Tyk ran a fund back in March where they would give micro-grants to people working on side projects. They've decided to do it again and applications are open until December 20th

Retro brings back the magic of having full control over your music––inspired by the design of the iPod. Why would we want that? I don’t know, but nostalgia hits us hard at the weirdest of times and sometimes there’s harmony in it.

We’ve been spoiled with Spotify/Apple Music. Being able to have all your songs in one place is a godsend and is something we take for granted every day. I don’t want to take that away and currently you can control/sync Apple Music with Retro.

You can theme the app to really make it yours. Right now I’ve made a few skins that you can select within the app (as seen in the video). You can also change the wheel color.

Yep, mainly just posted here for exposure/validation before I spent more time reaching out to grants & organizations, etc.

Hopefully in the near future! I'd definitely like to have funders outside of the US on the platform––in fact quite a few of the smaller grants I've been in touch with do support international applicants.

Yep you're right––I probably should've specified this. I think larger/gov't-operated grants probably won't use this, but I'm hoping smaller and private funders like you suggested would be the way to go

So a couple weeks ago, I posted a collection of different grants/funding opportunities with deadlines and all that (https://github.com/sakofchit/fund-my-project).

But as I was going through all these different grants/funding opportunities, I’ve realized that a lot of them ask similar, if not the same questions.

So I wanted to build a platform that simplifies the process of applying to grants and funding opportunities. Rather than having to apply to each grant/opportunity individually, you could apply with just one application. In order for this to work, there would need to be individual funders/grants registered on the site. (There are no funders at the moment, but I’m optimistic)

Searching for grants the fit your niche can be tough, and I genuinely think that this could help with the discoverability of various grants as well.

I think most grants have their own form that you have to fill out so it would depend on the grant/funder.

Yeah you're right. 'project' is subjective :). This is just a start for now, but I'm open to PR's that includes other types of funding

Someone suggested that there should be a place that documents a list of grants + deadlines in my last post, so I’ve gone ahead and put together a list of grants, crowdfunding platforms, and other resources that can help you get off the ground with no upfront costs!

If you know of other grants or resources, please feel free to create a pull request :)

So basically they don't actually give you the $500 directly (which is probably for the better), but they'll be paying for any services that you need to get your project off the ground + provide guidance. You'd have to apply via their website, and they'll reach out to you--do a quick interview and if they like what they see they'll back your side project.

I’ve been working on https://side.to which is a marketplace for selling side projects and unused/inactive domains for the past few months now. This started off as an alternative to Flippa but for smaller projects. It’s currently in public beta (so it’s not 100% perfect just yet). There’s no BS: no listing fees, no fees to unlock access to important features, etc.

Listings are manually reviewed for quality assurance.

I’m also aware that there are other platforms out there that do what we’re trying to do but I’ve disagreed with how they execute it. I don’t believe in having an upfront cost to list a project in addition to high success fees and I also don’t agree with requiring users to pay to unlock certain features before they can actually make a sale. It just poses a high risk of losing money in the case that the project doesn’t sell. With our platform, there’s no upfront costs posing no risks to sellers.

Keep in mind that what is being sold on our site are side projects and unused/inactive domains, so we currently have a price cap at $2000 and $100 respectively.

I thought I’d take a moment and share how we’ve amassed over 10k users and over 50k page views in the span of 4 months without spending a penny!

It’s been quite the adventure, but I strongly feel that marketing your product is something anyone can do if you use the right tools and if you’re willing to invest your time instead of money :)

Feedback is imperative and we wanted to put a spin on how it’s delivered to make it much more meaningful. We’re starting a new series where we interview people in our community that post their side projects on our website (https://sideprojects.net).

You may remember this from a little while ago. When I launched SideProjects v1.0 a few months ago, the goal was really just to help users increase the discoverability of their side projects whilst building a community simultaneously. I didn’t incline to do too much with it. It was fine as a link-sharing site, but as with all side projects, there was room for improvement.

Soon after launching, Donji, (who runs a podcast with Taher called My Side Project which is about people who took their side projects to the next level) reached out to me, and ever since we’ve been working on redesigning and rebuilding SideProjects. Now we’re a team of 3

We’ve been beta testing v2 publicly with our community for the past 2 weeks and today we’re finally excited to launch it!

Whats new in v2?

* Reposting! What we’ve learned from our community is that Side Projects are always able to be improved upon. We added a little thing that allows you to repost your side project every 7 days, so long as your side project has undergone significant updates.

* Discussion Module: With the podcast, we really want our community to be involved with everything we do. We’re currently using this module to source questions from the community to ask interviewees on our podcast. We’re also doing a 15-minute, fast-paced video interviews. More on that very soon!

* In an effort to increase post engagement, upon clicking on a project’s title, you will now be taken to the post itself instead of the actual product. Direct links to the project are now placed below the title. This change also addresses the URL encoding issue FireFox users had been encountering.

* Dark-Mode! Some people prefer dark-mode while others prefer light-mode. We finally added an option that lets you choose :)

* oAuth! You can currently login using GitHub, Google, Twitter. Let us know if you think we should add support for some other login services :).

* Newsletter sent out every Sunday containing a recap of some of the best side projects of that week.

tl;dr We rebuilt SideProjects and we’re building community-friendly tools for it.
