Long-term they will likely make no changes because human desire, habits and behaviors are rarely unknown to us.

The parent comment mentioned feeling tired after consuming something with a lot of sugar, was that really a mystery prior to using CGM? I doubt it.

Sure it's interesting to correlate to your perceived wellness (or lack thereof) with a wearable spitting out data but after the novelty of this discovery wears off my guess is that people will simply stop caring to check what they already know to be the case.

I mean ADHD medication is essentially meth. At first it works, and then you need a little bit more to get the same effect.

I was diagnosed with ADHD at 19 years of age (quite a while ago) and it took me 9 months to realize the medication was a net-negative for me.

I encourage you to seek other forms of treatment that aren't medication-based. What works for me is a lot of exercise, good sleep, healthy diet and limiting "easy" dopaminergic activities like scrolling random content or watching random YouTube videos.

Good luck.

It's not a symmetric need though. Your need requires other people to be around you to have your ideal lifestyle. The WFH need doesn't require other people to do anything different (we all use slack/email/etc regardless of where we physically are). Your need is wronging others (requiring them to spend time commuting and being in a distracting office) and their need (you aren't affected) is not wronging others.

It's insane that so many people are okay pathetically dragging other people into a shitty situation just to make themselves happy.

A post about hard work and diligent learning about CS concepts followed by an offer from a top-tier tech company will always be greeted by a bunch of dinosaur software engineers who feel entitled to a job in this industry for life purely because they have some arbitrary number of working years.

If you're applying for an IC role, code or shut up. I don't care if you have solved wicked problems before, it's all talking and hand-waving. Can you take a hard problem, and apply CS concepts and good ole problem solving to produce working, succinct and well written code? That's what you're being hired to do, stop complaining.

I'm curious, why is it that people dislike affiliate-backed links if the link is relevant, useful, interesting and of equal quality to the normal link? Seems irrational.

I think part of the reason for this is that generally speaking, people who eat poorly know they're eating poorly and would rather have their cake and eat it too. They know soda is bad for them and that apples are good for them. That sitting all day long doesn't expend a lot of energy and running the back hills for a half hour does.

So when someone asks an ill person who eats poorly "How have you been eating?" they know they're about to receive a long story about how they've tried and failed, or that lately they've been "cheating" or that they've been super busy at work and kids and life is hard and they have no time for such things. What's the doctor supposed to say after this? Nothing. Because people are only going to change themselves when they truly want to and not when someone tells them they should.

So instead they look for more efficient routes at attempting care. Drugs are pretty good at this for a while. Got high blood pressure? Here's some beta blockers. You got an aching back? Here's some pain medication for that. They make more money this way, their patients can reliably take the 3 seconds to swallow a pill everyday, and everyone seems to be pretty happy until they have a heart attack or need a wheelchair. It's a good thing that those things come with old age so their poor health condition can be blamed on yet again something other than their continued poor diet and lack of exercise.

It's funny how simple being healthy is. Sleep, diet and exercise.

I have the exact same problem when taking Adderall/Vyavanse/etc my creativity and memory retention is horrendous. Creativity is such an important feature to your personality and taking it away makes you so robotic and boring that I'd rather have the AD/HD and my normal, fun self than a foggy head all the time.

Or is it "for each user, divide their $10 by the number of streams they played and pay that to the copyright holder of the streams played?" So the more streams you listen to the less artists get paid for that?

I think his solution works like this:

Lets say you listen to Beck for 50 times, Beyonce 50 times, and Drake 100 times. That gives you 200 total streams, which a respective stream distribution of 25%, 25% and 50%. We can assume you enjoyed Drake more since you listened to him more so he should get more money obviously. So Beck and Beyonce each get $7 * (0.25) = $1.75 and Drake gets $3.50 for the month.

The largest lesson is that who we are and what we do must always be considered in the context of the biology occurring inside us.

This is such a pointless ending sentiment. I realize the irony here too, my comment is pointless transitively but I don't care.

So in this one context you can sit on your high horse, how convenient. I'm sure you spend large amounts of money on other frivolous things that others could judge and crucify you for.

Not sure why I'm feeding you but there it is.

These guys did this all wrong. They could have kept this going indefinitely if they found a team of people who all agreed to go in and play these machines at random times, at random casinos and never together. Better yet, rotate the people so they never go to the same casino within 6 months of their last visit so they don't get flagged for winning a jackpot every month.

