The original submission-title was more descriptive (something like: "The Oldschool PC Font Pack v2.0 Released: 133 fonts added, new online index"), but I assume a moderator edited it to the current, more concise, one.

Feature-wise, the new version offers about 3 times as many "oldschool" fonts as the previous version, and also introduces the use of several techniques not typically used elsewhere to make the fonts more palettable for modern use (aspect correction, embedded bitmaps to bypass anti-aliasing). Also the online font index has more details regarding each font.

I would say that a very detailed online font index and fonts that are now much more palettable for modern use, may well be grounds for new discussions.

v2.0 of this was released just a few days ago, after several years without a major version. Hence the submission.

Btw, thanks for doing the hard and important work of moderating hn! [Edit: I realize now that the last part may come off as sarcastic, so I want to emphasize it is sincere. While here I disagree with the action, I'm generally very thankful for the moderators' work.]

Nothing immediate regarding a web-only service, sorry, but it obviously makes sense to expand the service in that direction.

HIBP is indeed great and you can actually subscribe via email to get real time alerts. It's limited to credentials exposed via dumps.

If you use the LogDog app, your online accounts are continously monitored for suspicious access. It sends an alert to your phone and prompts you to review the issue and change your password if necessary. We're trying to make it as understandable and as easy to operate as possible, so even technically-unsavvy people could benefit.

That being said, there's no getting around education. It's key to prevent a person from being scammed out of their passwords or oauth-access in the first place.

I have to say that I'm a bit conflicted about this.

On the one hand, there's nothing wrong with "splitting" HN, especially by geography. The main reason being that news that would interest only hackers in a specific region/country wouldn't see the light of HN's front page, as global readers just wouldn't care as much. As a matter of fact, I even run an "HN splinter" myself, for Israelis (https://bitorama.com), and I'm pretty hopeful about it.

That said, the EU is a pretty big and diverse place. Would a guy from Romania or Finland be more likely to find stories that interest him in an EU-wide site rather than in HN? I'm not convinced. Maybe a more regional approach is required.

Then again, I could be proven wrong. So best of luck to the guys running the site!

CouchDB fits the bill. It's all about documents, persistence and defining indexes for range-queries. Keep in mind two things:

1. It's all on the disk. So, while its throughput is excellent (thousands or more requests per second), each individual request has a latency of ~10ms

2. You define your indexes beforehand (called 'views' in couch terminology), and then you can only make simple queries on them - like by a specific key or by a range of keys. It takes some learning.

If you and your app are ok with both, go for Couch.

The name "NoSQL" doesn't give much technical insight into the product, so why name it so?

Marketing, I'd say. It's a very buzz-y term.

Unfortunately, it's not too useful for websites in right-to-left languages, like Persian, Arabic and Hebrew.

HTTPS shouldn't be much of a performance issue to an all-text site such as HN. I run a HN-like site in Hebrew, and I recently made the switch myself (https://bitorama.com). Traffic there is a lot lower than in HN, but so far I haven't noticed any latency issues.

The change went smoothly with nginx, though I'm not certain this data point is relevant to HN.

You shouldn't really worry about the Reddit comparison, as there are many more potential users in the world than there are redditors. On top of that, you are free to pivot as you like, while Reddit's users won't let it change.

I think he's trying to say that venture capital isn't the only route to typical entrepreneurial goals; such as self-fulfillment, being your own boss and a comfortable life.

Note that he doesn't say that every typical goal could be satisfied by a lifestyle business (goals such as changing the world in a matter of years, or making loads of money).

So a few months ago, I started a similar site in Hebrew[1].

My rationale was similiar to the OP's: most Israeli techies have no problem reading English, but when it comes to posting comments or writing blogs, lots would prefer Hebrew. Still, there are differences between the two sites: a site in Spanish has lots more potential HNers, but on the other hand, a site in Heberw has the benefit of supplying Israeli-specific news.

While my site hasn't yet taken off, I'm certainly encouraged by similar efforts that do succeed. So kudos to the OP, and good luck!
