Could you post a few links to these things? Last I remember there were a few PoC around pushing toy-scale examples, but nobody close to "quantum supremacy for application X"?

A cursory google still seems to indicate people are using these things to learn how a hypothetical QC could be used in practice, rather than actually doing stuff in production or anything close to it.

Sure, professional bowlers use specialised shoes. Professional footballers and professional runners and cyclists and golfers and tennis players and skateboarders and ... do as well. But if you do any one of these activities at a low enough frequency and/or level that you're not buying your own specialised shoes, whatever sneakers you have will do just fine.

This is far too bleak a view. I've been doing a wide range of academic writing, from journal papers to successful Horizon Europe grant applications, for the past 15 years. And it's no more difficult to achieve success today with 100% non-AI contributions than it was in the before times.

In fact, some of the most difficult parts of science - building relations, collaborations and consortia; formulating new hypotheses that are actually interesting and will get you noticed; giving convincing presentations on stage; are things AI is terrible/useless at.

Some people want to require device attestation, so you could only do this handshake from a government approved device running a government approved operating system. Forget using Linux or maybe even a general purpose computer at all.

The reason this is a non-problem for the purpose being discussed (age verification on social media) is that you can simply allow anyone with a de-Googled phone or using Linux on a laptop (or even Mac or Windows) to bypass the age check. I don't know about you guys, but half of the time I give Opus something actually complicated, it spends 50+ minutes trying to understand the problem, running lots of searches and tool calls, and then gives up and just writes a brief summary of what it thought about. Biggest waste of tokens you can imagine.

I'm a casual gamer who also played TA in the olden days. I have enjoyed playing through the BAR scenarios / tutorials and have had fun playing maybe 100-ish hours against the built-in AIs.

It's a good solo game, especially with the focus on "quality of life" improvements that reduce the need for raw APM to play well.

We faced this problem recently when doing an old-fashioned experiment to test a hypothesis. Can you trust the images from your phone to check if phenomenon X has occurred or not? What if the AI model processing the image just hallucinated what you wanted to see?

It is Descarte's evil demon incarnate. Yet another incentive to preserve my old mirrorless camera.

FWIW, I had a 4K monitor from 2016 - 2019 that I had to run at 24 Hz due to hardware limitations in a KVM switch. I used this for my day job and experienced no noticeable side effects, even for CAD work. Then again I always disable all animations in my OS.

You can already do this with apps like Kira. I believe it is especially good on the iPhone variants with LiDAR.

The people who drill a hole in the ground and then a valuable product literally flows out of it, make more profits when prices of that product go up, compared to the refiners and resellers of the valuable product. I don't think this is mysterious?

Jokes aside, the upstream side has costs (both capex and opex) which are predominantly independent of the actual oil price, but income which is tied to it.

It's like with NVIDIA: their cost of producing a B200 is not directly related to the cost of (and demand for) Claude Code, but what they can charge for a B200 is.

Parents are massively on board.

And they are probably moving to a system where you need to link your device with a government issued cryptographic ID (i.e. passport) using zero knowledge proofs. With a system that ensures an identity can only be installed on one device at a time.

This means a parent would have to give up all social media accounts and chat apps on their own phone, in order to give their identity to their kids.

The tech bro CEOs are used to bossing around people much smarter than themselves by virtue of adopting a posture that displays their confidence in their own reproductive organs. They are planning that the AGIs will be the same thing writ large, and have in fact not contemplated other possibilities.

That isn’t happening with how we make computers today.

Keep here in mind that computers today have features approaching the size of a single atom, switching frequencies where the time to cross a single chip from one end to the other is becoming multiple cycles, and power densities that require us to operate at the physical limits of heat transfer for matter that exists at ambient conditions.

We can squeeze it quite a bit further, sure. But anything like 20-30 orders of magnitude is just laughable even with an infinite supply of unobtanium and fairy dust.

The battery costs $7-$12 to produce and ship to your location, so kind of strange to say $70-$120 is cheap.

It's a philosophical thing, sure. But the EU is taking the approach that businesses should make honest money by selling quality products, not through consumer-hostile practices like inflating the cost of spare parts + labour for fixing stuff.

In the past our family has had several Android phones where the battery was easily replaceable. We even had a couple of Motorolas where the screen was a simple and cheap thing to replace. That seems to be increasingly a thing of the past.

With those phones, I have never once experienced a failure mode related to seams / screws holding the phone together. If it's one thing that's extremely well known technology, it's fasteners and gaskets for consumer products.
