How is this preventing anyone booting up an old pc and sharing a usb key data. This is utter nonsense made to control people and instigate fear and self censorship... this is 'the system' discovering the internet in slow motion and immediately pushing its boot over it. We live in an artificial moral panic that should have no place in the minds of smart people.

Unhinged capitalism will be the cause of the most devastating global crisis that is just around the corner. You can see it very easily on a simplex plot, you cannot solve for anything useful, like global quality of life, when there are parameters that have infinites, ie infinite 'growth' bullshit. We need to find a better metric, and forget about 'getting rich, work all your life' crap, when you are dead you take few cubic meters of space including ground, all your real estate 'investing' and stress, they just end 6ft under.

Also I think the real estate disaster is one of the main culprits of most 'common people' problems. One cannot afford an early retirement from a taxing job, cos guess what mortgage is a criminal 10-15x their yearly salary..so good luck pensioning before 70...if at all. Here in the UK this has reached absurd levels and nobody in the goverment says a word about it in real (and no, 'easier access to credit' is absolutely not the right answer)... pay 5-6 pounds for a filter coffee and a plain croissant.. cos the tiny shop has to pay 100k / year in rent.... it's just a road to civil war... hopefully soon.

I think there are a lot of misconceptions about GM crops, most people think they are modified to be resist/repel vast types of insects/pests and what not, this is in average not the case and very complex to implement, what they are really engineered for is simply to be very resistant to specific pesticides, very easy to control/predict as you have to target only the few chemicals that you spray. Unfortunately we all know what this means... tenfold increase of pesticides and faster destruction of the environment. Not to say that there aren't GM modifications in that direction, but it's not the norm.

I'll try to setup a meetup group with these premises, see what happens. At this point in life I feel like telling younger (or not) people the things I learned about 'life' in general, maybe it's old news to them, maybe not. For example I feel age is the biggest lie/misconception we face sometimes, we are all 'kids' and at some point we get wrinkles and get ashamed and feel out of place, and younger people think we are different and 'settled' and the we discovered who knows what grown up/adult mysteries, while we are just old kids.

It would take about 115k square miles of normal solar panels to cover the world energy use (23000TW), this translates to about 340 miles side square of land, I'm sure we could split this to various solar efficient locations and just close the deal with all this hydrocarbons Et al. BS. And can be solar parabolic-through systems instead of PV, no efficiency loss and night thermal storage built in. But of course we'll never unite and forget about profit and petty arguments just for once...World mechanics are just broken.

yep having a centralized pollution source is much more controllable and optimizable, a breakthrough in emission filtering techology and in a short time span it can be effectively implemented vs decades long new cars renewal cycle... although replacing a tiny percentage of roofs with solar tiles would make for a robust and smooth transition in sunny countries at least..

it looks like the vast majority of our pollution and energy generation through chemical/physical transformation (like the hydrogen in the article) could be rendered 'green' by remembering the free fusion reactor in the sky.. nearly all pollutant can be reclaimed by high temperature pyrolysis process, and hydrogen can be made without any methane by simply splitting ocean water. The catch? Just spend some years and build few gigascale solar parabolic through (my preferred, long lasting, robust, thermal mass even at night) or photovoltaic power plants and get let's start to properly treat the waste and energy needs, obviously once you have that much 'free' electricity you wouldn't need hydrogen, but for the sake of always having a b-plan, it wouldn't hurt.

When one considers the whole loop from incredibly polluting mining to disposing and keeping everything decontaminated in the process, fission nuclear should only be seen as a last resort option, as much as I see the great progress that has been made of course. I would have gone geothermal in Antarctica... with modern super depth drilling tech, and hot water as side effect, looks like a promising choice.

Add to that ridiculous food prices and fully criminal housing market both rent or buy(keep dreaming)..WFH is a super solid relief...yes I miss hallway chat the most.. and quicker to help people but still no comparison to the commute shitshow. I told many times to upper management that operative offices do not need to be in central London.... maybe now something will shift. To be honest nothing needs to be even in the UK... place is becoming a larger Singapore, finance and corps, rest is services for slaves with no hope of building a normal life, 1 to 1-3 times is the healthy ratio between yearly wage and property, here is like 1:12-14 ... complete criminal (they will have to lie to tell you that can finish paying it) and classist (only rich fucks or upper middle class kids with mommy and daddy bank can ever buy anything) if you ask me.

Zooming out: I think lots of comments suffer from a combination of workcentric view of life and old school puritan values where work is holy and good no matter what. In a true 'smart' society first thing you would do along with your skilled and big headed friends would be to figure out a way to fully automate everything and NOT work... Yes fix the odd broken stuff and help out when is needed, improve and innovate for the sake of optimization/discovery and scientific curiosity, but nothing mandatory to the actual single in order to have basic needs covered, food, housing etc. Money and all the financial system is a lame excuse to keep the status quo and everyone else under its control, with enough computational power you can forecast and implement very nice lifestyle for everyone, the ability to measure and compute nearly everything to a very good degree is something that only recently we achieved and we are not taking full advantage of. Simple example: Japan... too many old people too few to support them, yes we could automate most of the food chain and provide free housing for all of them, but we don't have -fantasy resource x (money)- to accomplish it, this is frankly ridiculous. If you can measure resources and make sure you use them in a reasoned manner you can cover most basic needs for everyone, the reason why it doesn't happen is the heritage of a feudal society who prized violence and subjugation of others and believed in invisible entities that would punish who was against them and/or the established power, and power needed slaves/workers. This was a blink of an eye ago historically.

my only trouble is the HW specs, I don't want a mid-low device, I am willing to spend the same I spend for a mid-high Android phone, as long as they manage to keep the basics working , ie solid browser, capable GPS navigation, port/wrap most used IM platforms. I used a Flame phone for a while, no major problems, until most IMs stopped working... people want to stay connected to everyone else... that's what 99% of users do.

after many many years of similar dread I came to this conclusion: I have been 'dead' for the past 13 billions years give or take, but then I have been incredibily lucky and won the 'consciousness lottery', that is, for a brief amount of time, just a flickering spark, I know what reality is, I experience what the Universe is, and carbon life on a still beautiful planet (hopefully we'll steer in the right direction), this to me outweights most of the fear... think how incredibly rare is conscious life, and you got super lucky to be aware of it, and yes the ride will end, but what a ride compared to a lump of carbon floating in the endless void forever. We are lucky.
