I'm curious to see, but I don't think the algorithm for calculating the password from the identifier would be very sophisticated. Assuming they didn't want to add costs to prevent easy retrieval of any secret key from the device, a complex algorithm would be kind of a waste.

I think NASAs switch to Probabilistic Risk Assessment has everything to do with unhappiness with doing a study of the entire moon and expanding requirements that shouldn't cost any more development time.

Exactly what planning failure would occur wouldn't have been known, so how many other general capabilities would this lander have needed to maintain across different scenarios where they might interact with each other? How much less testing of the actual plan would they have made to stay on schedule and in budget?

This seems like a past performance as a measure of future returns error to me.

China has had a lot of success with free market and exports while having substantial central control and without being a liberal democracy. It's not really clear how systems will fail or succeed as technological balance rebalances or unbalances power between the estates.

I think long term leaders will continue to be parasitic burdens upon their societies but its quite possible that technology will help alleviate their typical consequences on productivity.

For example, virtually every corporation is at its heart a failure in democratic control and a centrally controlled institution with either a long term dictator or oligarchy. They had substantially more problems competing in earlier times when paperwork overhead was literal paper.

I think the whole reason articles like this are common is that one can easily calculate these numbers from visa statistics, i.e. number of people who didn't get a job within the grace period. Naturally these kinds of statistics can be a bit off, for example someone might transition to another type of visa instead of seeking work.

In an alternative world where laptops are selling like hot cakes I would say it's because AMD woke people up who hadn't seen enough improvements to justify a purchase since 2012, the wild economy that has people job hopping, and of course the massive power requirements as Meta pushes APIs from the wildly successful metaverse to Facebook feeds.

I would consider verifying a signature with gpg, openssl or openssh a far more important feature for code signing than adding (equivalences of) ~transport features like OLM's ratcheting or perfect forward secrecy.

If the only way to verify a package is to run code written by the same person who wrote the signing that's pretty bad.

If a passkey is something you know then you are using a failed implementation. A fido/authn device is supposed to be able to attest to never having let the private key out, even with a relaxation to passkeys it should at least be sending it to another device that can attest.

I'd ignore the question of the in-project mentor and suggest filtering projects based on their open source community style of governance and supporting foundation and look through their actual collaboration communications to make sure their style is right for a young entry level contributor.

From those she can look at what interests her and why first bugs list they have, etc.

If they are a properly in the open she doesn't really need their mentoring as opposed to mentor like interactions from you, or any other people who would have time to review and discuss with her the ticket progress, her changes, etc.

She could end up having more connection to the project and mentoring they provide but she may also find other projects that are more interesting to her and realize the project she started on isn't motivating. It is hard to bring a dependence on a mentor that is helping because of one project with you.

If you post something public it can be attested to by whoever that it once looked like X which is almost as irrefutable as it being self proving like a block chain. Scuttlebutt is trying to help you obscure your identity in posting and one could be sending encrypted content to particular other parties (maybe in its protocols but certainly just using it for the medium) where those parties could reveal irrefutably that content and that you made that content as that identity in that historical context.

Take instead the example of sending content encrypted with shared session keys over a live mesh network, where you send session keys to your specific friends to decrypt instead of revealing an identity to them.

Any "friend" could prove that they had some content at a specific time, but they could never prove that they didn't just make it themself since you gave them the symmetric key that let's either of you make shared content. This is a simple way to fail to achieve irrefutable though other properties as well..

If for example you are accused of a crime with no statute of limitations and a friend has since died, there should be a distinction between whether their hard drives prove something or their hard drives are hearsay without something else, like their testimony that they didn't tamper with contents in some long forgotten practical joke.

I'd generally consider that different because whatever people scrape could be randomly reassembled but its not forming a canonical proof. A social platform that digitally signed content to have irrefutable proof of what you scraped would be closer and that would probably be adding the anti pattern they criticize for little reason.

They don't really go into the terms of the allowance, but if use it or lose it encouraged some just to go to the movies and eat at a cafeteria a few times a week from now on, it would probably have a better effect for a lot less money than most of the attempts at social programs I have seen.

Whether it is used is probably also a helpful metric.
