Hi spearman.
Sounds promising! Is this link broken? https://astera.org/obelisk/
Nature's 'Scientific Reports' journal does indeed have a different editorial priority than other journals. The peer reviewers are instructed to evaluate scientific validity, not their own idea of importance. This is seen as advantageous by many scientists, who perhaps want to avoid getting stuck in the dice-roll crapshoot of peer review politics.
It seems like an incorrect mischaracterization to say they are all fatally flawed throwaway papers, no?
It's a commonly used journal, and a reasonable impact factor of 4. It's not like this is a predatory journal or a complete bullshit journal.
Do you have more information on why you don't like SR?
Billion has meant 10^9 in both the US and the UK in most common usage since the 1970s. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_and_short_scales#cite_not...
There is no modern British definition that is different from the US definition.
Even today no industrial country is even close to having even all its energy from solar and wind
There are reports that Scotland has been generating 200% of household energy needs from wind alone in 2019. That sounds close to me. Here is a news report, and wiki: https://www.cnbc.com/2019/07/15/scotland-has-produced-enough...
The 'Netatmo' home weather stations record CO2 level. Mine shares over wifi. I get around 400ppm with windows open for a while, or 1200ppm with windows closed.
I don't know what the calibration mechanism is, nor the specificity.
It's around $100 on Amazon - https://www.amazon.com/Netatmo-Weather-Station-for-Smartphon...
Do you really think Google search trends are indicitive of "recent trends" on political leanings on regulation?
If so, you might be interested to see that there is appears to actually be a relative swing toward regulation: https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&geo=US&q=r...
You can't sum the marginal rate to get the 'effective rate'.
The effective rate of income tax in the UK is closer 37%, not 60%, at an income of £121k. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Percentage_IT_and_NI_and_...
Or "a traffic light typically only uses only 1/3 of its lights at a time?".
Ok cool.
But how is it that you are managing to connect via SSH? When connected over wifi, it seems that only port 53 is open on the Gear S3, and it doesn't accept SSH. And I don't know the user name nor password. And I don't see a way to open a terminal on the watch.
Googling doesn't seem to help.
Interesting. I had assumed Tizen was a greatly reduced Linux-inspired OS. Do you have a source for the ability to SSH?
Might it not be easier to have an Android app that grabs data from the watch using their API?

In case anyone is doing anything in Matlab and is considering macOS Sierra, watch out this incompatibility with some non-US locales:

You are clearly not representative of the target market. If preference were tested, I'm sure the vast majority of readers prefer more recent sites to that old style.
A dominant news site has an obligation to try to look good to it's readers.
What do you mean impossible on mobile? I've been listening to this on a Nexus 5 for 30 mins. It played straight away on Chrome. Continues playing in background tab right now.
Why would you expect there to be medical evidence that speaks to being happier after giving up reading news?
I don't think you are entitled to expect that. Medical studies don't tend to focus on the happiness of healthy people. Even if they did, I would be surprised if a good study giving us data on happiness on reading news already exist at a scale that would represent the range of population behaviour.
I don't disagree with you wanting good scientific evidence - that's commendable.
I disagree with calling baloney on a sensible hypothesis ('reading news as a typical Westerner does is detrimental to overall happiness for most people') just because that scientific evidence does not yet exist and this opinion piece does not yet provide it.
Bias alert: I'm pretty sure I read to much news, and am solidifying this meme in my mind to try to improve that.
Annoying meta-pedant note: You presumably mean that witch hunts mainly occurred in puritanical areas, at a time in which the Renaissance was occurring elsewhere in the world.
I doubt her anger is completely feigned.
Even if it were, the job of a politician in a democracy is to represent the interests of their people.
Anger here is better than not talking about it.
Looks interesting.
I don't see a prominent link to a full pdf version of the draft of the website.
Any reason why not?
Ha - I agree that that procedure seems preposterous. I have seen it listed in several forums, and only considered it after several others had reported success. I figured it didn't cost much to empirically give it a go. I present weak evidence that it appears it may have helped for me.
For what its worth, I am doubtful. There did appear to be some subjective improvement in responsiveness, but I didn't benchmark it. It is not the Calculator app in itself that functions as this, I had originally read any stock Apple app would do it.
Software reset does fix this for some, so I don't think that some button state polling problem relating to software is inconceivable. Possible, but unlikely.
More info here - they acknowledge it is likely bs. http://lifehacker.com/5909709/recalibrate-your-idevice-home-...
I had also have a slightly unresponsive home button, on an iPhone 4.
Try running the Apple Calc app, then hold the power button until the 'slide to power off' prompt appears and then let go and hold the home button gently until the calculator app force-closes.
A previous reddit thread advised that procedure, apparently to trigger some 'recalibration'. It's possible it's placebo effect, but it appears to have slightly helped for my home button. http://www.redmondpie.com/how-to-recalibrate-iphone-home-but...
UK readers:
You might want to register your opposition with the BBC here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/complaints/complain-online/
Takes less than 3 min.
Perhaps not exactly what you are looking for, but Prof David Mackay (also of Information Theory, Inference, and Learning Algorithms) has a cogent quantitative analysis of energy generation, given climate concerns.
I think it's a good read. You can tell he has awareness of the relevant numbers - and doesn't like bull.

Do you have any proof that Strong AI would be safe for humans?
> "In every time, in every place, the deeds of men remain the same."
Citation needed. I'm pretty sure there are fewer war deaths and fewer kittens burned for entertainment per head now than 200 years ago.
I'm not typically one to have artistic considerations ahead of business, but...
It hurt to know that one of the leads from the sci-fi strategy epic 'Alpha Centauri' was working at the place that made Farmville - a known sucker-magnet. It must have been soul-destroying.
Good luck to him.
France is a democracy. Traffic accidents are a main cause of death. Self-driving cars appear to be safer already.
Let's make it an issue and make government change.
What do you mean by 'broken'? Can you point to an example image?
I'm glad that works for you.
I imagine melatonin works better with minimal exposure to blue light after taking it. This might be good for those who have it harder time with sleep schedules than you do.
Plus melatonin and modafinil.
Haven't pilots have used this stuff for years?
Presumably going to Mars is particularly bad, but actually going to freaking Mars probably helps a little with the depression.
Is that tongue-in-cheek? Of course they can boil a kettle.
It does take ages, though.
Conventional kettles seemed to take perhaps twice as long to boil in CA than in UK. Boiling water at 230V,13A in the UK is going to be much faster than 120V,15A in the US.
