thanks for plugging and chugging it all out.

carbon engineering's carbon capture technology is projected to be significantly less than $600 tonne, they say the plant they are building for occidental petroleum in texas will be profitable from 1) cost of avoided CO2 purchases (CO2 is used to pump oil out of the ground) and 2) california CO2 credits for "low carbon oil" which is between $175 and $200 USD/tonne [0].

so if carbon ends up at $200 per tonne instead of $100, cost per gallon would be $3.11 + $1.96 = $5.07. If you drive a lot probably enough to nudge you towards an EV!

I challenge you to find a pirated copy of IEC 61362 "Guide to specification of hydraulic turbine governing systems" online. It does not exist. The company I used to work for, which specialized in turbine governing systems costing millions of dollars, would not pay the $300 for that document.

PDF is a great way to publish documents. which is what the web originally was.

The web has become a bad remedy to some distributed software problems.

it would be nice if it were a PDF I could download and save for later.

is there any way to turn a series of pages in to a PDF? like a recursive wget and then pipe through pandoc?

i have a pihole and have been worried that DoH would break it. i checked the network settings in firefox and the DoH setting is there but it is disabled.

I doubt that chrome will allow one to disable DoH but at least firefox does for now.

thanks for the link

that estimate indicated that the concrete damage observed would begin to multiply exponentially over the years, and indeed the observable damage such as in the garagehas gotten significantly worse since the initial inspection. When you can visually see the concrete spalling (cracking), that means that the rebar holding it together is rusting and deteriorating beneath the surface. Please note that the original scope ofwork inthe 2018 report has expanded. The concrete deterioration is accelerating. The roof situation got much worse, so extensive roof repairs had to be incorporated.

Because so muchof the needed concrete/waterproofingwork is underground, we must pull up almost the entire ground level of the lot to access the areas that requirerepair. That means we have to put itall backat the end. This includes the pool deck, the entire entrydriveand ground level parking, north side contractor parking, and planters/landscaping. Electrical work and plumbingare involved almost everywhere. Balcony concreterequires repair/waterproofing,and the railingsrequire repair. And-we have to bring all this up to current codewhen repairs are completed.

how can any engineer or inspector know that what they can see from a surface inspection means a building is about to collapse? How many buildings do they inspect with damage that don't collapse? all of them until this one. So when they see damage they say, this should be repaired, and then when the repair gets underway, maybe people see that it needs more than anticipated, and it all gets fixed. Probably by that point in time the inspector is out of the picture.

it ran for 101 seconds at .... 120,000,000 DEGREES CELCIUS!!

for comparison the sun is 15,000,000 degrees C.

I wonder how they measure a temperature that high.

There is lots of ag zoned land around me. nobody wants it rezoned to residential as that means more people and most people don't want more people around. People always buy the ag lots cause they are cheap and have low taxes if you have ag activity, and then want to build more housing on them than the zoning allows, because that is lucrative.

just use a septic field instead of the sewer hookup if the county won't play ball. then they can't increase your sewer rates every year.

you should check out kst-plot from kde it is great for real time plotting and watching of machines and processes. I use it all the time to make plots and zoom in on the interesting parts. It is so fast and easy.

Grafana 8.0 5 years ago

great. Ignition from inductive automation is good, but old players like Allen Bradley / Rockwell Factory Talk, Citect, Wonderware, need a kick in the pants to get with the times.

Grafana 8.0 5 years ago

Will grafana displace industrial historian and HMI software? historians just store time series data and allow you to plot it and cost $30k for a license? The HMI software suites usually have worse time series plotting and trending analysis than a historian but they allow you to put buttons on the screen to control your process, and come with some type of alarm display system.

I don't think it is an unfortunate narrative. two people wearing masks without valves is twice the reduction in likelihood that either one gives the other covid. If someone does have covid the mask without the valve will greatly reduce the concentration of virus particles in the air around them. I think that is working as intended!

ski-doo summit X 850: it is the freedom machine. A challenging new hobby that provides access to amazing remote places and an escape from busy corporately owned commerical ski areas. there is nobody around to tell you what to do or not do and where to go or not. plus it is your personal ski lift for powder skiing. Riding side-by-side with a friend hammering up a bowl is the most exciting thing I've done in years.

mills have been going out of business for decades since we are shipping whole logs overseas to be processed there.

Local small players, boutique mills if you will, can't even buy logs because the lots of logs that are put up for sale are so big only container-ship scale buyers are in the game.

I am 100% against exporting whole logs, we have lost so many jobs in the mills and supporting the mills.

there is no housing or land shortage - simply desirable houses in desirable locations are expensive.

Check out this website: https://www.cheapoldhouses.com/ there are many houses on there for not much money but they are obviously not in desirable locations. Some need some repairs but that is just time & materials not buying expensive land. So there is lots of cheap land and cheap houses.

Increasing density by tearing down some single family homes and replacing with townhomes is probably a workable compromise - now there are three dwellings where before there was 1, and everybody still gets a garage and a yard, but each of those townhomes will still be priced up to what the market will bear because there will not be an infinite supply of them.

In my town of 20,000 about 1000 dwellings are coming online significantly increasing the supply - potentially increasing the populatiog by 2000-4000 people, (up to 20%!) but they were all snapped up for $800-900k and now there is only one available for $1.2M.

People want to live in desirable places, and will pay more to do so. Nice places are always going to be expensive.

If you don't have a house you can hack the system by moving to a place with cheap dwellings and making it desirable, which is a normal pattern: Artists and musicians move to cheap neighborhood, it becomes cool & desirable

That is the reality for virtually everybody I know - university educated folks in Canada with white collar jobs. job gone - house gone within a year, and probably not saving much for retirement. We live in an area with a bubbly real estate market and a place to live in now and have a family home is more important than saving for 'retirement'. As we have all seen over the last 15 years the real estate market only goes up and savings in secure low return investments is is not a winning strategy, so you have to get in as early as you can or move away and say 'see ya' to your friends and family. The thinner you can stretch it when you enter the market, the higher you can lever yourself out, the better off you become in the long run! it is sick but that is reality.

I honestly don't know any of my peers to be without work, ever.

The mothers are taking less than a year off work per child and then they are back to work too. I think dual income families are another reason house prices have skyrocketed, get two YUPPIE 'DINKS' saving for their downpayment and 1% interest rates and yeah they can afford to bid up the price of a house.

Carpenters are getting $75/hr CAD around here in house construction, and a plumber is $125/hr, so per my grand parent commment people are also simply earning a lot of money so they can afford a $5k monthly payment.

edit: grammar

not all housing everywhere has gone up, just the desirable housing in desirable locations where people have excess income to spend on housing. Housing can gobble up as much of percentage of your incomine as you let it, and when incomes are large, and interest rates are low, the ceiling becomes quite high.
