Yeah, strong agree here. Nielsen brought a certain weight of rigor to the debate back in those days which made sense to the way I wanted to think about web design as an engineer. I don't really think there's a "winner" or "most right" person amongst the trio, but Nielsen's ethos appealed to me more than the others mentioned.

Lots of social commentary here, but I'd just note you're one mad lad. This is a great writeup and a nifty bit of sleuthing. I found it enjoyable to read.

I use them to make legal contract review less toilsome, but I suppose that's a hyper-specific endeavor.

Muji notepads (if you're close to a Muji) have the distinction of being both reasonably priced and nice to look at IMHO. They also have a lovely selection of writing instruments of all types.

Will be interested to see why I would use this instead of Envoy or similar FOSS. One obvious thing would be giving the operational work to Cloudflare instead of doing it myself, but beyond that it reads like "we built an internal thing in Rust."

pp. 76-77 of Ousterhout's "A Philosophy of Software Design" talk about the issues with boilerplate try-catch. He basically does not approve, as they make readability suffer and often do not do what they advertise (truly catch errors.) I don't know how he would feel about production assertions, but I'm guessing he would buy into it if it helps reduce complexity. In the sense of finding remedies to troublesome bugs--which will occur.

Yes, the prevalence of studies that report averages are what you are referencing--though you don't provide any. But, there are plenty of anecdotes (e.g. the several Google Sheets pay experiments folks have run) showing disparity. I am a sample of one, but I have seen this disparity--and, worked to fix it--with folks I've managed over the years as well. So, I do not agree with absolutes like "that is not the case."
