It makes sense to write code by hand.

We are in a hype bubble and it can be hard to go against the grain. The bubble will calm down, as it has every other time: crypto, low code, outsourcing, SPAs, Java, AI that last time around (search for Lighthill report).

I agree with your concern about skill stagnation or erosion. Years ago we used to make fun of "architectural astronauts": developers who stopped implementing and instead used English to design systems for others to implement.

I'm guessing you have had the experience writing code where you throw away the first, second and maybe third implementations? While you "work out" what the real problem is? Our human brains need that niggling at the problem before we can make a good design. Don't short circuit it.

I am building a cloud hosting company that exposes the cloud as a single docker host. No VMs to manage, just containers and easy controls to set the number of CPUs, RAM, disk that you want your containers to have access to.

Joyent did something like this ~11 years go, and I loved using it, but then they where acquired by Samsung and shut down their public (non-enterprise) offering.

This is try 3 at building something as good, and it is working!

Yeah for hand crafted Rust!

Hello I'm Jordan, I have 15+ years of experience with full stack software development, and leading technical teams. I've been CTO a few times, worked in/for startups, consulted for fortune 500s, and worked on public sector modernization projects.

What I am good at:

- DevOps

- Building teams that get things done. I love getting to the point where product owners (voluntarily) say "how about you guys in engineering do whatever you think is best, because we need some time to think about these features requests before we know what more to build"

What I'm interested in:

- DevOps/DevEx improvements,

- Improvements to containerization, eBPF, MicroVMs, Linux internals

- I like smaller (< 50 person) companies of all kinds

I am flexible in regards full time, part time, contract, occasional consulting.

Phoenix — https://github.com/shofetim/phoenix

A multi-server process supervisor. Existing init processes (systemd, runit, s6, etc) work great on a single server but when you need to manage/deploy many servers, the tooling gets really complicated (K8s). Phoenix extends the process supervision model from one server, to many. Run this thing once / keep one copy of this around / keep this running on all machines that match pattern X etc.

Turns out the (obvious in hindsight?) problem is automated but simple networking. Currently digging deep into wireguard based overlay networking before rolling the next version of Phoenix out.

I am a senior software engineer, ex CTO, ex start up, etc. I do contract work full time and am looking for _one_ additional client.

I can help you with:

1. Building an MVP.

2. DevOps.

3. Scaling / creating a team / building out your team.

4. Solving hard technical problems.

If that sounds interesting, lets chat.

Alternatively if you run a small business or a non-profit, and just need some technical help, drop me a line, I'm interested.

How was your experience with the PineBook Pro?

I've been experimenting with ARM systems for the last year or so — changing how I compute to fit into the tighter limits of the SBCs etc. The governor settings and disk IO seem to be the most important points.

I've been eyeing the PBP (once they come back into production). What is the battery life like with the governor set to performance?

I use SQLite in production and it works great.

You should understand whichever RDBMS you use, and how to get the best performance out of it. Previously I used Postgres extensively, and it worked fine, and before that I managed MySQL servers. They are all fine, but SQLite is as simple as it gets, and more than adequate for most workloads.
