Hmm, not sure what you mean. The consumer cards from AMD and Nvidia are still gaming-first, and games utilize new features like ray-tracing and DSS. Speaking as a lifelong PC gamer and current Twitch addict, the industry still seems very healthy.

Agree with these points, but at 1.5 I'd insert: intimate knowledge of the maps. "Holding angles" is such a profound advantage, and requires knowing the maps inside-and-out.

Super interesting to read everyone's opinions about C&P. I too was force-fed lots of classics in school, and practically always resorted to CliffsNotes. For whatever reason, C&P struck such a chord with me, I "couldn't put it down", won a scholarship writing about it, and got to skip a bunch of Lit classes in college :)

Check out Firefox if you need a cross-platform browser that syncs passwords, etc. I use Windows, macOS, Linux, and iOS, and I've found Firefox to be my best option.
I feel ya. My RPi does indeed have a case, with a fan. The backups are offloaded to an external HDD.

I've been trying out Linux distros since the late 90s. I recognize Mint's reputation as a Windows alternative for Linux noobs. But it's honestly the best OS I've used on any platform since... Snow Leopard? With Cinnamon anyway (the default), it's polished, fast, and has a perfect set of default apps for what I need to do.
Set and setting are enormously important when taking anything, even alcohol or caffeine. If you're in a bad mood or uncomfortable space, drugs will probably make it worse.
deno's built-in test runner is also a big selling point for me, and Node.js 20 is declaring theirs (node:test) to be stable.
The end of the article made me wonder: are museums insured for theft? Maybe they could offer safe deposit boxes :)
RIP. Creative is a brand I'll love forever, having come into PC gaming in the 90's (Sound Blaster). My desktop speakers are still Creative.

I'm a big fan of Gnumeric for all my personal stuff. It's not as feature-rich as Excel, but does everything I need, and is fast and focused.
I'd have to add Pi-hole to this list. Anytime I browse the web on another network, I'm reminded just how much crippling ad garbage it's sparing me.

Re: appreciation, yes. The Great Lakes are unique and amazing. The more you travel, the more you realize it. I love hearing from people who visited the Great Lakes and were like: I can't see land on the horizon! This is an ocean! But also, no jellyfish +1
Allowing oneself to be bored, or at least idle, without self-judgement, can be extremely valuable. You're likely processing things in the background (often without realizing it), which will make your active decisions and activities easier.
I have the same concern. As long as they're shipped as a search option for every major browser, even on mobile, I have hope.

I'm so fascinated by the idea of self-hosting email, but /every/ time I see it come up on HN, someone asserts there be dragons, followed by lots of agreement. Maybe I'll try it on a toy domain anyway.
I was almost 30 when I had my first ever panic attack. I was alone and convinced it was a heart attack, called 911, and felt fine by the time the ambulance reached the hospital. Embarrassed, I was ready to brush it off, but instead saw a therapist for the first time. She took out a stopwatch and had me breathe through a narrow straw. Within seconds, my face and limbs went completely numb; I couldn't move, and was amazed that I could form words. I sat with my head in my hands for what felt like forever. Eventually it passed, I felt utterly exhausted, and she asked what I thought the stopwatch said. "I dunno, 10-15 minutes?" Nope, 90 seconds. That experience made me start taking my mental health seriously.
Can anyone elaborate on how JetBrains was involved? I don't have access to the whole article, and results from my searches are ambiguous.
