RefactoringUI Book 8 years ago

The subjectivity of design has always baffled me. I looked at the example and immediately thought "wow, the one on the right looks so much better". I truly don't understand how the one on the left could be preferred.

It does seem like you're arguing against the "usability", which I think is a stretch. The hover state provides interactivity, the right has far less going on (minimal), the drop shadow does nothing either way and more compact does not mean more functional, I would argue the exact opposite actually.

Changing the label from "Address 2" to "Apartment, Suite, etc (optional)" and adding dynamic dropdowns for City, State, Country decreased the number of incorrect addresses for us by nearly 50%.

Although I can't claim credit I stole it from Shopify's checkout.

Are your children in speech therapy? If not, I highly recommend having them see a professional at least once a week.

One of the other things that really helped me when I was younger was being active in sports. When playing sports you don't have to talk, you just run around and play. It also helps to develop friendships, friends that won't care about any disfluency.

Another thing is practice, kids who stutter are extremely terrified of giving speeches in front of other kids (eg. oral presentations). Do your best to know if they having any speaking commitments coming up and help them prepare by practicing with them. If can make a huge difference. You can try to identify where they might trip up and help them work through it. I can tell you from experience that knowing exactly what you are going to say makes it less likely that you will stutter / block.

The last thing is to actually alter your speech around them, speak slowly and consistently while pausing naturally to show them that it is perfectly normal and even preferred to speaking quickly and getting mixed up.

I have had a blocking stutter (disfluency) since the 3rd grade. Went through several years of speech therapy and as I have gotten older it has improved to the point that most people can't tell. I still have daily issues with it but have learned to mask it pretty well (switching to a different word when I block, pausing naturally when not blocking, etc.)

I definitely think it has had an impact on my personal and professional life, to what degree I am not sure. I try to avoid giving group presentations or talking on conference calls when I don't have to.

It has never cost me a job or prevented me from being successful as a developer (CTO now) but it is constantly on my mind and makes trivial situations more complicated. I have learned over the years that a lot of it is in my head, and most people will never know, but it still affects how I conduct myself on a daily basis.

If you do suffer from blocking I recommend always trying to be prepared for any speaking situations you might be in. Do your best to stay relaxed (face, mouth, lips), speak slowly and consistently, taking normal breaks regularly so that any blocks don't seem out of place. The best therapy is really just practicing speaking blocking words aloud by yourself or with a partner/friend.

If you’ve never used Stripe or had to implement a payment system it may be hard to understand. Like others have said, Stripe made it simple to accept credit cards online and since have expanded to offer several different products that focus on helping internet companies (sass, ecommerce, marketplace payments).

What they did right was their developer first approach. They eliminated all of the bullshit you had to do to start accepting payments. They took something that more and more companies needed to do, was unusually complex, and made it easy. It certainly qualifies as “special” if you’ve ever had to do it.

This is actually a really hard problem to solve. At my company we have been working with several social data enrichment providers and even the "best" have a pretty high degree of error.

For what it's worth we just typed in a few "lesser-known" emails/twitter handles and it picked up relevant and accurate data.

I'm going to signup for an API key and fill out the contact form so we can talk to you guys. Is there any plan to support Instagram handles? Twitter seems to be the network of choice among services like these but I would argue Instagram data is much more valuable, especially when it comes to influencer marketing.

Senior Full Stack Engineer | Sacramento, CA | $80k-$110k | ONSITE | https://grin.co

Grin is looking for full stack engineers to help build the next generation of influencer marketing software.

We offer a competitive salary, equity and a great environment.

The ideal candidate is someone who wants to get in early and own large pieces of functionality across many services/platforms. They should love working with the newest versions of everything and be problem solvers who can plan, design, prototype and publish game changing features.

This is dead on, I'm well aware of Uber's issues and continue to use them almost daily. It's such a useful service for me at this point in my life that I can't think of much that would make we walk away.

I've never personally had a bad experience with Uber or Lyft, and unless that happens, I'll continue to use their services. The bottom line is I just don't care THAT much, i'm more concerned with my life.

The majority of overdose deaths occur after a period of abstinence (getting clean, running out, etc.) followed by using the same amount (or more in the case of withdrawal) of the drug before the cessation. It can take as little as 48 hours for your tolerance to drop by a meaningful margin.

My ex-girlfriend died in September of this year from a heroin overdose. She was in the process of getting clean and then relapsed.
