The crash is absolutely rational; the cascading effect highlights the missing moat for companies like OpenAI. Without a moat, no investor will provide these companies with the billions that fueled most of the demand. This demand was essential for NVIDIA to squeeze such companies with incredible profit margins.

NVIDIA was overvalued before, and this correction is entirely justified. The larger impact of DeepSeek is more challenging to grasp. While companies like Google and Meta could benefit in the long term from this development, they still overpaid for an excessive number of GPUs. The rise in their stock prices was assumed to be driven by the moat they were expected to develop themselves.

I was always skeptical of those valuations. LLM inference was highly likely to become commoditized in the future anyway.

Lisp is one of the oldest programming languages developed in the 1960, it came before and is very elegant actually. You can write incredibly powerful things with this pattern and it's also really simple to build an interpreter for it with the stuff they had at their disposal at the time.

You are totally right, the whole statement is ironically antisemitism here on Hacker News: Facebook/Mark Zuckerberg and Israel.... what is the connection. It's clear the poster is on X/Twitter and you can see what Elons behaviour perpetuates.

Elon Musk doesn't know how the advertising business works, get's rid of moderation and let's banned people back. Which obviously leads to an increase of antisemitism on Twitter and the ADL justly fights against it.

Now after the lawsuit this guy thinks: Elon is a genius, it must be the jews who control the media who have prejudices against Elon and his management.

If it is a medium of exchange, all the attention never made a lot of sense.

The use cases are niche; that's the thing. Venezuelans who avoid inflation and ordering illegal drugs are not a trillion-dollar business. All the legal/regulated areas mean competing with existing financial infrastructure, which is low margin and incredibly competitive.

So if you see the space as a whole, it never had the potential market to begin with to justify those valuations. It was fuelled by low-interest rates, speculators, and venture capital. It was, in retrospect, simply a bubble, and some people feared missing out after some became insanely rich with it.

Historically speaking it was nothing special: Tulips, new economy, real estate and now it was crypo.

When you are in it, invested people always tell you why it is different this time. The underlying economics stay the same; value creation is usually incremental and hard.

The early stage of Theranos wasn't really a scam, they tried to build the actual product. The scam started when they failed to do so and then lied about it.

They are competing with Google, Amazon and Microsoft. Those are not normal companies.

I also think that people underestimate that this space will get very low margin eventually and become even more commoditized. Most companies totally overpaid for IT enterprise solutions the last decades, they are sales driven and live off lock in effects of their hardware to milk their customers.

Now we got rid of physical hardware then it will take companies another 10 years to figure out that they also don't need 90% of all the cloud solutions they got sold on. The rest you can run everywhere cloud neutral with kubernetes or something else.

Will those three companies earn a trillion dollars during that process? Sure.

I absolutely agree with the killer application part, even for business applications they still don't have any idea.

On their website you have a video that displays several use cases that don't make sense if you really think about them.

Just to dissect the first example where doctors look at a low resolution brain over a surgery table. I don't know why there is a woman without a device who thinks: "why are those three people looking over me here?". But I think the association is some kind of neurosurgery.

* Neurosurgeons know how a brain looks like inside, that's anatomy.

* If this depicts the CT or MRT of the woman, those are evaluated on high resolutions displays by radiologists.

* It's difficult to keep those devices sterile in a hospital environment.

Let's extend this into surgery. "Hey cool you can look inside the brain in real time". Why would a display not be enough in any other case?

* Doctors don't wear a heavy device with a limited field of view during a 5h surgery.

* There are devices with a high resolution display, that can show you in real time where you are inside the brain. I tried this device once with a melon, I could make the mental transition within a minute. Now imagine a neurosurgeon with all his skill.

* What if there is a problem with the image. Right now the doctor can look from the display inside the real brain and check if something is off. You can't take the unobstructed view from a doctor here.

The other two examples in the video are not much more convincing. The second one is solved by a warehouse navigation device. Maybe the last one, but a car showroom usually has a real car you can drive.... Even without it a VR Headset would solve the same issue. Why do they have to see their surroundings?

After so many years and that much money, that's the best they came up with?

I used the one from Microsoft in a museum, that could in theory be interesting. Make it more interactive. You had to stand at an exact position, it couldn't interact with its surroundings and my nose hurt because it was so heavy. I think the battery was empty after 15 minutes.

