It was, but it was next to impossible to get a half decent application released on any J2ME phone not to mention the impossible fragmentation (compare to the J2ME beast the Android fragmentation is a sweet tamed puppy).

Java is also installed on a bazillion desktops, numbers don't change the fact that the ui framework is very bad.

Historically applets lost to flash for that same reason

I went to the American consulte in Tel - Aviv about a week after they've changed the Visa procedure and had a missing form. The consulte did had a couple of PC's but non of them could access an email account.

I wondered to the street and found a coffee shop next to the consulte that provided all the services you'll need, lockers (this part is strange since you can't pretty much bring anything to the consulte e.g. a mobile phone lockers are essentials, I know that other consultes like the one in Sydney provides lockers), printer, and for a fee will feel up your forms.

So this isn't a new idea, but its an interesting phenomenon.

BTW I got my visa, and I must admit that the consulate service was outstanding

I was participating in a developers survey by Rim around a year ago (one of those where they grab 10 engineers and put them in a room for some cash) and the complaints were exactly the same!

That's the fun about Android, its a real mass market open OS and all the bugs are visible!!! Too bad its not for everyone to fix (or maybe its actually good?)

A year ago I had a gig for a big name prototyping an Android tablet. The message that was passed from other vendors was that Goggle were that they aren't looking into tablets. The project was cancelled. How wrong they were...

When Android 1.0 was released a lot of vendors approached it with caution, 2 years down the road same story again...

The magic of F1 cars in the last years was for that although the power output of the engines has decreased and so is the downforce due to regulations lap times have stayed consistent. Its fascinating to see how people like Adrian Newey keep on pushing the envelope to produce brilliant cars with tough regulations.

From an industry point of view its always the DB size that matters. When MS bought Giant it was due their DB size, it was huge and useless e.g there were installers that generated random guid for active x controls, registering those guids as a signature was pointless but they still went with it, when it was time to sell the MS guys fell for it. I worked for a company that was sold eventually and it was the same story when the founders decided that its time to sell it was all about the number of signatures.

On a different note: I wonder how this happened in the first place, the security companies that I worked for were pretty strict on code access, I couldn't checkout any code I wish, only a few people could pull the entire code repository.

I'm a not born Aussie who lives in CA.

The post was fun to read and I can pretty much agree with everything.

One difference that I spotted was the accent barrier. For non English speakers Australia can be painful it doesn't matter how good your English is you find yourself repeating your sentences, or spell out every name in the family including my boys English names (no Aussie could understand the name Dean when it came out out of my mouth). In California no such issues (I felt vindicated when I moved over here) only comments that my English is too British (which is the result of the effort I put to get Aussies to understand me).

Another thing that I miss about Australia is that life aren't serious, every man is with in his right to make an arse of himself any now and then and that's just fine.

One thing that I don't miss is the property obsession, everything in Australia is about the property. We don't build proper highways because we can stuff in a few more units, we don't build a railway because it will generate noise which will hurt the property market in that area. If you want to build a startup it will sense only if it will: speed up building property, help people pay the mortgage on the property, help banks claim the mortgage on the property etc...

All I want to add is that I do wish the Health / Education to be here as in Australia.
