Lockdowns were the wrong solution, imo. I think we've underestimated the spread pre-lockdown and the spread during lockdown (grocery stores etc.). We'll know once broad antibody tests are administered. But if the virus has already spread to 30, 40, heck 50 percent of the population, then what the heck are we doing in lockdown...

There is also the likelihood of this virus to have already infected a large % of the population. Antibody tests will confirm that.

Instead of this indirection, how about addressing the root problem? As per your description, engineers would be individual contributors.

For the sake of conversation, let's loosely define a manager as someone who is responsible for enabling teams to succeed and assessing performance of their directs. Could you pay that manager equal or less than their direct individual contributors? How would the market respond?

First, this is not strictly true; many senior ICs get paid more than managers, and the comparison between manager-track job levels and IC-track job levels varies at different companies.

Are those ICs getting paid more than their immediate manager?

I too am hands off with respect to managing. I am of the opinion that if you need to actively manage your directs, then you have not hired well. I am a point of escalation when there are incidents or when mediation is required; otherwise I trust individuals to make decisions and be accountable for them. They will mistakes and you should not protect them from it; they need those experiences to grow. For decisions that are irreversible (or really hard to undo), I encourage them to solicit input from me and peers outside the immediate team.

For individual career growth, I try to align interest with opportunities that arise. I give timely feedback, I recognize their successes with new challenges and increases in compensation.

As it concerns project planning, I help with ballpark estimates so as to inform resourcing decisions. I negotiate the scope of projects with product/business leaders.
