David Brooks is not a good writer, yet he has a column in the NYT. Meritocracy. The end.

Strong disagree on that. Reddit has bots and a massive troll population, neither is present in such a way that affects user experience.
Not sure why this comment is gray, it’s informative. Sounds like a similar situation to Notch who worked on Minecraft.
Enjoying reading the content on your site - Mixcloud is a platform I use and the backend breakdown is really interesting.
Totally possible. https://youtu.be/0o_9CHYeRvI
Make it play the Spongebob theme and you’re set.
Must be extremely difficult to be a programmer who is unwilling to adapt to changes in language usage.
HN seems to have a small subset of vocal critics who echo the ideology of edgy YouTube pundits. Maybe they align with being fans of Cheetos and other gamer culture commodities?
There’s another offshoot discussion on this thread about how “Latinx” is a ‘white academia term’ and therefore it’s racist. Yet another about gender fluid pronouns and how using preferred pronouns is a burden some are unwilling to accommodate. It has to be the Cheetos.
Oddly enough kids are using GDocs for messaging in school and during study sessions, etc. Not something to build a network around since they are used as ephemeral ad hoc chat spaces.
Or you could mind your own business about something that doesn’t affect you at all.
This post about Cheetos seems to have attracted a lot of complaints about imaginary leftists and ideological bubbles. Very odd.
I’m with you on this... guess that makes me a pessimist.
International studies major, long ago. This article is fascinating.
The last massive protests that looked like this took place in multiple cities over several weeks. That was leading up to the Iraq war. They were ignored.
Gamergaters were not victims, they were denounced and derided because of their doxxing and gang stalking activities on the boards. Their actions led to their removal from 4chan.
The notion that when a group or person is accused of being racist/fascist it inevitably makes them then embrace that ideology is just not credible. Denouncing racism is easy enough to do, but they didn’t, or they did insincerely.
The alt right sells victimhood as a reason to be part of their in group. It’s constantly pushed that white males are under attack. They aren’t.

In response, the principal of the high school sent a note to students and parents Thursday night regarding the "hate-based video and text posts attributed to one of our students":

The “alt right is the new punk rock” is one of their marketing pitches. Apparently it works, but only for a certain demographic.
Gamergate was fueled by outside interests way beyond “ethics in journalism” and anger at feminist game critics. The online outrage was easily led down a much broader path.

This is exactly what happens. Prager U and Ben Shapiro advertise heavily on content adjacent to them (gaming) and their views go up, up they go in the algorithm.
I’d say having a 13 year old far right YouTube star post a video threatening to kill the CEO might be harmful, but maybe that’s ok?

Mobile games get frequent refund requests and devs are more than a few steps removed from the actual accounting from app stores. The analytics might throw an event if there’s a hook for a refund request but Apple and Google own the bank in a black box. Basically devs get a monthly statement with refunds subtracted from their cut.
Harmless lonely teens who may be play-acting on 8chan are encouraged to become true believers by the rest who are sincere. The shooter involved in this case stated that he’d only been on 8chan for a year and a half and had learned much in that time. At some point the “fun” of it crosses a line for minds that have a strong enough foundation to leave it behind, those that stay become invested in the ethos. They embrace the allure of being the righteous underdog in a battle for the “future of white America”. Empathy and compassion are the enemy.
I was a hands on stay at home parent. Kid still had a few tantrums. Every kid is different, you’ll probably observe that when your next arrives.
I was a skeptic about the supernanny too and I don’t watch the show but her book has a technique to help reluctant sleepers adjust to staying in their own beds that really worked for my kid. He’s a teen now and still has a hard time falling asleep, it’s just how he’s wired.
The book 1-2-3 Magic tames even the wildest kids if you are consistent. It feels humane to give kids a few chances to change their trajectory. Highly recommend.

This is a repost but since you’re interested - Netflix data science is very pro-Jupyter/Python/data analysis packages. https://medium.com/netflix-techblog/notebook-innovation-591e...
Netflix uses Jupyter for data science quite heavily: https://medium.com/netflix-techblog/notebook-innovation-591e...
But that’s for data science which is (hopefully) the foundation of actionable BI.
This is great. AC is an old friend of mine, you guys are doing amazing work at ProPublica. Nice to see the tech work that runs behind the stories.
