I'm a Trump supporter so take this with a grain of salt.

Immediately predict lame rhetoric about how bad the media is.

When he said the media was dishonest, he was referring to CNN, WaPo and the mainstream media (excluding Fox News).

Oh right, the bastion of correct reporting, fucking Fox News. Questioning Obama's birth certificate. Warning about his terrorist fist jabs. Rightly admonishing him for asking for Dijon Mustard.

As a litmus test... the fact that almost every liberal in America is yelling at Trump more than they're yelling at the DNC

The current president vs something that happened 8 months ago.

doubled-down on Hillary the loss wasn't just technical––it was a landslide[1]

It wasn't a fucking landslide. 13th closest election in history by electoral college, massive loss in the popular vote. This is why Trump supporters need a fucking reality check and should maybe try some of that mainstream media. You are hooked on his propaganda and lies.

Wasn't the previous Canadian prime minister at least as xenophobic as Trump?

God no. They passed a (bullshit) law saying that they could revoke the Canadian citizenship of someone under specific circumstances. You had to be a dual citizen (or eligible?) and commit one of a few crimes.

- obtaining citizenship by fraud (this I think is entirely reasonable) - committing an act of terrorism - treason - taking up arms against Canada

The liberals repealed some of this already (IIRC everything but the portions about fraudulently obtaining citizenship).

What will prevent Canadians from out-crazying the US in the next major election?

We have a sane electoral system and just generally aren't as crazy.

Surely, you must be joking. WP has been pretty blazen in disregard in their "facts" during the election and have most blatantly been pushing an anti-Trump agenda under Bezos's guide

Can we please not allow HN to become the type of place where garbage like this is allowed? Pointing out bias is one thing, but the campaign against reputable news sources is ridiculous. If you believe they are wrong then provide evidence, any sort of alternative viewpoint.

The wholesale writing off of news (previously reputable) news organizations is nothing more than a brazen attempt to weaken trust in the media and remove their ability to act as a check on government actions. The washington post is "fake news", they can't be trusted, the story they just broke which is clear and reliable evidence of watergate level misconduct is obviously a lie.

because apparently we (people on visas) are getting horribly underpaid. Trump supporters keep trumpeting this despite the fact that I don't remember showing any of them my pay stubs.

I'm sure Brin showing up in person at the protests was totally because a couple hundred google employees getting screwed is going to drastically raise salaries.

As for people less competent then me. Maybe they should focus more on improving their skills than on how they are getting fucked by immigrants. Guess what, you'll still be whiny losers if they toss out the H-1Bs tomorrow. You'll still be whiny losers if they start tossing out green card holders.

You know why? Because you whine instead of going out and figuring out what you actually need to do in order to get a job.

I'm (selfishly) for keeping them because I don't want to get stuck in line with the huge backlog of people from India and China. That's a lousy reason though.

I'm not going to spend a decade living a shitty life waiting though. So if the per country caps go I might just give up.

No it doesn't.

India has a massive backlog of green card applicants. Obama's order makes it so taht people who are already here working under H-1B laws can cut ahead of that line and start getting green cards. That's a change in priority.

Otherwise these people are stuck here tied to a company for a decade+. That's shitty for everyone but hte company.

If you really want H-1B visas to not be abused then you should be in favor of more reasonable paths to PR and citizenship.

Yeah, RTFM. Read the fuckin manual.

You have google, you have docs on whatever you are working with. Figure out the solution for yourself. Worst case you can't, but you might learn something else while trying.Depending on what you rae doing you might find some mailing lists, forums, or other dedicated communities.

oh, and there is always the person sitting a few feet away.

Since when does the south or west virginia go for democrats?

Clinton lost because she wasn't able to get out her base in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania.

If Trump lost Texas you wouldn't be talking about how he failed to reach voters in Washington.

Eric Ruark, director of research at Arlington, Va.-based NumbersUSA, which advocates for limited immigration, said Mr. Trump could use an executive directive to tighten the U.S.’s Optional Practical Training, or OPT, program.

The OPT program gives foreign graduates in fields like science, technology, engineering or math the right to find jobs in the U.S. for up to 36 months, depending on their degree subject.

Mr. Trump could roll the time limit back to the original 12 months, the threshold until it was expanded under President George W. Bush in 2008, and tighten the eligible fields of study.

Come study here, then GTFO.

In addition, Mr. Ruark said the president could end a provision announced under President Barack Obama in 2014 that allows spouses of H-1B visa holders to work in the U.S.

Sigh.

I don't think the solution is "lets make lives shittier for skilled immigrants". Just end the visa at that point.
