The problem with the 12c Platinum, is that it was a "ground-up" rewrite, and is actually slower than the early 80s 12c.

Your looking at it wrong.

A doctor's appointment schedule is crazy busy, with "LONG" appointments being under 20min per patient. Imagine a scenario where a doctor is able to spend time with the patient/their medical history etc.

I spend a lot of time going to doctors appointments these days, and a large number of the doctors that I see, now have an assistant/transcriptionist in the room to manage the EMR/charting app, because that enables them to focus on the patient.

A few years back, I was prescribed a anti cancer, prescription drug that costs $4k per box. (5mg per day, 28day day supply).

I went on Ali, and ordered 5lbs of the drug for $100 usd including shipping.

I have a really rare cancer, and it didn't get detected until I hit stage IV and it started shattering my bones. Thankfully I lived 2 miles from a cancer research hospital that actually has a specialist in this type of organ cancer.

My current treatment regime is based on a research paper. My insurance initially denied me treatment based on "an expert in the field" and stupidly listed the doctors name. I looked her up and she was a podiatrist...

For the most part, my treatment is dialed in and mostly working. But I had a solid three months of fighting with the insurance company to get all of the medications, and I do the monthly phone calls to three different specialty pharmacies to get all of the various things that keep me able to walk.

Its a crazy hard problem because one of my medications is a "failed" cancer drug. Tens of millions of dollars worth of R&D, several clinical trials, and it turns out it doesn't work on most common cancers. (And even on cancers it does work on, its usually used as a Hail Mary play, at EOL because it might give someone a few more weeks, maybe). It costs roughly 40k a month, and I might be stuck on it for the rest of my days.

They have had a very solid store business at one point selling electronic kits. (Pi's, Arduino, etc).

A few years ago the kits were even in every Barnes and Nobel ni the country at Christmas. (And sadly most of them were in the clearance bin in January...)

Disney is CRAZY competent at content distribution.

ESPN is a Disney company, Movies Anywhere (is/was) a Disney project, the Disney+ service they are talking about is actually public v2.0 (They rolled out something similar in Europe a few years back, called Disney Life).

Disney has a universal "login" system, that shares your profile/preferences everywhere from parks to cable, its got everything favorite sports teams/players and can serve up custom content and more.

There is a lot going on at the house of mouse. (Do a job search on the Disney website and set your region to tech hub outside of LA/Orlando...)

Its not game-changing. That said, its a great step forward.

The T-Cell treatments or CAR-T cell treatments is one of the most promising lines of research in cancer treatment. Fred Hutch is doing a lot of research on right now. Seattle Cancer Care (which is associated with Fred Hutch) has an entire floor devoted to CAR-T trials. https://www.seattletimes.com/pacific-nw-magazine/the-hutch-i...

The interesting bit is that this is a successful trial on a solid tumors. CAR-T has shown that its most effective on non-solid tumors or blood based cancers. A few months ago there was a Stanford press release on them doing a combination of injecting solid tumor CAR-T and alcohol, which caused a singular tumor to be attacked and removed.

One of the things that came up at a recent kidney cancer seminar I attended, is that they are seeing better immune response with a more diverse gut biome.

The University of Washington researchers weren't willing to give medical advice, but they were very pro- immune treatment patients taking probiotics. They are still a few years out from publishing.

Its not immoral.

Right now I'm in a cancer treatment study. (my particular study is a "shotgun" type of study. They have a drug that they know works on certain types of cancer, but they have a guess that it might work on my weird/rare type.)

The previous studies on this drug I'm on, were done on patients they had exhausted the conventional treatments, chemo, radiation etc. And they were put on this drug as a last chance after the conventional treatments had failed. I'm lucky in that I'm getting this drug as a first line treatment.

In this case, with these kids, it sounds like they were given the traditional chemo, and when that show results, they tried this. As a result, they don't know if the chemo caused the remission or it was the T-Cells, or the combination.

Also the cost of the server hardware/rack is a fraction of the cost of the electrical and cooling system that is around it.

If I setup my co-location facility to run all Mac Mini equivalents (cool and they sip electricity) and some random person ships say 10 bitcoin miners, with 100 un-cooled video cards, that is going to seriously mess with my electrical and cooling setup.

In the last two days, I've gotten coding exercises that are supposed to take a eight hours, and one that was based on an api that doesn't exist anymore, that would be a solid two days of engineering time if the apis worked.

In college, I had to take a 1-credit hour lab course on MS-Office so that I could take an accounting class I wanted.

The first lab featured a typing test app where you had to be able to type 40wpm or they made you drop the class. The app was a DOS app that a) made you type a certain bit of unchanging text every time for the test, and if you finished it type it again until you made a certain number of mistakes.

I wrote a borland basic TSR that pretended to be a keyboard, and typed in the corpus repeatedly.

The instructor apologized repeatedly for making me take the class, and looked utterly terrified of me for the rest of the semester after receiving my 300,000wpm test result.

I'd worry more about the general topics that your learning, rather than the technology that your using to learn it.

Are you in a Computer Science class or a bogus how to use technology X class.

Are you learning Discrete Math, Big O, how to write a compiler, assembly language (doesn't really matter what platform).

If your learning CS, then you will have the tools you need to tackle any job using whatever tools you have at hand.

The "huge" differences between JSON and XML, don't really matter, if you can write a parser...

Write a doubly linked list in C#. (I shit you not, I had a large consultancy interview me for an IOS position and this was the one interview question that they asked).

The first polar orbit was supposed to be Discovery, about six months after the challenger disaster.

One of the things that was to enable the polar orbit was a new set of solid rocket boosters, the 'Filament-wound' models that had a lighter weight outer case, and more propellent.

The book Riding Rockets was written by an astronaut who was in the middle of prep on that discovery mission when Challenger happened, and has a few details on the proposed polar orbit launch.
