If I could change one thing about Duolingo, it would be to allow the user to turn off all the gamification completely. I don't care about fake internet gems, knowing how to speak Chinese (or whatever) is it's own reward, so stop wasting my time with bs!
Nevertheless, Duolingo is an amazing and convenient starting point for unlocking the learning of new languages.
Make your way through the entire course as fast as you can, while also listening to music, talking to people, talking to chatGPT, reading books, etc in the target language as soon as you can manage.
Protip: learn your 3rd language using your second as the language of instruction.

The formality/informality distinction is between You/Ye and Thou/Thee.
Plural 2nd person used to formally address a single individual came to English from French, thanks to the Norman Conquest.
French, I think, inherited it from Latin, and the custom of addressing the emperor with the plural.
After a while it became rude to address people with the informal 2nd person singular.
By the time of the King James Bible, iirc, English had already switched to universal "you", and "thou" was brought back in order to indicate where the source text had used a singular versus a plural.

EDIT: I don’t think that really answers your question. The real answer is that, to a certain extent the words as written don’t matter so long as enough voters and decision makers decide that they don’t.

"Jargon" sounds pejorative to me, and implies that the phrasing is difficult for outsiders to understand.
"Term of art" only implies that it is the specific phrasing used by practitioners to describe the matter at hand.
Your examples are very revealing of a larger problem.
Not only are these viewpoints, which you claim can only be argued in bad faith, supported by empirical evidence, but the people who dare to support them publicly are risking social and financial ruin. If "unsafe" and "marginalized" do not describe their situation, then the words have no meaning.
As a minority from one of the groups at the unflattering end of the crime rate distributions, it is my lived experience that the type of censorship you are advocating for is what makes me feel unsafe.
Inconvenient empirical truths about my community can not be discussed in the sort of polite and caring settings where the seeds of real solutions that don't ignore reality could germinate.
