My history teacher in high school had a simple challenge to get an A for the entire year, skipping all tests and quizzes, and free pass to sleep during class: "Give me a 100% unique idea"

Obviously everyone tried and everyone failed. There are no unique ideas, only innovations upon existing and past work of others.

So I find it odd anyone would downvote you for the truth!

A different approach to this would be to put more control of these things into the hands of end-users such that they provide the 'backend' into which you (the developer) load your application.

In many games, believe it or not, is a actually intended. Once certain mobs start dropping certain items, people start camping only those mobs and ignoring everything else causing a large bottle neck for the population (in the case of multiplayer only obviously).

Additionally, say you give a mob 0.01% chance to drop The Sword of a Thousand Truths. And of course everyone wants the The Sword of a Thousand Truths. So every day you go out and farm these kobolds until your fingers are numb rather than exploring the world.

Finally, by providing a clear path to getting what you want, you will likely max out sooner and stop playing until the next content patch, which in turn means less revenue for your game

It's not that I super dislike it, more than I always thought of apple as a leader instead of follower when it came to design and perhaps I didn't realize how much they lost talent wise.

The only thing I truly don't like is notepad lost its full on yellow 'notepad paper' look. The difference between notepad and pages was very obvious prior, now it is subtle

I enjoy cold showers from time to time. But as someone who just moved in to a new home and forgot to schedule gas turn on in advance leaving us without hot water, a true "ice cold" shower leaves you literally breathless.

I've never felt my body react in such a way.

Because that is a huge fuss to do what practically every other app can easily do by dragging the border, including other windows apps.

That is a bit of a reach to call it blue collar.

I have blue collar friends from high school who envy what programmers do and make and I do what I can to try and persuade/teach them to learn to code and make a better life for themselves.

Could you make the error log accessible? Some of the frameworks appear to just bleed errors left and right. Be interesting to see if they are real errors or just misconfiguration

Sorry, I should have clarified. A new VPS/image/machine. I would not simply create a "new site" on the box that got hacked as I too would assume evil is lurking outside of apache.

Douse it with gasoline and toast some marshmallows as I spin up a new instance imo :)

Rather than trying to undo the damage (will you ever be 100% sure you caught everything?) why not create a new site (edit: as in a new VM/box/image from scratch) and import your data fresh.

If I was hacked and files were placed on my server, including a 'web shell' I would be very afraid I don't catch everything and it just gets re-hacked.

Unless this is just a pure curiosity adventure in deobfuscation... then nevermind :)

Best of both worlds (and works with all hosts) only thing you lose is the 1 click reboot/shutdown

We use CloudFormation to do this, but I thought beanstalk had similar cloudwatch metrics to scale with.

We don't use chef/puppet/ansible/salt in production or any code deploy stuff. Basically use your provisioning tool of choice to setup an instance like you would a local vm, deploy your code, then package that all up as an AMI.

When the server spins up there is some minor config that gets set depending on the zone it is in and we are off to the races. Takes about 2 minutes to fully register with ELB and start serving traffic.

Each step you remove from a new instance to become 'ready' decreases your load time and lets you run at higher margins so you arent stuck with a Cloudwatch alert of 30% cpu -> scale up because it takes 20 minutes for chef to config the server, git to deploy code, run whatever compilation of assets/configs, then finally register with ELB

Downside of course is you are always making AMIs to do a new push.

If you follow semver, you could add a small step to handle a pull of your latest .PATCH version so you are only creating AMIs for MAJOR.MINOR. Or if you prefer only doing MAJOR ami creations

tldr: reduce # of steps a new instance has to take in order to start handling traffic = higher cloudwatch thresholds = more server utilization = cheaper bill and faster scaling!

Twitter a terrible RSS replacement.

With RSS I just got the news/blog posts I care about, nothing more. Following people on twitter I get some good links but mostly a lot of noise about personal life crap I really don't care. Normally I stop following someone if the valuable links to noise ratio gets too low.
