No, you do not refute the conjecture if you run up to this number and a machine does not stop. Finding a machine that runs for more than 47,176,870 steps is easy - there are plenty of machines that run forever. The trick is that it needs to stop.

this is neat, but the AP CS A ("AP Java") curriculum and test is extremely boring, and primarily tests for ability to write very basic Java programs using pencil & paper.

I think the college board threw out the actual computer science part (i.e. everything except java details) years ago.

Hi, some of us try to compete in AoC. For me that is part of the fun.

In several previous years I have rescheduled things so I can stay up until the problems are released in my time zone to see how high on the leaderboard I could get.

It is sad that the AoC leaderboard will now just be filled with GPT entries.

Now do the cost for SLS based on the total cost to date for NASA and all contractors since inception, including the costs for Apollo and the shuttle.

I think people’s policies on reclining are probably significant impacted by how uncomfortable they are if the person in front reclines, which AFAICT is much more significant for tall people than people of median height or below.

What I've loved about Sanderson is the plot turns are never Ex Machina. Every new development fits inside the rules of the world and deepens your understanding of what can be.

YMMV. I quite like Sanderson's books and magic systems, but IMO, the typical situation where key rules of the world are unknown to the reader and the characters until the end, when they are revealed in order to facilitate the ending, runs pretty close to Deus Ex Machina (in some cases literally). See conclusion of Mistborn 1 and 3.

more spoilerful commentary: Mistborn 3 - main characters all die. We learn that the main character suspected to be the hero of prophecy was not in fact the hero of prophecy, and the side character left standing is the real hero. Ok so far. Then we learn that the side character is not just a hero, but in fact is able to become a literal god and remake the world however they want, and this new god resolves all the problems just by wishing that they were resolved.

You refer to issues that are all within the past five years, not decades. The last significant problems before these were in 2000 & 2001, which were due to artificial shortages created by Enron, not physical infrastructure problems, had huge political implications, and which led to the development of the current resource adequacy program used in CA. (Which has generally worked pretty well but has been too slow in adapting to rapidly rising amount generation from solar).

But I misread your comment and thought you were talking about significant unmet electrical demand rather than deficiencies in the reliability & safety of the grid. (The late summer grid problems in the past 3 years are partially due to insufficient supply, but require only 1% or so additional supply in the critical hours of the day and CA is building to address that.)

In short, I don’t believe that chronic insufficient demand is a tenable political and economic position (even in CA…) and do not expect it to be tolerated and not fixed.

It does not appear that these outages are due to load, so I do not follow how they are relevant to a discussion of the supply required for EVs. Perhaps a separate discussion of how PG&E sucks? (And maybe SDPL and SCE too?)

The only solution to increased demand requirements is to build more generation. I do not know what you are referring to with “currently willing to do,” but whoever needs to be willing in order to build more generation will certainly become willing at some point.

In my experience, the “oh it fails randomly sometimes” bugs are often in some random dull legacy infrastructure component where there is zero attention or celebration for fixing them, and so engineers tend to tolerate losing a bit of time once a week due to them for years rather than someone spending half a day to fix it for everyone.

I don’t think Microsoft / Gates had a “billion dollar bet” that’s comparable to what Zuckerberg is doing with VR and the metaverse.

Meta sells ads on a social network and is using money from that business to subsidize the development of VR applications on the theory that someday meta might make lots of money from VR.

Microsoft sold software for personal computers, made a lot of money doing it, and used that money to fund the development of more software for personal computers. At no point in this early history was there a billion dollar bet.

I don’t get the sense that horizon workrooms targets any of that. It appears to have a goal of recreating normal conference rooms with virtual tables, whiteboards, TVs.

I can imagine that VR in general has some applications that are valuable, but this particular article is about the potential of replacing normal voice and video calls with avatars in a virtual conference room.
