Jio also has its own streaming service, which doesn’t count against your data caps.

How does this work? AFAIK JioCinema uses Akamai for content delivery... do they not count data for traffic from their own hosted edge caches or is it something else?

Duck DNS 3 years ago

I use DuckDNS for letting Alexa and Google Assistant access my Home Assistant devices.

Not needing to click on a link to “renew” my host name every month is a huge plus.

The biggest issue however is that it doesn’t support CNAMEs so I can’t migrate to a Tailscale Funnel address without redoing the entire setup, since I have a VPS configured to reverse proxy Home Assistant from home, through Tailscale of course.

In my experience, ISPs DNS servers are slower compared to 8.8.8.8 or 1.1.1.1, especially for "complex" lookups where there are as many as 6 CNAMEs in the DNS chain.

Also, they often run a single instance of bind, with little to no load-balancing.

This is a little weird for me:

Using Cloudflare's 1.1.1.1:

  ~> curl -s --doh-url https://cloudflare-dns.com/dns-query https://mensura.cdn-apple.com/api/v1/gm/config | jq -r .test_endpoint
  sgsin3-edge-bx-008.aaplimg.com
  PING sgsin3-edge-bx-008.b.aaplimg.com (17.253.61.15) 56(84) bytes of data.
  64 bytes from sgsin3-edge-bx-008.b.aaplimg.com (17.253.61.15): icmp_seq=1 ttl=52 time=74.2 ms
If I use 8.8.8.8:
  ~> curl -s --doh-url https://dns.google/dns-query https://mensura.cdn-apple.com/api/v1/gm/config | jq -r .test_endpoint
  hkhkg1-edge-bx-007.aaplimg.com
  ~> ping hkhkg1-edge-bx-007.aaplimg.com
  PING hkhkg1-edge-bx-007.aaplimg.com (17.253.85.13) 56(84) bytes of data.
  64 bytes from hkhkg1-edge-bx-007.aaplimg.com (17.253.85.13): icmp_seq=1 ttl=54 time=107 ms
Seems like I'm two different PoPs depending on which DNS I'm using.

I was using Quad9 until they had infra issues where latency skyrocketed from ~40ms to an unstable ~250ms... soon after I noticed that the routing was changed to another country with a latency of stable ~70ms.

A DNS resolver in another country breaks several things for me such as Wi-Fi Calling and certain CDNs that do not support EDNS Client Subnet, so I'm using Cloudflare Gateway DNS (DoH) for the time being.

I think this government does not have problem with criticism

but internal and external forces who doesn't much on Modi in politics plays same card again and again.

Is the BJP's "IT cell" spreading propaganda on HN now too?

EDIT: totally wrote that without checking out parent's profile

unable to stream HD Content to my iPhone

Yeah this has been the case since forever. It prioritizes instant playback vs forcing 1080p or similar.

Can't speak for iPhone, but on iPad, I've moved to using the website which goes goes to 1080p immediately.

still have to download it, to see it an acceptable quality

Downloaded content do contain a whole lot more compression than streaming at max phone supported quality, so just a tiny FYI.

One thing that has stood out to me is that when I have two Edge windows open, for example and I switch to the last used window from Safari, both windows overlap instead of just the one window I was working with.

If there's a home developed alternative, it is significantly more likely to experience outages than Google's offering, given how terrible gov. services are in the country.

Wanna withdraw money from a Post Office? Be prepared to return back empty-handed because "Link down" or gov. employees watching cricket matches.
