I'm Cyrille Rossant, a neuroscience researcher and software engineer at the International Brain Laboratory and University College London.

I'm interested in mathematics, scientific computing, data visualization, computer graphics, GPU programming, web applications, AI. I wrote several books on Python for scientific computing.

After a sudden personal event, I decided to devote a large portion of my research activities to the shaken baby syndrome controversy: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37650402

I don't write code anymore, because AI writes better code than me. I could write code, but the next AI would find 10 ways to make it better and more consistent with the rest of the AI-generated codebase. So I just let it write all of it. However, I inspect it all carefully and I constantly asks it to reflect on the code quality, to refactor, to reorganize, to make the code as good as possible. The end result is code that is much better than anything I could have written myself.

And I should mention that I have 30+ years of programming experience.

I fully agree. I loathe slow software. I hate bloat. I love fast software. As a developer, I'm completely, even irrationally, obsessed with speed, performance optimization, and profiling. I wish more developers felt the same way.

That's one way to see it. Can't we also imagine that more and more people now rely on AI rather than humans to learn programming (or more accurately learn vibe-coding)?

Why TUIs are back 3 months ago

I think TUIs have started to become popular again a few years ago, before Claude Code was released?

I can totally relate. I often listen to instrumental music while I work. Lately I've listened to music with lyrics and I have a slightly harder time reading, writing and thinking. Not being a native English speaker and not understanding everything helps though.

I had the same realization lately. Shouldn't it be said more specifically that anything that consumes matter to turn it into energy (as all living things on Earth) must poop? If we make the distinction between mass and energy of course.

Ironically, I read this article from start to finish, something that rarely happens with blog posts, which I usually abandon halfway through.

More seriously, I agree that writing short books or articles is an important skill. Writing long is easy; conveying the same amount of information concisely is much harder. It is also a sign of respect for busy readers.

I constantly find myself asking LLMs to be shorter, more direct, and more to the point, without fluff. They seem to have a tendency to generate endless streams of words.

Have you ever felt like you needed to record a conversation you had with your partner?

Just curious what you meant by that?

As a math/CS PhD and research software engineer in an international neuroscience research lab, I develop a broad range of software for science and data analysis: AI / ML models, GPU graphics and computing, interactive data visualization, high-performance scientific computing, databases, GUIs, mobile/web applications and websites. I co-created the VisPy and Datoviz GPU scientific visualization libraries. I wrote 4 books on scientific Python.

Thank you for making me feel old. The first iPad came out when I was doing my PhD. When I was a kid, Tim Berners-Lee was inventing the web.
