Just a suggestion: you could donate "time", which probably could be valued much more than $1k:

- Contributing back the changes you've made (if any)

- Improving official documentation

- Writing blog posts on how you used the project

- Taking some time to fix upstream open bugs

The fact this even reached Hacker News front page surprises me, maybe because the writer is "famous"? Pure sensationalist tittle with a very poor and marketing driven content.

I see how the issues could be a "no deal" for the post writer. However, I have the impression that software engineers forgot that we are exchanging labor for money and it is normal to put our heads down sometimes. Let's stop with the "drama" when every single of our requests are not attended.

I act quite in the opposite way. Too much thinking hurts the pleasure of living in the present. If I wash the dishes and not my spouse is because in the present makes more sense for me to wash it, that's all.
