Most of the focus has been on Tax fraud, and terrorist funding from arts stolen in Syria, but I would like the Swiss Customs to evaluate arts from 3rd world countries, especially Africa and south america.

Hum .. don't think so. Not quite yet at least. Underneath this, there is Finagle on top of which most services at Twitter is built on. It offers a java API, but remains a Scala library. And there's still a lot of existing code inside to twitter to ditch Scala right away. Java 8 is awesome, but Java is still not an FP language.

Avro is Row oriented like said before, you should see it ine the categories of Thrift, Protobuf. Albeit a lot better in flexibility. But he gist of it is that it's a Serialization format for than a storage format, which Parquet is. Usually, when using Kafka or the confluent platform, I'd use Avro, and for long term storage and analytics Avro isn't really suited. Instead use Parquet or ORC if you're using Hive. With things like Spark, Impala or Presto, aggregations queries for ad hoc analytics are an order of magnitude more efficient and faste with Parquet than with Avro.

Interesting, we're doing similar things with Spark, Cassandra and Mesos. By scaling out Mesos with spot instances for its agents.

CockroachDB is closer to Spanner. The globally distributed primitives that power their SQL layer which is F1. I guess that TiDB is on layer above Cockroach.

This looks a lot like Mesos. But of course they will never admit that. Amazon and open source, a long history.

We are using Mesos/Marathon/Chronos/Docker/Bamboo on 200+ nodes on Google compute. Both for Data processing workloads and web applications (intensives advertising real time bidding servers). Using Mesosphere Packages, Salt, it was quite easy. Of course some services and some ssl stuff were a bit hairy but it's been working very great. Now I'm waiting for the availability of Mesosphere DCOS to come to GCP. Tried it on AWS and, god it's awesome. Makes spinning services like a breeze and deploying new product instantly.

what's your issue with Zk. It might be overweight but so far in ourdeployments it behaves a lot better than etcd. But if you're interested there's a lot being done with etcd and consul. I haven't seen etcd handling the kind of mixed data-web services that zookeeper was built for.
