I'm a cofounder at Lumina - we're a consumer hardware startup looking to build products like this.
We've done a lot of research on lighting in pursuit of building a better webcam (our main product). We found the lights on the market (i) aren't very bright, (ii) aren't smart in any way, and (iii) are way too expensive for the functionality you're getting.
Personally, I use a 100 watt LED corn bulb but it's not very pretty.
We're considering building a light as our next product. Imagine: a light that's super bright, adapts its color and intensity to the weather / time of day / other lights in your room. (If anyone has ideas here, please reach out!)
I'm the cofounder at Lumina - we're building a modern webcam designed to solve some of these problems.
There's really been a lack of innovation in the entire home office space, with the webcam being particularly bad. It sucks that a decade-old product (Logitech C920) is still the bestselling product today -- that would be like if Apple stopped releasing new phones after the iPhone 4S (launched 2012), and it remained the bestselling phone through now.
A few thoughts to add to the article:
- On why webcams aren't seeing innovation, I'd disagree that the market is too small. There's enough gross margin to produce a $B company just by selling webcams [0], especially if you can actually get customers excited about the product.
- A big reason there hasn't been innovation is that the space doesn't attract entrepreneurs (because hardware is viewed as hard) or investors (because hardware is viewed as hard).
- Size isn't everything. As the iPhone shows, you can get very good image quality from a tiny sensor and lens if you have the right tech supporting it. (At Lumina, most of our eng effort is on the software layer)
I would've loved to see Lumina in his comparison. We launched a few months ago and are seeing many reviewers prefer us over the Brio (Logitech's flaghip) [1]. Personally, I'd guess we're 60% of where we can be in terms of quality and think we can achieve a quality level between an iPhone and a DSLR, hopefully closer to the latter.

1. We print hundreds of thousands of shirts every month, so our cost of goods is much lower.
2. The base price includes free shipping to a single address. If you want to split the shipment to multiple addresses, each additional address costs $3. So if you want to ship each shirt to a different address, just add $3 to the per-shirt price.
You'd be looking for a ringspun cotton or a triblend t-shirt from a high-end brand like American Apparel or Canvas. It all depends on how much you want to pay.
American Apparel and Canvas are on the high end of the market. They each offer both ringspun and triblend styles. You're looking at $3 to $4 per shirt over the cost of a basic cotton tee.
If you want a "value" soft tee, you should consider the Gildan Softstyle or Hanes Nano T. You can get these for only $1 to $2 over the cost of a basic tee, and you'll still feel a noticeable difference.

In all seriousness, we really dislike the inefficiencies of this industry ourselves. We used to contract out our print work, but we opened up 3 facilities (California, Pennsylvania, and Indiana) to improve on the quality and efficiency issues in the industry.
This is an industry where everyone uses the same equipment, same consumables, and same method of decoration, and still charge high prices because everyone else does. We differentiate ourselves by having the technology and processes (from the manufacturing side to the ordering side) and scale to move orders in and out more efficiently than anyone else.
