I live in an area where stationary speed cameras are around every corner (Montgomery Co, Maryland). I've lived here long enough to know that there's no way the county would spend money on the equipment and man power to maintain and operate that network, just to break even for the sake of safety.

Why not Detroit? The labor force is there, the costs (real estate, labor, taxes) must be considerably in favor of something of this scale, and it's in line with the automotive industry. In that Michigan is hurting from the down slide of traditional auto manufacturers, I would think it would endear Tesla to the industry, or at least the workers.

Exactly. You could extrapolate this into any "The [whatever] is dead" statement that we see so often. And it's not getting any easier - e.g. are we capturing and processing less data these days? Is the data we store less valuable?

You can't get a DBA from a college, from a technical school, or from any other form of formal education. Most DBAs these days are grown internally from developers or system administrators who decide to (or are forced to) specialize while on the job.

I can't say how much truth is in this statement. This stuff if learned organically by doing it on real world projects. It's scary at times to think that you just can't teach this stuff.

This is great work. Anyone have any references to animating an entire SVG object by location and size at the same time? For example, slide the SVG diagonally while increasing it's size. I'm particularly interested in doing this with D3 objects.

What will be fascinating is to watch what happens with youth sports once they start paying college athletes. It will no longer be about little Johnny getting a college scholarship to play for Note Dame, it will be about real money. Can't wait to see what the sidelines sound like at your local youth sporting event.

My first job after graduating from Maryland in 1984 - writing 6502 assembly for a voice/data switch and feature phones for GTE's OMNI series. Yes, the Leventhal book was all there was back then (it still sits on my shelf). I was working with some incredibly talented hardware and software developers, and the learning experience working with assembly and hardware was unmatched.

Later moving on to the Motorola 68000 series chips which were great, but just not as fun as working with the 6502. The 6502 was so simple and well designed, writing in assembly was actually productive.

To this day, the best job I've ever had.

I think this is true. However, the LC model was sharing - for free. So, I'm in the LC network, I can use any other space in the LC network. It's predicated on those folks being on the move quite a bit. Not sure how they could have monetized that.

I've experienced this "detachment" with friends and family. I sometimes have to make an effort to really engage in regular conversation. It's like programming, continuous learning, etc. take so much brain power that I start to go into self-preservation mode. In social situations, it's sort of "turn it off or you won't have anything left for dealing with development work".

Take a look at Concrete5. Fantastic, contemporary UI that is very quick on the uptake. Simple templating, built-in search, form builder, extensible, add-on modules, free and for-pay templates, good developer community.

We've worked with Wordpress, Drupal, DNN, and others, but C5 hits the sweet spot and is always our preference.

This doesn't take into account much in the way of risk. Really, those that take the most financial and legal risk (e.g. if the company goes under, who's on the line), should have significant impact on equity. Part-time vs. full-time does cover some risk.

Having a team as Mike describes will make all the difference when it comes to work/life balance and ability to deliver to their clients consistently. It sounds as through their culture is one where each team member is passionate about their core focus, and more importantly, has each others back. My read is that this team is very self motivated, reducing the overhead for managing it, and thus reducing a lot of the typical problems with "job shops".

I can't say I go for the completely "virtual" company, but I doubt you will find 11 people that fit a core culture in one geographical location, so I get that.
