I definitely think 20% is not that crazy, especially considering the gains those railroad investments are probably still paying to this very moment.

I can give you some anecdata on this. Just yesterday I was talking with my Trump-supporter family members, and they literally had no idea he'd been convicted for felony fraud - they thought his only charges were related to the sexual assault accusations from E. Jean Carroll and they hand-waved those away with gusto anyway.
So to answer your question: It's all fine and going on as expected for them, and if you tell them otherwise you're labeled an alarmist crybaby democrat.
I think you're joking but there was a company in my area that famously stuck by their "mob programming" approach where 5+ developers would sit in a room, 1 would drive, and the rest would fill out an adjoining document.
We’re so good at it we’re going to outcompete ourselves in fact
Replication is great but it’s not the only way science learns and it would be foolish to put that kind of limit on publishing your work.
That seems appealing but then as the applicant you’re at the whim of a LLMs biases, which are even harder to discern than humans.
Except that’s a regular experience I’ve encountered while job hunting this winter. It’s either that or what, don’t apply to a good job that I want? The applicant has no leverage in these situations.
I got hired off of a HN thread a few years back. Worked on an open source message queue in Go for a year or so before lay offs hit. Overall, I’d do it again, HN is a solid culture fit litmus test apparently.
I think it’s more widespread than you might think. Flat earth and similar conspiracies play on distrust in academia, which is absolutely flourishing right now.
Ive seen this referred to as “AI drift” before and I see it being a long term problem of data sets for training. As always, the quality of the data set determines the quality of the results. Models and data sets will be the arms race in the LLM world for a while to come, I think.
I wrote an open source one in Go that I'm still working on. It's never meant for production. The code is at github.com/dylanlott/orderbook and there's an accompanying write up on it at dylanlott.com/orderbook if you're interested.
"Boycotting", "cancelling", both seem to be democracy in action. And non-majority views is too ambiguous a definition. This would put vegans on the same side of the scale as extreme race purists.
This is a false premise. Without understanding why each account was banned and what infraction was cited we can't make a clear comparison or judgment about either case. Otherwise it's just more outrage-porn.
I don’t understand the inclusion of cancellation in this argument. How is cancellation different from boycotting, a right long upheld by the Supreme Court with direct legal ties to freedom of speech?
caring only about money
Seems to me this would make them the _most_ political entity.
Why the sympathy for these white collar criminals that have ruined lives in numbers comparable to crimes that we lock other people up for decades for committing?
Highly recommend fly.IO. I have stopped reaching for anything else. For go servers, I just copy their Go starter template and deploy it. It is the fastest way I’ve found to get a project up. You can immediately get into an iteration loop and build tests and even staging environments around it inside of a days worth of work.
A majority in one company of an overall underrepresented demographic isn’t the oppression that you so desperately want it to be.
“Here’s a reality check for you with a completely different scenario but a conclusion that reaffirms my bias”
It’s really a terrible argument to compare hiring for a physically intensive job to hiring for technical and administrative roles. it borders on bad faith.
I’m frankly just disappointed. There’s a comment in this thread questioning how much they had to “dumb down” the interviews for women. It’s fucked up in this field and it frustrates me to no end because the women I’ve worked with are far and away some of the best and they constantly deal with this attitude. It’s not okay and the bar should be higher for this orange website.
I don’t think I will, thanks
It’s not identity politics to call out blatantly sexist statements that question the intelligence and capabilities of women in this field.
The men aren’t being “sexually discriminated” against, they’re being competed against and that threatens you. Grow up.
The pool is skewed male because of sexist bullshit. Computers used to be viewed as predominantly clerical and thus women were far more prevalent. And it’s patently false to assume it has to effect hiring quality at all.
This is disgustingly sexist. Some of the brightest engineers I know are women. Get that attitude off this forum, it does not belong here.
Why is that mind blowing?
I have friends that have faced longer prison sentences for a couple bags of weed in their backpacks. she, her lawyers, and her “previous trauma” get no sympathy from me.
Is pdf that bad? I personally like it for being one of the more reliable formats for packaging rich text deliverables.
It's a term that was _coined by_ fiscal conservatives, it's not a "rebranding as a propaganda exercise".
I guess I’m not that surprised after seeing that balance sheet from FTX floating around.
Crypto hedge fund Galois Capital said roughly half its capital is stuck in FTX, according to the Financial Times.
This is astounding to me. I would be curious how long they kept their money in an exchange and if that’s common practice among other firms.
