Being single and having that level of anxiety and stress, multiply that times 10 with kids. That gives you an idea what life as a developer with little children is.

It is called the “hamster wheel syndrome”. You think you are getting where you want to get, just to find out that you are stuck in the same place where you started but a hell a lot of more stress and anxiety.

3- life is moving to fast (stupid Covid) to stop and do things that matter in life (family and friends)

The beauty of a simple life. Away from noise, stress and all things that make one miserable. Being content with simple things in life is nothing more than a beautiful life for you and your family.

I used the free tier account to play around for a while. I thought I had deleted everything before the end of the year free tier. I was wrong! For 2 months I paid $10 as I could not figure it out what the heck was running.

I had to close my account in order to stop the charges. Today when I hear anyone speak of AWS free tier for a year, first thing I warn them about is to make sure they keep track of what they create so they will know what to delete, otherwise they will keep buying Starbucks every month to AWS.

Working from home its great don’t take me wrong but, there are other factors for face to face and human interaction that are also invaluable.

In industry this might work great, for government this becomes challenging as the access to collaboration tools and services it’s challenging.

So depending on who you ask and where they work the answer will be relevant to a person and place of work.

- at work ask for a task outside of your normal job responsibilities / something different to try and change your thinking

- find someone to share / bounce your concerns with or simply to hangout with

- volunteer to a kitchen soup or some community event ( you will see with your own eyes real pain and struggle)

- visit a church or a social group therapy where people share their stories and find methods to help or recommend help to one another

- buy a camper and work remotely. Park that thing near a lake or water, sunset or sunrise close to a water scenery helps you think and appreciate little things in life that we take for granted due to the craziness that takes most of our daily routine.

These days we are so hyped on the cool shiny objects, but failing at the most basic concept, HSI = Human System Integration:

How can the schools just allow any free product to be installed in their systems simply because someone offered them said service or product for free. These (test subjects) are our kids. There should be boundaries set forth by the law not to allow any said system or service to collect any data on kids under a given age.

I guess as long as someone offers security - it’s ok to disregard privacy.

From the comments below on testing one’s experience, I don’t think that there is a way to actually test one’s soft skill experience, and if they are the right candidate for the job, other than leveraging the networking aspect for recommending a candidate for a job.

One important requirement for a senior executive job these days is their Soft Skills. If you can find a way to measure that, well you have solved a major issue.

We have come to a realization that in order for one to be considered of importance, one must own and get paid a large amount of wealth and income. Question is, why can’t the value of giving be considered of same importance? Giving can be any services, time, materials or more importantly your experience and your honest to god effort to provide help.

Usually requirements are at a high level and if the previous team broke them down further in (scrum terms) user stories it would be more beneficial. If the stories are not available, then I would consider looking at the complete/done requirements first then worry about the new requirements. The intent is for you to understand what the application does and what functions are executed while you perform a given business process / workflow.

(Edit) Forgot to mention one important factor. Make sure to build a good relationship with your manager so that he understands that you are doing everything you can to make this work. The conversation is better understood when the relationship is there. Keep him aware of the work you are doing so he understands it as well, and he will have the data upfront to share with the customers.

As a developer myself for many years, I take the following steps for a new project: 1- Familiarize yourself with the application, by using / testing all its functions

2- Understand the workflows within the user interface and then map each one of the workflows / business processes to the logical code and the logical code to the database calls / tables.

3- Once you have built that mapping (tree structure) then you can tackle each one of those functions without feeling lost in the entire code baseline

4- As you work on each of the workflows/ business processes you can start comment the code in your terms

5- IntelliJ provides functions to conduct dependency mapping of the code, and database tables to make sure you don’t have circular dependencies.

6- Once you have completed the walk through and identified the workflows / functions / business processes you can than put a weight on each of those. Large, Medium, Small size.

7- After completing that sizing, sit down with your manager and help him understand what each one of those means in terms of cost, schedule and performance.

8- if none of the above is done, you will have a really hard time coming up with a way to explain to the manager what will it take or when will it be done and how many people will it take if they give you a date to finish. Just because someone wants something done in their time, doesn’t mean it can be done in that time.

Last thought: please don’t get discouraged, if you feel stressed and pressured already, you have lost the battle. Do the best you can with the tools you have, even if it’s not someone else’s best.

As a racer of stock and late model cars, it allows the driver to maintain higher speeds at entry and exit of corners by utilizing every bit of track available to you. It’s more beneficial to you when the track is utilized at its entirety.

On corner entry you hug the yellow line as close as you can with full speed and much less braking, on exit because of the speed and always trying to apply minimal breaking the car it’s harder to turn so you apply enough breaking to maintain the car in the track and get as close to the corner as you can.

Amen.Been there done that.

Coming from a small third world country myself, I didn’t know what the market was until I was 19 and came to the states. Everything we needed to survive we grew it or raised it. It was a way of life, at 5 or 6 years old I was able to watch over our farm animals and knew exactly what was expected of me. Now a 6 years old can’t even put their own shoes on by themselves let alone know how to do anything related to self manage.

I don’t blame as much the kids, the way of life in an industrial country is all about wasting time and not helping kids learn and enjoy life. We as parents have failed to transfer our experiences because we are to damn busy trying to keep up with everything it’s going on around us, and in many cases a mobile device is enough to shut a kid up. Yes, we live in a sad world that we don’t know anymore what will happen if one day markets are no longer an option.

As a parent of Few Young kids (non teenagers) I have made it my mission to not give in to the social media BS. My kids will only get phones when they go to college. If they get a phone before then, it will be a dumb phone with no internet.

For the others that say, we all get distracted, well then you might have no clue what distracted means to someone with a kid. You ask them to brush their teeth, they bring their toothbrush in the living room just to watch TV. Phone for a teenager it’s the worst thing a parent can do (outside of the emergency reasons)

If you think a big company is convoluted, try the government where the internal tools and services never seem to do what they were meant to do, or even worst, they are almost always down. Another example, support sends you an email to tell you that the email isn’t working. One wonders, how the heck government even does anything.

And one wonders of why identify theft happens. OPM, Health Insurance, IRS, Credit Card companies, different websites you purchase from, have lost our information. Then they give you 1 year of free monitoring like that f.... matters. But to see a government owned agency to sale your personal information is beyond sick.

I hope that one day we get to really be the sole owner of our own PII. Maybe it’s a dream, maybe I am naive, but I sure do hope that day comes.

Is it due to another Fiber Cut somewhere? Recently almost the entire east coast was down due to fiber damage. I guess the cloud services are as good as the wires that run in the ground.

Interesting, although I wish more thought is put into the cost model upfront for any kind of mining that harms the environment prior to these excavations. By taking under consideration the cleanup process at the beginning, it eliminates the need to fight for funding after the mining is done. Although in communist countries all the government cares is to rip the benefits and not worry about the after effects.
