Project Beyond

Arc Roam is my holiday project this Christmas. I wanted to create an online, browser-based, mobile-playable "destilled" alternative to the old classic PC game Elastomania, (and it's unofficial multiplayer mod Elma Online). I used to play Elma religiously, but it stopped working on Mac (via Wine) last year, so hopefully I now have a way of getting my fix again! Now all I need is someone to complete against

The tech stack is pretty simple: - React / canvas (2d) frontend - express / ws backend - Fully ephemeral, no storage (to save money)

Technology-wise, I wanted to try out two things that I hadn't tried before for this project.

One was to use Expo to release on web and mobile at the same time. I've used React Native quite a bit in a professional capacity, so I wanted to check out the Expo landscape. I discovered that the web part (react native web) didn't quite deliver on what I was looking for, so I scrapped it and ported to Vite/react-ts and dropped native completely.

The other was to see if I could find a low-friction way of setting up subscriptions for a static web frontend with no first party backend. That is the reason why there is a premium subscription tier for a small weekend game like this. Turns out that this was pretty straight forward with Gumroad! In the end, I was pretty happy with the way the flow turned out (except that Apple Pay isn't supported without stepping out of the flow and heading to Gumroad directly).

We use the Web Audio API, HTML5 Canvas (with PIXI.js) and MediaRecorder to render and play-back generative music videos on the client side. However, it turns out that MediaRecorder can only work in real time, so unless you have a reasonably beefy computer, your video render might suffer from frame drops and random hangups. In an effort to eliminate these frame drops we moved the same js rendering code that we use on the frontend into a headlessly run Firefox instance wrapped in some additional node.js logic for controlling logic flow. That required splitting the rendering process into an offline pre-processing step for FFT analysis on the audio stream, a separate rendering job for rendering the frames themselves, then using ffmpeg to combine video frames, audio data and remuxing timestamps to ensure proper playback speeds.

I also tried to hack together WebRTC headlessly a while ago actually! I looked at GStreamer and Kurento, but ended up using Janus instead. Anyway, turns out you can use Xvfb, essentially a "fake screen", to headlessly run GUI programs: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xvfb , which is what we're doing with Firefox.

Firefox is one of those projects that just keeps on giving, and it's all thanks to the hard work put in by all the contributors. It's easy to forget that sometimes. We use Firefox headlessly to render videos at https://www.musicvideodispenser.com , a task that certainly wasn't the initial intended use-case for that browser, but it still works, and we have the Firefox team to thank for that!

We've gone full circle! This thing started as a stand-alone HTML page for dweets with ability to embed the code in the URL: http://arkt.is/t (hover to show editor). GitHub: https://github.com/sigvef/arktis-tweet-demo . Here it is with the same dweet embedded: http://arkt.is/t/Yy53aWR0aHw9MDtmb3Iobj0yMDA7bi09MS82NDt4LmZ... .

Incidentally, this is where the "dwitter" name came from: "demos" as in the demoscene (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demoscene) and twitter.