Just the complexity building a fully interactive museum, all the 3D artists and programmers that would take. What else you could improve with those resources to enhance the experience?

Only reform Jews in America and they require jewish upbringing. I would recommend sillysaurusx going trough the conversion process at your reform Synagogue. (Reform is mostly about knowledge, basically classes). It’s there for a reason, you learn a lot if you didn‘t have an upbringing.

Vision Fund 1 from Softbank is at the end of it's lifecycle, now they still try to raise for Vision Fund 2. You spend much more in the early phases of a fund, so it's big enough to make all the difference here.

Right now Bolivia only has huge reserves. You also have to be able to extract it efficiently.

Look at Venezuela, their reserves are huge but their oil is much more difficult to extract.

Also the lithium market is complex, there are many different grades. The impact of raw lithium price on battery prices are just ~30%.

So the current political situation has probably no effect at all.

I think the situation with TypeScript is a little different. JavaScript is a very powerful language and you can do a lot of "hacky" things with it. It feels to me like most new features are an improvement, I use :any very rarely now and can model almost everything with it.

I you would design TypeScript from scratch, you might have a point.

I mean for software we talk about reproducability and versions down to the bit. But if a consumer products replaces one piece of metal with plastic it's apparently the same product?

Products should have versions that look like this.

I mean this opens a huge box of problems, I know apple didn't want to admit their keyboard was problematic in fear of lawsuits. This is how it should be.

The standard could have fallback field, where you just put your UTF-8 string in there and then the system knows it's something that doesn't fit in all the other categories.

Better than not trying at least, the current situation just sucks.

My official full name is too long, I just have a second and a third first name with are all not so short. This is not uncommon here in Germany and therefore usually not a problem. But a lot of foreign IT systems where it says "put it exactly like in your official document" it doesn't work or it cuts it of. Witch made my third name once "Al". It also happened that it took my second name as my last name....

The German state isn't much better with foreign names. I have a lot of friends who are from eastern europe. Everybody has a weird story about how their current passport name came about.

Why isn't there some ISO name parsing standard that can understand a weird title of a prince of a city state and give you an appropriate output of it?

Our globally connected society didn't figure out how to deal with names yet. Weird if you think about it.

Just a hypothesis I thought of:

A lot of cancer cells are developed because of constant background radiation, if you get older you just were exposed to more of it.

Elephants have a much higher volume to be affected by it, so just from an evolutionary perspective they had to develop a better resistance. The ones who got cancer early couldn't reproduce as well.

Does that make sense? Or does the article say exactly that?

I think the concept also works with displaced water, those hydrophobic surfaces create air containers that make the whole thing lighter.

But why so complicated? A 10cm metal hull seems much safer than a 5mm opening with hydrophobic coating.

Also with a chamber system ship's can be made pretty robust and almost unsinkable.

You don't know exactly how much they have to do with it, they could just be a symptom and a scapegoat.

AirBnB has about 10 Billion in gross bookings (fees are about a quarter) worldwide now, so when they started out it was less. Real estate values have risen in the trillions since the financial crisis and the low interest policy.

The money from AirBnB goes mostly to renters, the ones who didn't benefit from those value increases. Also some of the money went to higher prices in the Hotel industry, who faces more competition now.

So I think it's much more complicated with AirBnB.

Exactly those are the ones who could legitimately use it, without driving rents. That is the original idea for AirBnB anyhow.

Why not put a limit for 30 Days in the Regulation for when you are not home? It would be easy for AirBnB to limit and it would not be economical for commercial offerings.

Prediction: Bitcoin will crash together with a general financial crisis / recession.

People hold their bitcoin, because they don't know where else to put it right now. With low interest rates everybody is apparently doing well.

If the market crashes, some people are worried, or have some assets outside of bitcoin which they have to offset.

They will start to dump their bitcoin, but where is lower bound? There are no hard assets backing it like a stock.

Maybe it's a few "believers", "whales" and exchanges who value bitcoin no matter what. But what is their total buying power? If there is a strong devaluation, those people or companies would be the ones who were hit the hardest, so how much can they afford to put aside for preppin up Bitcoin?
