I tried out many names, but .com domains are all taken. Hesistant to take on the Web2.0 funky .ly etc domains.

An excellent summary and wakeup call yo all marketers out there. Marketing isnt just about rolling out in various marketing channels, but to fundamentally spread the purpose in which a startup/project/product was created in the first place. Looks like Simon Sinek's concept of "Start with Why" was the start of genuine marketing :)

I am commenting from the perspective of someone who is not in the US. Currently from the Asian region (excluding China), valuations are no where near that of the US. In Singapore alone, even with for a startup with vast customer based overseas is being acquired for only $10million. Yet, that $10million acquisition is more than enough to make the startup a superstar in our ecosystem.

Perhaps this bubble is only present in the states, but elsewhere in the world, valuations are still reasonable.

I got a copy of Heads First! introduction to software programming, and it started out with Python first.

It appears that python is the easy to learn..but Ruby seems to be the common lang that most web startup use these days.

Will i be at a disadvantage if I choose to start with Python first?

Notahacker, i just realised you made an very good observation of Singapore: her being an excellent implementor but not an innovator.

I really do hope that the Singapore government's efforts to revive its education curriculum works out well. Previously (and rampant in the age group of today's 14-22 years old), students take pride in their ability to organise large conferences and overseas trips. All these demonstrate and place glory on the ability to implement projects. However, it forgoes the emphasis on the ability to create.

Creation is probably what Singapore is in desperate need to sustain its crazy economic growth it still experiences till this day.

this came in quite timely just when I was writing up an article on how Del.cio.us is no longer as relevant as it used to be. Its inability to enable users to share.comment/basically discuss about the article renders in inferior compared to others such as Facebook and Tumblr.

perhaps its the ease of the paper chase + high personal expenditure (housing and car) that is the problematic combination.

that is true. we were taught to do well in school. I know that this phrase has been repeatedly used to describe our youths, but it holds a lot of weight. How many of us would have dared to risk scoring below 200 for our PSLE to explore building up a nice webpage, or a nice storefront for our Neopets shop? All these experiences are actually the start of programmers.

I am guilty of being caught up with the grade chase, having gone through a good secondary school followed by JC, and now Uni. I find it too late for me to realise this only now. But i am not disheartened. We need more superstart stories like the acquisition of Brandtology and Beeconomics to let the youths realise..it is never too late to start.

thanks for your recommendation on the incubator system! in fact, Singapore is starting to pick up in since last year. There is now a Singapore chapter for Startuproots. Perhaps we are on to something in the next 5 years :)
