+1 - I am also very interested why they chose to switch out from CloudFlare for both their DNS and their CDN and over to Fastly. Nick Craver did a write up where they specifically mentioned [1] Cloudflare for both their DNS and CDN.

I would guess that this is rolling out just for the PR, the sheer number of trains needed to replace one decent sized container ship just makes this all prohibitive to ever replace much sea freight plus launching when there is a glut of container ships floating around as well, which is keeping the price lower than most ship owners can breakeven. Ok so it's quicker, but it's not that quick.

The only winners would be the goods owners who are winning form short term lower prices - is that enough for a long term business?

Yes for sure, think about what Google etc had as teams before they all launched their cloud compute services, I would bet they all had abuse mitigation teams. In this case I would figure there is an overlap of the team and tooling that keeps google.com up and the one that keeps my VM being hosed by a DDoS

We used them to secure internal only apps we ran, to stop staff getting used to ignoring the warning pages if the certs are self-signed. Yer ok the signup process is a pain but we had an amazing system admin who knew their stuff so got up and running in no time.

I am in Shanghai and CloudFlare seems to suffer from rolling blocks mostly against SSL content. We notice as we have a ecommerce site behind their service, our customer are in the EU so no bother really just a pain sometime to get their orders out... connections to Google in almost all forms is basically dead now. Weirdly I don't remember HackerNews getting blocked and thats on CF too???

It's CloudFlare the firewall seems to be blocking sometimes, I am in Shanghai and HN comes and goes at random. Plus I notice the same thing on other CF sites. China is a pain for almost all CDNs

Watch for a drop in China traffic, HTTPS Wikipedia is blocked but HTTP is not.
