To be a little crude, and in my opinion, what you are basically saying is that you are glad that the choice and autonomy of other people unrelated to you is restricted so that your vision of what the world should look like can be realized.

Autonomy over my work and how I solve problems. Not having to deal with the customer directly or provide support. Few meetings and business waste. Quiet working conditions with few interruptions.

I try to get up every 1-2 hours and walk around and do some exercises when I'm on a long-haul flight. I'm that weird guy doing squats and other exercises at the back of the plane. If there is no room outside I use a bathroom. I also drink a lot of water, which causes me to get up anyway because I have to go to the bathroom more often.

If I'm insanely fortunate I will have 100 reasonably healthy years on this planet. Spending 3-4% of my life at any one company is a lot if you ask me, no matter how much I like it there. The bottom line for a lot of people on HN is that they don't have to if they don't want to. And like you say, most companies are not SpaceX. While you can certainly still grow and crush it after 2-3 years, chances are that you can grow and crush it that much more if you uproot and start over somewhere else.

Maybe this won't be a popular response, but what we do know is that Facebook couldn't give a single fuck about your privacy or protecting your private information. (Insofar as they "care" it is to protect their own interests.) It is prudent to assume and expect that they will exploit you in any way possible. So if you are so concerned, why are you even on Facebook?

I second this, and have used it for years with caffeine for this exact reason. By itself it also has an anti-anxiolytic and calming effect, and has been used to treat ADHD as well.

If you want to try it out, make sure you get Suntheanine. A dose that works for many is twice the theanine than caffeine, but YMMV.

Private monopolies are largely unproblematic as they will be destroyed by more effective competitors eventually. I'm way more afraid of government monopoly. Point in case: The protectionism and government interference that has kept the taxi business shitty for so long.

Yes, it's brutal, and a bit ruthless, but effective.

I'm not saying that people who don't work out should not be let go, and I'm certainly not saying that you "owe" people anything. It's a business and not a charity. (Just remember that this goes the other way as well; people who show loyalty to some company are doing themselves a great disservice, in my opinion. I work for money. I'm passionate and will do great work, but I'm a mercenary.)

That being said, I would be very hesitant to go work at a place known to err on the side of just hiring someone and kicking them to the curb if it doesn't work out. Why? Because it can say a great deal about the management at that company, and how they will treat me. I also have no interest in being hired unless you are confident that I'm a great fit. I don't want anyone to take a chance on me. I want people to be delighted to hire me over someone else.

However, based on your other answers about what you do, it's unlikely that this current $200K salary is sustainable. Your company can easily replace what you do with a local developer for less than $200K. They are actually doing the right thing by giving you the option to stay and move to the US.

This is the most important thing to consider here, in my opinion. So OP, answer this: You're fired from the company tomorrow, and you're out looking for a job again. Where would you rather be? Which market would you prefer to sell your services to? You're already making a killing, and you will continue to make a killing after moving to the US. What happens after this gig is what's important here. This is potentially a rest-of-your-life decision. You can always move back to India.

I lean towards merging as is and fixing afterwards. Or doing a manual merge locally, fix whatever needs to be fixed, and then push to master. There is just something about changing other people's commits that doesn't sit well with me. But maybe there is something about the author/committer feature of Git and how it's intended to be used that I'm not understanding.

If you don't mind me asking, what kind of programming tasks were they asked to solve?
