I’m using the iPad Magic Keyboard which is also a stand. So it’s pretty much the same as using a MacBook. I do have the 13 inch. I tried the 11 inch but personally I found that too small to use comfortably like this.

I mainly use my iPad Pro like a MacBook with the Magic Keyboard and a Razer mouse (I can even play ARC Raiders perfectly on it, streamed from the gaming pc in another room; having a completely silent gaming setup in the living room is amazing) connected.

My macOS muscle memory works most of the time, but there are also quite some details which are slightly different or missing. If they would allow a macOS “mode” on iPad I would choose it over a MacBook instantly for work.

Wouldn’t it be great if this finally breaks the Microsoft stranglehold. We could pop open the champagne and toast to liberté égalité and digital sovereignty ;)

My gosh yes please! This is so annoying. Last time I checked it’s impossible to disconnect your email address from Google auth if you used that to sign up. And no way to delete the account and recreate with that email address.

I'm subscribed to the Premium Family plan to get rid of the ads and for the music service, which I think at the current price is a great deal. I just wish they would add more options to the premium plan, like:

- add proper filters (e.g. for sponsored content, low effort content creators, any content about spending/winning money, other obvious nonsense which exists just to increase views, etc. etc.)

- detect and filter generated and other low effort crap content

- add proper parental controls (it's a family plan, after all and YouTube Kids does not count, it sucks)

- disable Shorts (if there's one thing that's going to make me cancel my subscription it's the cancer that is Shorts)

True, though when carefully implemented it’s the most reliable option I guess.

Or, if you’re building for clients with a traditional “enterprise” and “secure” IT infrastructure: add refresh buttons and call it a day. If there’s one thing in my experience that consistently fails in these environments and cannot be fixed due to endless red tape, it’s trying to make real-time work for these type of clients.

I fondly remember playing Doom with my brother. Our dad had made a serial cable for us. One of us was playing on the PC and the other one on a laptop with a grey scale display and terrible ghosting. We had so much fun and it felt like magic indeed :)

I remember making fun of Microsoft trying to combine mouse and touch in a single UI.

And yet here we are, Apple doing the same thing to macOS, resulting in the same shit desktop/mouse experience that macOS has become.

Agreed, the Chrome browser extension and the Safari inline menu are garbage. Fortunately the classic extension is still available and still works great for me, as well as Safari with the inline menu option disabled. Same for the iOS extension, garbage. But luckily the classic password autofill on iOS still does work great.

There are still many retail investors who think the saga is far from over, and are now betting on direct registration (DRS) of their GME shares with the goal of triggering another, much bigger short squeeze than last year.

I’m lucky enough to still have good eyesight so it’s not limiting for me personally. Most of the time when working I’ve got it hooked up to a big 4K display though. My expectation is I’ll appreciate the new XDR display for the times I’m not on an external monitor.

I’m upgrading from an M1 Air (16GB) to a 14” Pro base model just for the display. Extra M1 pro performance is bonus but the M1 has already been amazing for development work past year.

I quickly bought a space gray trackpad just after they discontinued them. Patiently waiting for them to release the space gray compact version of this new keyboard along with the new pro macs ;)

I was wondering about this too and so far haven’t found any reviews addressing this question. The only thing I found was this forum post[0] which implies the old and new magic keyboards feel the same (though the author thinks they feel like the butterfly keyboards, which I do not agree with having used all types of Apple keyboards except for this new one).

Agreed, though isn't this often just a problem at a strategic level? C-level doesn't understand digital transformation, so there is no strategy and no budget, or they think they can just buy it with platforms like Salesforce.

Having custom software built is only getting cheaper because our development tools are getting more and more powerful and managed cloud infrastructure is extremely compelling due to removing most of the ops from devops and being cheap at the same time, so costs could hardly be an argument anymore, right?

But yeah, there's always the risk of hiring a firm that has a quality problem, or uses terrible tools to build software in the first place (which is what I was referring to with the joke in my first comment in this thread).

I agree, it’s their business priorities which result in engineering that leads to bad software. What I’m saying is you can choose to not buy into one of those uber-programmable enterprise platforms and instead (let someone) build fast and user friendly specific software just for your needs. All of the customization and dynamic crap can go out of the window that way, which will allow engineers to make things fast and user friendly again.

Choose 3 and then watch the consultants build the custom software using a low/no code platform. Now you are still in the slow and poor user experience and no customization options and more expensive and worse support ;-)

I think it’s pretty sad that enterprise software is mostly stuck the way you describe. There are companies willing to invest in fast and user friendly custom software though; the company I work for is pretty successful at doing just that.

Exactly! Very happy with both; VSCode for... code :) and Sublime for everything else. As far as I’m concerned these two are not competitors.

It will probably end with a better balance than right now. I used to enjoy working from home a couple days a week as focus days with minimal interruptions, but doing this all week with a lot happening inside the house at the same time (schools and daycare closed, spouse also wfh every day, grandparents in the house taking care of the kids, 3 different package delivery services at the door etc.) is not that great and I can't wait to work from the office again.

I feel the same and it has led me to conclude that this is a situation where things have to get (a lot) worse before they can get better, and only through legislation. I've been thinking about how it seems like we're living in the 50s of smoking except this time it's privacy and social media. Perhaps we can learn something from the tobacco control playbook...

Very happy with my MacBook Air M1, working mostly on TypeScript Node.js and React projects.

The first couple of weeks I used the Rosetta Terminal as described in this and many other blog post, until I found out this was not necessary at all for Node.js as described over here: https://github.com/nvm-sh/nvm/issues/2350#issuecomment-73413....

The only blocking issue was Docker so I used VSCode remote until they released the M1 preview. So with that and the release of HomeBrew 3.0.0 last month and many macOS apps adding M1 support, everything is now running smoothly for me and I think it's a really great machine to use as a developer.

Also, the battery life truly is amazing, and boy am I glad I finally got rid of that touch bar and that ridiculous butterfly keyboard.

Thank you, this is really great advice. These kinds of dialogs are always a hassle and are often skipped for that reason.

This is a serious issue with the massive increase in video calls and screen sharing (and people being oblivious to or not caring about this). Not just chat but also email notifications with previews. This has become something I actively consider before communicating by text instead of calling someone. It would be great if teams, zoom etc could automatically and by default prevent any notifications from popping into a shared screen. And then there’s still the people who leave their mail and chat opened and just cmd-tab through them or leave them on screen while sharing... oh well :)
