I’m a new Ruby user. Been a dev for more than a decade and I picked it up for various things over the last year or two. These were not legacy projects, this was purely my curiosity to explore new tools. Have really enjoyed it!
Tangential question: is it common for frameworks to use the same name as a package from another framework? I had never heard of Django LiveView, but have used Phoenix’s Liveview and assumed that’s what it was. Not sure if I like that? I.e. does it imply some sort of endorsement or partnership? I do like that Laravel went with Livewire to distinguish it.

I believe UFOs are mostly an op to intimidate foreign governments, i.e. US trying to say to China “hey we got some stuff you’ve never heard seen” so as to introduce uncertainty into their war games. They aren’t to demonstrate power; they are to introduce a mix of confusion and intimidation. I’m also not saying that all the reports are fake: i believe most of the witness and testimony are being honest. But just because you’re being honest doesn’t mean what you saw or were told are not the cogs of an intelligence operation.
That keyboard layout is a great analogy. Maybe I would have tried Helix in my early twenties, but I’m too old for that now (30s lol).
I have a huge disdain for artists who do not bleed and sweat like the rest of us doing jobs we don’t necessarily enjoy. Especially in this age of opulence. Welcome to life. Art should capture truth, the essence of things, and how can you do so without your feet planted firmly on the ground? Perhaps I could make exceptions for those on whom skill is truly refined in a dedicated way (think YoYo Ma practicing 10 hours a day), but I suspect your avg artist spends more time navel gazing than putting in the work. (And I say this as a huge supporter and fan of the arts)
Can you expand on this? Was your site pretty static or did it have a lot of interactivity? What were the best things you observed in Astro vs Laravel?

This is great! Hat tip to PHP. I first came across pipes in Elixir and have ever since missed it in every other language. Two observations:
- pipes make you realize how much song and dance you do for something quite simple. Nesting, interstitial variables, etc all obscuring what is in effect and very orderly set of operations.
- pipes really do have to be a first class operator of the language. I’ve tried using some pipe-like syntactic sugar in languages without pipes and while it does the job, a lot of elegance and simplicity is lost. It feels like you are using a roundabout thing and thus, in the end, doesn’t really achieve the same level of simplicity. Things can get very deranged if you are using a language in a way it wasn’t designed for and even though I love pipes I’ve seen “fake pipes” make things more complicated in languages without them.

His in ring performance will always give me goosebumps, every time. I’ve seen him start puffing his cheeks, shaking his head, no-selling punches, and finger pointing a million and every…single…time it gets me excited and pumped. And all for a silly leg drop at the end. Goes to show that the story can communicate so much more than the moves.

I did the same thing recently, excluding quotes from books. Every other note, How To, and To Do gone. It provided tremendous relief. The vast majority of the stuff may as well have been written by a complete stranger. But, again, I kept my book quotes and notes as that is something I reference regularly. I guess the main thing was the realization that I literally don’t access 90% of my notes and they were of no value other than making me feel something about myself.

Wouldnt it be nice is such an amazing piece of art. Grew up hearing it, never listening to the lyrics. Thought it was fun. As an adult finally paid attention to the lyrics one day and they knocked me off my feet. The happiest most upbeat song is really singing about something not quite there, an ideal, but real, something to be grasped and lost…or let go…
What a genius to be able to pull that song off.
I loved his shows when I was a kid. I was pretty into magic (e.g. going to the local shop and buying tricks) and this show was the most exciting thing I had ever seen. I get that it broke many rules, but I think it was well timed. If it had been earlier I think it would have been a true rule-breaking, “we’re exposing secrets cuz we just don’t care” type of thing. But in the 90s/00s it was a moment in which a new generation of TV kids. Whenever I would watch magic on TV I thought it was pretty lame because, after all, how do you know it was just special effects BS? This guy revealed that even though it was on TV it was still an execution of skill/engineering/performance. Super fascinating. Thanks Val!

For whatever reason that turn of phrase seems very amateur/lazy coming from the Economist.
Haven’t read Dickens, but Melville was a revelation for me. His short stories are great, but Moby Dick is a work of glory. It’s hard to explain why, but Moby Dick basically bifurcated my life: there was the time before I read it and the time after. That being said, I would have hated it in high school and am glad it wasn’t assigned. It was something I could only appreciate in my 30s.

Interesting! I use a budgeting app that has curious loading screens when you first log in. Sometimes it flies by, sometimes it takes a bit. It doesn’t appear to be related to data import, as data isn’t in sync when you log in. I wonder if what I’m seeing is a tenant migration technique like you describe.

I can't help but read this in a baritone blustering-with-spittle transatlantic voice.

Obligatory comment: Moby Dick is a work of stunning glory and if you think you can abridge it you are missing the entire point.
Singing in adult choirs has been one of my most spiritually and socially rewarding activities. You really feel a brother in arms with your fellow singers. Perhaps it is because singing is such an embarrassing activity in isolation, but then the sheer force of all the voices come together to make something of such power and beauty that you are incapable of replicating yourself. I’ll never forget the tenors I sang Faures Requiem or Beethoven 9th with.
That’s a fascinating take. Music until very recently was indeed an incredibly social activity bound with layers of talent, leisure (purpose/meaning/security), belonging, etc.
As people have been chatting about the Metaverse or AR I often quip that we’ve already had AR for awhile: headphones.
The ubiquitous of AirPods, even amongst employees on the clock in recent years, has only reinforced my belief that we are already deep down the AR rabbit hole and seeing both the positive and negative effects. Augmented reality is great, but we still need to be grounded and able to act within reality. It’s the reality that must be our base, not the augmented part. The augmented should serve to improve reality, not replace.
