This is amazing. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for your service dang
Interesting, so the 2 new belts (fields) are closer than the 2 stable existing belts (Van Allen Belts) that shield us from radiation.
These fields could affect the launch and operation of satellites. Or maybe they will help shield us further? Or affect our atmosphere in some way? To be studied...
We've kicked the can down the road for a while, but no worries, we will pick it up soon and recycle it ;)
awesome. thanks for sharing
does anyone else just get "OK" displayed when clicking thru?
its like the christian version of karma or dharma
thanks for creating a meaningful dialogue here, wish ars would try to do the same
Yeah he has a very unique, beautiful, and consistent visual language that really captures and conveys majesty. The emerald necklace around the charles is a top US treasure to be sure.
Love the exploration of Olmsted's idea of natural scenery "unbending" and untwisting the pent up anxiety inherent in urban life. To use landscape architecture to "sanitize" and heal the public.
NYC and Boston (and the US in general) are lucky to have had an architect of his caliber designing green spaces...we could use some more of those to catch up with Europe ;)
Also interesting idea here...correlates with talk is cheap...but wonder if there is a word or phrase that captures this idea from Bushnell, the Olmsted family pastor:
"The most important and constant influence that people exerted on each other, Bushnell believed, was not verbal, but rather a silent emanation of their real character that showed in their habitual conduct and made itself felt at a level below that of consciousness."
interesting perspective....agree nothing is permanent but competition keeps monopolies from forming and stagnation/rot from setting in...
i saw peccaries napping in corcovado - magical place. cerro cirripo is on my list for our next trip. their permit website needs work though cheers
love to see progressive ideas in costa rica on how to coexist with our natural brethren. such a beautiful country, hope to see a jaguar or puma there in the wild one day :)
super cool
"It's just one resistor (15 ohms) and one wire, soldered to DQ26. The wire acts like an antenna, picking up any nearby EM interference and dumping it straight onto the data bus."
really neat hack. using the lighter to create EM interference. better go light up next to my DDR bus and see what happens :)
Possibly the most Canadian thing I've ever read
Wow, really puts the amazing progress over the last decade into perspective. Thanks for sharing
It’s economics 101 - labor vs leisure time is a fundamental division of time, which is influenced by wages and is an input into a firm or economy’s production function. Even if you don’t assign your leisure time a monetary value, someone else (an economist) will.
Can you recommend some good movies from last/this year? Have been digging into old movies to get my fix recently thinking there wasn't anything good out.
The VCs are just following the money. We're at the tail end of the economic boom brought on by computers. Until we have another paradigm-shifting scientific discovery, computers will be used to more efficiently match up existing assets (AirBnB) while serving ads and content that decays our social bonds/infrastructure (Facebook).
If there was less money in the system a lot of these quasi-innovative companies would die, or not even get off the ground. But there is tons and it is leading to the misallocation of a great amount of time, energy, and intelligence - at the cost of future generation's standard of living.
A useful 5G network is much broader than what VZ currently has set up in the mmWave range (high-band, >6GHz, high-speed, low propagation)
Verizon's next 5G investment is to build out the mid-band portion of its 5G network, in the C-Band (mid-band, 3.7-3.98 GHz, good speed, good propagation)
VZ spent $54B on C-Band spectrum in March, then committed to spend an additional $10B over the next 3 years to deploy towers to use that spectrum, and that's above the $18B they had already planned on mid-band 5G CAPEX
VZ is taking on a lot of debt to build out the mid-band portion of its 5G network, and this sale will help them chip away at that huge mountain of debt
Hahahahaha that could totally be the premise of a modern Seinfeld/Silicon Valley episode. You’re pulling out your voltmeter, opening up the laptop, testing your hard drives and cables, desoldering and resoldering components, spending hours on forums, and finally Kramer walks in and pushes the brightness key by instinct to show you a YouTube video, fixing your problem immediately
Keep your eye on the Sackler/Purdue Pharma case [1].
Purdue steered over $13B directly to the Sackler family by aggressively marketing opiates, misinforming doctors and the public about their dangers, and giving medical software companies kickbacks to push more addictive long-release versions of their opiates to doctors.
One company, Allscripts, was able to pay $145M to resolve criminal and civil kickback allegations [2].
They directly killed over 400,000 people between 1999 and 2017 and indirectly killed many more/caused unimaginable human suffering.
The family is proposing to pay $3B over 7 years and an additional $1.5B by selling off another company they own.
This is the real opiate crisis jackpot and the high-scale, high-powered, industrialized version of the crimes that are happening on the dark web.
I'm sure there are more large companies and high powered individuals involved and agree that the 200 arrests/$6M is an infinitely tiny drop in the bucket, but it's way easier to prove and stick than the larger operations.

Damn what a good reply. You must’ve been burned/seen some shit in the past.
My parents bought a 1400 sqft, 1950s-built home in 1993 for $350k. It still has all old appliances such as a 1950s oven that looks like this [1], old gas heating vents, no central cooling, no pool. No additions. The fixtures and flooring aren't cheap, but they're not luxurious, and are over 60/70 years old at this point - only real maintenance they've done is re-shingling the roof and repaving the driveway every decade or so.
The house is now worth $2.1M (+500% gain). Obviously if they sold a new buyer would tear the whole thing down and build some huge modern home on the land (which is the actual valuable portion of the asset) as has been happening in their neighborhood.
You are placing way too much importance on the relatively small value of fixtures and "nice" amenities vs. the global glut of capital chasing appreciating assets (made much easier through online platforms) such as land in desirable areas.

yes, federal reserve monetary policy is much more focused on the supply side of money (m2,m3,m4) - making sure banks are well capitalized and can lend to one another smoothly in order to make loans and keep liquidity high - but this doesn't get directly translated into inflation because a lot of the "printed" liquidity isn't directly circulating in the economy (low velocity)
government fiscal policy has a much more direct effect on m0, m1 through stimulus and other direct lending and spending efforts, which have a high velocity and directly impact inflation
now...what happens if the assets on the feds balance sheet start to default?
this topic will probably get flagged, but if you're serious about learning about inflation
look up money supply - m0, m1, m2, m3, m4, velocity of money
figure out how federal reserve "printing money" (what does that even mean) affects the different buckets
look up difference between how reserve requirements affect money supply vs "helicopter money"
look up the federal reserve mandate to target 2% inflation while keeping unemployment as low as possible
figure out how the federal reserve balance sheet works (eg what happens if debt the federal reserve owns defaults)
and you'll be much closer to understanding our current economic situation than you were in high school ;)
bill gates saw this coming in 2015 [1] and proposed many solutions so we could better prepare including assembling a medical reserve corps, simulated "germ games", and investments in medical R&D along with increased investment in 3rd world health infrastructure to stop the infections before they spread
also many asian countries were better prepared due to their exposure to mers/sars [2]. so there was a precedent and influential people calling for change
but investing health infrastructure is not the Fed's job, that is congress/government's job - AKA the job of corporations through lobbyists who have no incentive to do any type of preparation, just perpetuate the consumption cycle
the fed is just responding to an economic crisis by trying to bail water out of a sinking boat, but they don't have the power to actually rebuild/fix that boat

it's not so our current president can get re-elected (Fed is largely independent of executive branch) but to prevent massive riots, social unrest, and ultimately a large amount of human suffering now at the cost of pushing it down the road
