according to GroupMe messages obtained by FoHo

I remember coming to the bay area and it wasn't long before someone that felt they had a cultural affinity with me invited me to a GroupMe group. Man that was years ago. Surprised to see people still use GroupMe, still seems to be for cliques exclusively.

Shibori 6 years ago

definitely raised an eyebrow, first thing I saw and I was like "wow this is gaining consensus on HN?"

but dyes, of course its a dyeing technique

could never get into the other thing personally, but its nice to see when my attractive friends have

the medium term plan is more capacity and equipment at hospitals

the short term plan alone will flatten the curve too much, if successful, and we simply dont have confirmations about whether we build immunity or the virus dies out, so without those features the short term plan being the long term plan or a recurring plan (even if we build immunity but we flattened too much, then clusters reemerge). But in conjunction with the medium term plan and most people not being reinfected its the best solution

long term plan either way is a vaccine, effective treatment

edit: can you engineers please tell me and the world what some of you disagree with about this information? this isn't the place to write a dissertation on every edge case necessary to explain whats going on, and the lack of that dissertation doesn't undermine the point or utility of what is written

Consequently, prices sometimes can be manipulated by the very well connected, who would be consistently selling and reselling the same works at increasing prices

Go ask your local fine art gallery about the prices, try to do literally any price discovery and get the avant-garde run-around and count the minutes until it gets defensive

"ah you know I'm just in finance and most of the markets I work with have other mechanisms for price discovery so I was just curious about how it works here, for this artist"

well you know you need to buy something you really appreciate for yourself and want to keep for decades and you need all that time for the price to appreciate

generic stuff, but none of this answers what the market depth is now and how is standing market depth determined and what were the prior prices, or why that piece over there keeps increasing in price by 15% but is still in your gallery - is this consignment from someone you just sold it to? how come they weren't influenced by the same thing you just told me

Anyway, you can't ask it exactly like this in a casual conversation because thats just asking for defensiveness, but don't expect a transparent market. you can try asking about the art world in any cordial way you can think of and get stonewalled. You know the answers deep down.

so of all those minorities you see pulled over on the curb, 90% of them were just being arbitrarily frisked and had nothing on them and were not arrested, but you wouldn't know the difference, some of the other 10% had drugs planted on them, and many of those weren't their first random stop

the other validation of all those arrests and prison population records, many of them simply took the plea deal or violated parole where anything from any minor infraction to exercising a freedom you already have such as staying out after a certain hour imprisons them for the original length of the sentence

the other validation is all the violent crime stats, which comes from communities demanding certain areas are policed, based on the images of 90% non-arrests already burned into their mind

all while all the minorities have been trying to say this is exactly what has been happening while the majority power remains in actual and intentional denial, now relying solely on an unquantifiable comfort that this is statistically rare, because it has to be, .... right?

This is an issue with that particular website's implementation

because the product manager thought my user session was engaging with the site for 2 seconds longer so it must be good.

I never said it was the browser or the API just acknowledging that it is a predictable gripe and not a feature, and yes enabled by the browser and APIs

oh, it would be weird for a hacker to do that kind of thing.

the vast majority of "hacks", the kinds with efficient markets, don't have those kinds of consequences, almost negligible consequences really.

nobody is trying to overload internet-connected generators or some infrastructure where there are consequences.

I just can't imagine what kinds of hacks you think are actually happening to fit your dynamic.

Agreed! Even mindmaps fail at this when an idea is dependent upon a thought or observation in another branch. You have to add a bunch of notes, experiment with different less intuitive structuring of the idea, or MAYBE buy the premium version of the software!

Can you elaborate on that?

Do you mean like the RDP marketplaces should slow down so people cant find a computer near the skimmed credit card they bought so that visa transactions go through?

Or something more like corporate hacking?

Or back to the RDP to install monero mining botnets?

I’m just trying to figure out which one you are referring to as “overtaxing”

The whole debate is about being too married to stocks and ignoring the wide wide universe of markets and asset classes.

To anyone else, recognize that the citizenry is not limited to being passively investing in stocks, yet many of them are when they shouldn't be.

People in all the other markets say "buy the dip" arbitrarily too, and many of those markets are often inversely correlated to the stock market. So just repeating what your favorite investment guru once said does not give you any more insight than the next person.

When you look at the incentives: less vulnerable people (because the vulnerable ones will be wiped out) will make it more economical for the trade deal with the US to go through, the part about healthcare.

So yeah they probably are making them cannon fodder, whether its intentional or not, the incentives would let higher ups look at the proposal and say "by golly that makes so much sense", whereas the rest of the world wouldn't consider this proposal as killing two birds with one stone and just reject the proposal.

Isn't that how all the Native Americans died? The immigrants and imperialists weren't sick and their resistance to cause a herd immunity to the natives because the diseases were still ON THEM and it spread to the natives! This does not protect the vulnerable ones????

This is something that has been attractive about the blockchain space. The more generalized you become the more you get paid.

Offer trusted escrow because multisig is too complicated? Win.

Compiled a slightly better mining software? Win.

Learned how to host and run an exchange? Win.

Learned how to launch an irrelevant, redudant new blockchain? Win.

and the list goes on and on and on

Absolutely nobody is going to say "hmmmm, it looks like you've been doing trusted escrow for years, we need someone that knows React JS and can hit the ground running"

(Only traders and holders lose money in the blockchain space bear markets. A lot of people earn, and earn quite a substantial amount regardless of exchange rates.)

The problem with marginalizing it to "libertarian" means that you imagine that it is a future ideal reality for libertarians that doesn't already exist, while you simultaneously don't even entertain the argument presented. Cognitively negligent.

If the auction didn't happen, then there would be a software problem to fix and a criticism of trusting MakerDao and "decentralized finance" smart contracts. If the auction did happen, and only 1 person showed up and bid as low as possible, there isn't a problem.

I was on the MakerDao video conference, and people suggested software tweaks such as a minimum, and people pointed out that it wouldn't make much of a difference for the person that got liquidated and if the market actually was moving faster (like it was at the time) an arbitrary - but software hardcoded - minimum would have disrupted the auction anyway.

The only thing that happened here is nobody showed up to the auction. Now you and thousands of other people know that there is an opportunity to be the only one at a auction, and non-existing UI prevents a crowd from being notified and showing up. And yet, if you want the opportunity to make millions, you'll figure it out, and so will other people, and you will start to outbid each other.

but your comments sound like "we have a proof of concept that this issue could be solved, therefore it is solved".

What? No. This is about more people showing up to a foreclosure auction because they heard about the guy that bid $0 by being the only person at the foreclosure auction, and flipped a property for $4mm.

And then you have an actual market.

The auction house itself doesn't need to be patched. The auction process doesn't need to be patched. If the auction house has sympathy for the people that got foreclosed on then they can do whatever they want to compensate them from their own pocket, they can automatically do that in case a reserve bid isn't met, but the fact that the auction occurred in a timely fashion is proper behavior.

I dont think it was an unforeseen use. People that execute these smart contract dark patterns knew for a long time and didnt steer public discussions that way.

The very foreseen problem was that people dont show up to governance decision in crypto. Yes you can use a blockchain for voting but nobody shows up.

The real problem is that there are no alert protocols built into wallets and client side defi apps.

Now people are discussing it.

The bigger gamble was whether liquidation and auction could occur fast enough to prevent emergency shutdown. They did, one person showed up to the auction and bid $0.

System worked.

Everyone with dollar signs now is going to research that and bid $1 until the order book is populated and it never happens again.

Software updates to overfit for this possibility would be worse.
