking spaces, it's exactly like in Paris or London, just with rockets and drone swarms crushing into this densely populated city. The supermarkets have most stuff, the subway works, water, electricty and heating works surprisingsly well, but that's because Kyiv is well defended against airstrikes now, a privilege most eastern cities dont have.

Landline internet and mobile signal has outages (due to russian attacks) but works in general much better than in my origin country Germany. Contactless payment and wifi is very common and works very well in urban areas, even during attacks. All ukrainian ISPs have an agreement now that they try to keep the system up and open for everybody, regardless of your provider.

Lots of native ukrainians are so "done" with it that they jsut sleep through the night / attacks, not giving a f* anymore. Also masses of children everywhere. Working from cafes is wild too, as lots of school children usually stay there during the raids. Lots of laptop workers 60+ too, surprisingly (it's more a younger people thing in my german culture).

Tricks: Don't hope, don't pray, just be well prepared, and hardcore realistic. Have a stack of everything, fill everything you have with clean water, have energy for days and keep your devices loaded. Have a stash of warm clothes, multiple shoes, wet toilet paper, food that doesnt need a fridge or fire and all that "survival" stuff. Assume the worst case, and prepare for this. Dont take risks, it's a warzone, even simple things like losing your keys can be a desaster. Have a backout plan (car) in case things go very bad. Connect with everybody, we are all in this together. Dont tell customers / clients you are in Ukraine, it will just complicate things. Have a laptop of course, to be able to work from everywhere, as you might leave you apartment often due to air raids. Have a one-click hotspot on your phone to work with the laptop.

How close is the war? You can hear explosions all the time, it's a wild mix of air defense working, air defense hitting incoming stuff, or missiles / drones hitting. In 2 occasions, apartment blocks in the 500m radius were hit heavily, one time i was even filming it (sent clip to BBC, they never published afaik). Didnt see any dead people, but lots of smoke. At night i saw a wild thing, a swarm of drones flying into electric wires or so. Sirens all the time. One time a hypersonic missile was shot down or hit something over/in my disctrict, was the loudest thing i ever heard, so fast there was not even air alarm before.

German here. The example with the Kebap owner is -probably- not like it seems, because there are usually two ways how it works:

1. these kind of stores are technically owned and legally run by somebody who just made the paperwork and gave the finances. The people working there dont do any paperwork, and of course they cannot as they often (like in the vietnamese produce stores) dont speak german on a level that would allow to fill out paperwork.

2. Lots of smaller business actually didnt fill out anything, and surpprisingly it somehow works for them, sometimes for years, even in busy areas, i mean they serve hundreds of customers per day but never filed any invoices, only accept cash, nobody speaks german and they dont have any documents. It's fascinating. There are a lot of rules in Germany (of course) when you serve food or alcohol or operate at night or have tables and chairs, and i can tell you it's not even legal to NOT have toilet or to not have prices on the menu, but well, they still run the business, probably without even knowing all the rules.

We can learn from them I think, just SHIP IT!

Can confirm, have some ideas: Apple uses different file formats "internally" and also different resolutions, maybe saving them all in parallel as "one" video, which might cause this issue. So the total space per image is actually the sum of original .mov, optimized .mp4 and thumbnail image.

Also, (automated) version history might have caused this! Maybe (automatic) image optimiztion saved old and new versions of everything.

Just stop it, radically, and open Slack only two times daily: in the morning for like 20mins, and in the end of the day for 20mins. Strict Slack timeslot. It doesnt matter how many unread messages there are, just ** it and do ONE thing at a time, and totally forget about everything except your actual work. Try it out ;)

you nailed it! this is exactly the problem. everything is horribly overcomplicated these days. i've 13 years of business experience and it gets harder and harder to even set up the most simple "hello world" demo of most frameworks. also the job market represents this insanity too: 5 years ago I easily got senior positions, now i don't even know the words inside most job descriptions even in my field. And on top of all, stuff like kubernetes, kibana and prometheus now also is often expected from a typical backend developer. absolute mayhem!

alternative: go for 0. But have an unlimited archive with important things.

Radically a) reduce AND b) organize these things. Take two weeks off (or similar), and stop EVERYTHING that comes in automatically from coming in automatically, but instead move feeds to bookmarks, so you can read these things IF YOU WANT. No newsletters (just bookmark the mainpages). Deactivate all notifications and alerts, unless your daily life depends on it.

Consume all open tabs, store important stuff in bookmarks and delete non-important things.

Take all your digital data and organize it properly, i'm using Apple Notes for all text infos (accounts, notes, ideas) and HDDs for storage (Movies, Music).

It's okay to have 5000 notes, if they are organized properly and OUT OF SIGHT. I have folder with subfolders just with recipes, places and cars I like, but it works fine. Use Folders!

Keep ONE "pinned" (Apple) Note on top, naming it TODO and just put everything that you REALLY have to do in there, work it down over the next weeks, no excuse. Get focus in your life. Spend your day doing this list, everything else is distraction.

Bonus: Remove everything from your smartphone that's not essential. Go berserk and delete the email app. No "incoming" stuff except real communication with real friends and family. No Slack, no email, no social media.

Bonus 2: Keep a clean computer: empty desktop, 1-2 tabs max, one task at a time, one monitor, one focus. Everything has it's place.

Bonus 3: Grab a friend or stranger and do this together, share your progress. This helps so much.

You have misunderstand what's happening here! This post was #1 on Hackernews, as the article tried to play with common triggers (which somehow worked quite well), letting people believe they are reading about a massive case of sexism - which is not the case here. This topic is often used in the "woke" bubble to literally start a social bushfire on social media pages and news sites. And now it has even reached Hackernews!

I think it's important to clarify what's happening here, as most readers are not greek and simply cannot instantly understand the background and/or dont have the cultural sensitivity to judge this topic correctly.

This article was spread to misinform, and - surprise surprise - , every critical comment was flagged / deleted for trivial reasons. It's sad to see Hackernews moving into a Twitter-like direction, where facts are ignored, but every words is examined for "correct behaviour" according to "the rules".

because intention defines how to judge an action. if somebody moves a knife into your body, then it can be a violent attack or a medical procedure. if you devide boys and girls into groups then it can be seen as sexism or a as a mindful act to ensure privacy and intimacy.

You are totally misunderstanding how this works. Accounts are closed because somebody files a complaint, usually somebody capable of the language and with a serious interest in taking down somebody.

In Germany this is usually done by political opponents, "activists", cancel-culture people and surely trolls too, and it has nothing to do with Facebook being originally a US-based company. From legal perspective, they are german company in Germany (and similar in most other countries too) and have to react to requests by authorities too. In China and Russia they (would) have to deal with the local laws too, if you like it or not.

As I explained before, these accounts are (usually) not spreading misinformation, they are doing the opposite: critizing stupid government activities, talking about medicial issues with the vaccination etc. And this is a major problem in Germany, as every critique is quickly shut down.

It doesnt matter what you think or believe, it's a fact that this is happening, and it's a big problem for every science-based society.

Yes! Facebook is not really a "US company", for each country they operate in they have to deal with the local laws, and they have lots of office and crews in each country, simply to comply to local issues. Facebook is reacting to 10.000s of legal requests in Germany alone PER DAY, coming from a wide range of actors (copyright issues, violence, hate speech, police, government).

It's bizarre that so many people are so naive thinking political issues on the web - especially on the big platforms - are not censored.
