I think many people from the Global South would agree with you and not just Africans. That was also exactly my thought when i read the headline, even though he did nothing against my native Kenya. Also, the phrase "Third World" isn't the most appropriate one to describe a good chunk of the world.

Amharic isn't the only Semitic language spoken in Ethiopia. We have other Semitic languages spoken both in Ethiopia and Eritrea. It is just the Red Sea that divides these two countries from the other Semitic speaking countries. Yemen, across the sea has other Semitic languages other than Arabic. Also, just like Indo-European is a large grouping of languages, the Semitic languages are ordinarily grouped under Afro-Asiatic languages. Thus, besides some of the Semitic languages spoken in Ethiopia and Eritrea, we also have two other subgroups of Afro-Asiatic namely, Cushitic and Omotic languages that are also spoken in Ethiopia. Amharic thus is well contextualised for Ethiopia.

Similarly, I can no longer browse HN on a Firefox browser on Android. I am not really sure what exact settings changed. This started a few weeks ago.

Winget is a new thing in Windows one could use though sometimes it has issues.

A different pet peeve of mine on iOS is the USSD menu which is center-aligned, and i find that very ugly. Maybe the usage of this menu isn't universal but for someone from a developing country, we use that like a million times a day. Mostly we are choosing a menu item to continue with a dialogue and the numbers are not aligned.

Checked MySQL and i see almost everyone pronounces it as My Sequel. Well, with the exception of Marten Mickos, who was the CEO of MySQL before same was acquired by Sun Microsystems. I guess, this would be another tomato, tomahto.

Samsung has now decided that for me to use the camera on my Android phone, i must give full permission to something called Nearby Devices. Thankfully, i can live without the camera but for the first time, i mulling over moving to Apple.

Sometimes this doesn't work like what happens on the desktop with Google, for example. English is my default language, and in country where English is also the official language but Google in its wisdom, decided that the default for google.com is Swahili. Yet, I don't know of anyone that uses Swahili as his default langauge on digital devices. Microsoft too. Every once in a while they would send me text messages in cryptic Swahili that I have never bothered to find out what it means.

I saw Kenyan police use it on a bus I was in. At the time, I didn't think much about it for being asked to alight the bus and be searched was already an inconvenience for. Not shocked that the Kenyan government was duped. I am certain some top officials also made their killing off of this probably even getting them at a price a multiple of the quoted 60k. Fraud and corruption work together very well.

Firefox has been my primary browser for years now. I mostly use Chrome for Gmail and other Google services. Typing this from a Firefox browser on Android. I also mostly use a small screen laptop that has a huge collection of bookmarks (I am not even sure I will come to read all of them). These bookmarks now overflow the screen due to increased spacing between them. On Firefox 90, I could disable Proton ui settings. These are no longer possible in Firefox 91. While it is a very small annoyance, the overflown bookmarks irk me so much that I am now contemplating moving to Chrome for good. Privacy be damned. Well, at least for me.

Yes for me it is. I exclusively use a non chromium based browser with some extensions installed and always logged off Google.

Turkey seem to be slowly replacing China in some parts of Africa - well, at least in Kenya and Somalia - as the source of most non-electronics merchandise sold from clothing to furniture. This is just from my observation with no proper sampling done. It also seem to be replacing India as a destination of affordable quality healthcare though at a much slower pace per my observation and mostly among Somalis not so much among Kenyans.

5km per hour is easily doable, I believe. A group of us in high school once did that and covered about 105kms in 3 days. We walked just about 7 hours every day for those 3 days.

Based on the first four comments, I see some do not appreciate this unlike me, at least. Just last-night, I was forced to download a zipped folder with source code from a site I was new to. Well, I did appreciate using this new feature because I wasn't sure what I of the 'trustworthiness' of the folder.

I speak both Swahili and Somali. While the two languages are written in Latin alphabet, I find Somali harder than Swahili. Yet, Somali is supposed to be my mother tongue. Thus, this grouping in many ways reflects ny experience too.

I also type elsewhere and copy paste to Whatsapp anytime I am writing something longer than a couple lines. I have also disabled the last seen feature. The currently online status seem way worse than last seen and can't be disabled.

Indeed Ethiopia is close to the equator - just slightly to the north of the equator. We use the same convention in most of East Africa. In Swahili, which is spoken in Tanzania, Kenya, etc, you begin counting the hours from daybreak up to dusk which is around 12 and then start over from just before till dawn again. Surprisingly, in Somalia, this convention is used in the southern parts that were colonised by Italy. In the north, noon is 12p.