Just send someone in, play for a bit and then win a jackpot and leave. $1.8k to $10k jackpots so ~$6k/casino per session per person.

You could easily get everyone to an annual $50-100k/year salary with very little play and be under the radar forever.

You would have to use people you trust since it's naturally a greedy endeavor.

I'm sure there are holes in my system, but those would be filled with a group of 10 people analyzing and iterating on it every week quite easily.

This isn't always the case. Zappos had always hired people to prepare breakfast and dinner and then flipped and used a contractor for food prep and service when they moved to their new HQ in downtown Las Vegas. Zappos is definitely not tight on money and is very well run (from what I could tell).

Perhaps they're just an outlier though.

This product does not solve this problem, but instead tries to insert itself into the users' task flow at precisely the time when their goals are focused elsewhere (on opening the door).

I agree wholeheartedly.

This is a rude interruption and will likely annoy rather than encourage more sanitization. In the video (0:59), a woman sanitizes her hands then must immediately compromise them again to actually open the door.

The idea is that you open the door with one hand and dispense sanitizer into your other hand simultaneously and then sanitize the other hand after passing through.

eh, people who know who Walter* White is aren't offended by him, and those that don't just think its a late picture of the dad from Malcolm in the Middle.

Find a field that has been woman-dominated for the last 50 years. Now put a man in that field, who is rather successful (like yourself in technology), and you will get the exact same result in the contexts you describe. I'm sick of this paradox where men and women are equal and yet men (and only men) are capable of making this mistake. It's simple pattern matching, and when the pattern tells you one thing and it's actually the other you're now a giant sexist pig. Now if a guy ignores you for more than a few seconds at one of these events then I agree, the guy needs to wake up, it's 2014.

Also complaining about getting hit on? Really? A person finds you attractive and wants to talk to you. What a monster.

"But I hate that my physical appearance and gender connotes so many (invalid and ridiculous) assumptions."

What is ridiculous about an assumption that is 95% correct in today's world? Perhaps it will be a ridiculous assumption in 5 years, and definitely 10, but it's not far-fetched to run into guys at these events who don't interact with women ever in their day-to-day work lives.

If Google were to have a year long ban on RG stuff to leave a precedent, Would people start to view Google as a sub-par search engine because Bing returns "high quality" results like RG still?

It's also rather weird how a lot of people seem to view Google as this public service for the people by the people etc, it's not. They can do whatever the hell they want and if you don't like it, simply stop using their service to send a message.

As usual, the irony is at an all time high.

"While they took their seats, several people unfurled two giant banners reading “TECHIES: Your World Is Not Welcome Here” and “FUCK OFF GOOGLE.”

People holding banners that were laser printed with materials synthesized by complex machines. People with cell phones tucked away in their pockets. People who have used Google a million times.

SteamOS: It's here 13 years ago

Perhaps you should read the context of a thread before mindlessly posting.

His comment was in response to : > Uh, that's never happened to me, nor anyone I know. And Steam Quality Control is good enough that games that bug-ridden will very very rarely make it through.

So, uhh, yeah it's their responsibility to check a game because once it is available on Steam they're vouching for its quality in some manner.

So does this mean Google will possibly move out of the search and advertising business within 5-10-15 years due to low margins and what have you?

Perhaps you could have a nice looking "Our Food Sources" page that details the markets, farmers, etc? I might be the minority on this, but when I see food locally sourced I'm more likely to buy it than generic food brand X.

Locally sourced to me = fresher, healthier, and better for my local economy obviously

That natural discourse for cyber bulling is to block those who continuously berate you online. If that's not an option, seek out an authority at your school or consider abandoning whichever mediums they're targeting. Bullying sucks though, sometimes the only solution is to wait it out and suffer through as little as possible of it.

That being said, I think Louis CK's more important point is his latter one, that many people are becoming too dependent on their phones to fill the silence or quiet times in their day-to-day.

I respectfully disagree. If you ask your parents what they used to do when they had free time (silence, quiet time, whatever) they wouldn't tell you that they did some introspection. They'd say they went outside and climbed trees, they read a book or tried a puzzle, watched television and maybe even napped. The only reason children love to be on their phones more than those things previously mentioned, is because of how quickly stimulating a phone is. Complex and HD games, the sum of the worlds knowledge in a glowing rectangle, and instant communication with all of their friends.

The older crowd just doesn't think it's natural. I don't blame them because frankly it does look a bit disturbing when you see a crowd of people glaring straight down into their phone when life is occurring all around them.
