Google is offering voluntary exit packages to certain employees within its business division, according to a new report by Business Insider. The move affects select teams in the company’s Global Business Organization (GBO) in the United States.

In an internal email sent on Tuesday, Google’s Chief Business Officer Philipp Schindler informed staff that some roles would be eligible for a voluntary exit program, also known as a buyout. The memo, viewed by Business Insider, said the company is starting the year “in a strong position” thanks to employees’ work in 2025. However, Schindler also noted that the environment remains fast-paced and highly competitive.

“The game is dynamic, the pace is electric, and the stakes are high,” he wrote in the message.

Schindler emphasized that everyone in the GBO needs to be fully committed to the company’s mission, especially as Google continues to focus heavily on artificial intelligence. He said employees must be “all in” and ready to embrace AI to create even greater impact.

The story of Rogue 2 years ago

Didn't the Unix version have some interesting encryption going on w/ the saved game file circa 1984 +/- 1y?

IIRC it folded in: - the players uid and - the files inode

To prevent the file from being usable by other players, and preventing the user from making a usable copy of it...

Confirmed!

You also have a view of Mono Lake if you sit there on the benches.

You would also pass there if you are going from the SF Bay Area to Mammoth or Bishop.

Data moats? Data not on the web, both for the first pass of training [1], and for fine tuning / RLHF [2].

Maybe compute would be a moat...can you run it in inference cheaper? Conditional computation, very quantized models. Probably training compute is not a moat however.

Not sure what SOTA is on callouts to oracles (e.g. calling out to Mathematica or some database) during inference, but maybe if you could use.

I would look at BloombergGPT for inspiration on a SOTA vertical GPT [3].

Probably speed to deployment & integration & sales would be a moat too, as once you have customers using your stuff your competitors will have more trouble selling to the same folks.

[1] In the recent interview on Lex, Sam Altman referred to "data from partnerships". [2] Probably very reviewed by human raters. [3] https://arxiv.org/abs/2303.17564

Well, a variation on this is what Nobel prize winner Bob Dylan says in Brownsville Girl, that shared suffering is important:

"Strange how people who suffer together have stronger connections than people who are most content.”
Maybe suffering here can be interpreted as shared challenges.

I thought the book made a good case for frontloading enjoyment in your life and not putting off such things until a distant future glorious retirement.

They also talked about income smoothing, which is essentially a justification for, under some situations, spending more money that you "should" earlier, because later, you'll be older & less able to enjoy it -- and hopefully later you'll be making more money too anyway.

I have wondered if robots can own assets for example if there's a robot that walks around picking up aluminum cans and then taking them to a recycling center and getting paid for them, can it deposit that money in a bank account and be said to be the owner of the assets.

Thank you.

The first time I did 'import tensorflow', the import line ran for a long time and then complained about flatbuffers being missing.

Then I ran several commands to install flatbuffers - all of which I could have sworn claimed it was already there, but then I tried the import again and it worked.

'import numpy' works too so the env feels complete enough.

My python binaries are coming from ~/miniforge3/bin

So all is well now, thx.

I have found the M1 air fine for web browsing but kind of hard to install software on.

Following the instructions: -----

  python -m pip install tensorflow-macos

  ...

ERROR: Failed building wheel for numpy

It is really called out:

"Scenario #2 (Highly Likely) Madoff Securities is the world's largest Ponzi scheme"

I guess my lament is with wish that ultimately it would never be rational to perform a short GM draw -- i.e. there would be some short-term incentive they lose out on, and they would have long term reputation damage e.g. who wants to support a GM known for short boring draws?

GMs resign at times, even when one might think there's a microscopic chance of the winning side making a mistake later.

In some universes there could be American football leagues, say, where teams might resign in the 3rd quarter when they are behind far enough, and want to avoid injuries - but I don't think the concept exists now, no football team has ever voluntarily resigned before the end of the game.
